T.H.E. Cholesterol Connection
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROBERT REPORTS
Cholesterol is essential to our survival and may be our saving grace. It is absolutely
necessary for the proper functioning of our entire body. In fact, every cell in
our body is capable of manufacturing Cholesterol as needed. The fear of Cholesterol's
health dangers stems from the Lipid Hypothesis Theory popular in the mid 1950's.
In those days, saturated fats and cholesterol were regarded as being primary contributors
to cardiovascular and heart disease.(1) However, new research has found that inflammation
is the root cause of the artery damage. Cholesterol itself, reveals its "sunnier
side" and true benefits to our optimal health.(2)
The benefits of cholesterol in the human body are many and yet still quite controversial.
Scientists do now know that people with high cholesterol live longer lives than
people with low cholesterol levels.(3) In fact, in Russia, a disease state of blood
lipids is measured by low levels of cholesterol not high. Dr.Harlan Krumholz of
the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale University reported in 1994 that
older people with low cholesterol levels died twice as often from a heart attack
as did older people with high cholesterol.(4)
The function of Cholesterol appears to be more vitally important to our health than
previously thought. Cholesterol is found in every cell and is, in particular, an
essential component of cell membranes. It plays a vital role in facilitating what's
referred to as "cell signaling" which is the ability of our cells to communicate
with each other.(5) Cholesterol serves as the basic raw material from which our
body makes many major steroid hormones, like testosterone, estrogen, progesterone,
cortisone and aldosterone.(6) Most importantly, Cholesterol acts as a precursor
for the synthesis (production) of vitamin D, which has been shown to act as an
antioxidant by protecting us against free radical damage. In fact, without adequate
levels of Cholesterol in our skin, vitamin D cannot be absorbed from sunlight. Research
has also been shown that low vitamin D levels may lead to heart disease and organ
cancers.(7)
Clinical studies of the effects of dietary cholesterol on plasma lipids carried
out over the last thirty years clearly show that dietary cholesterol found in food
does have a relatively small effect on total plasma cholesterol. In fact, the dietary
cholesterol increase from eggs for example results in an increase in both LDL and
HDL cholesterol levels, with little change in the ratio. Furthermore, the results
of clinical trials, as well as epidemiological data, demonstrate that egg consumption
has little relationship to high cholesterol or coronary heart disease.(8) The research
is quite clear that there is no scientific justification for a population-wide limit
on dietary cholesterol. The restrictions only serve to divert attention away from
the real core nutritional issue of cardiovascular disease today. The over-consumption
of processed foods that contain refined sugars, trans fats, and artificial additives.(9)
In a major review article concerning heart disease and artery lining damage written
in Scientific American by Earl Benditt MD, University of Washington Professor, he
makes it clear that the LDL 'bad' cholesterol sticking to artery linings is a late
stage of the atherosclerotic process (hardening of plaque in the arteries). The
damage to artery linings had already been caused by multiple factors, we now know
to be inflammation, which could have been from smoking, alcohol, the use of rancid
fats and nutrient deficiencies.(10) Furthermore, Dr. Mary Enig, a PhD nutritional
researcher, says that cholesterol is actually used by our bodies to repair lesions
in the arteries.(11)
A natural method to healthy cholesterol levels may be a balanced diet. A high fiber
diet consisting of whole grains such as brown rice, beans, lentils and peas is highly
recommended. A diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, almonds and walnuts,
flax seeds, wild salmon, sardines in olive oil, omega-3 eggs, turmeric and ginger
are highly beneficial as well. Avoiding foods fried in processed vegetable oils,
trans-fats/partially hydrogenated oils, shortenings and most margarine. Alternative
healthy oils are extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oil. These oils
are highly stable and are not known to become rancid easily, unlike processed corn
oils. Also, moderate daily exercise, proper rest, and stress management
are all extremely important to optimal cardiovascular health.(12)
In a recent study conducted at three major hospitals in Texas and Hollins University
in Virginia, the adverse side effects of statin drug therapy were evaluated. The
study consisted of fifty consecutive new cardiology clinic patients who were on
statin drugs therapy. They were evaluated for possible adverse statin drug side
effects. Consequently, all patients discontinued statin drug therapy due to side
effects and began supplemental Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Their conclusion was that
statin-related side effects are far more common and serious than previously published
and are reversible with the combination of statin discontinuation and supplemental
CoQ10.(13)
Dr. Andrew Weil, world renowned Integrative Medical Doctor, suggests supplementing
CoQ10 daily if fatigue and lack of energy plagues your daily life. Also, he recommends
supplementation if you are on prescription cholesterol blockers. This is due to
the prescription meds (drugs) that are inhibiting the body's natural synthesis or
production of CoQ10, which is needed for formation of ATP, our bodies' energy currency.(14)
We recommend one of the most reliable sources of this life sustaining nutrient and
that is Jarrow Formulas. We recommend their Jarrow Formulas Co-Q10 200, specifically
designed to help promote cellular energy (ATP). Furthermore, Dr. Weil also recommends
fish oils that contain an abundance of essential fatty acids known as omega-3s.
He states..... "Daily fish oil is an effective preventive strategy against heart
disease, and has been shown to lower triglyceride (blood fat) levels, minimize
inflammation and clotting, and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol." (15) We recommend
Barleans' EPA/DHA Fish Oil due to their pristine source and ultra-purified pharmaceutical
grade quality that provide the naturally occurring levels of EPA and DHA, so vitally
needed for cardiovascular and brain health.
We recommend the consumption of garlic daily for optimal heart and cardiovascular
health. We also recommend Kyolic Healthy Heart Aged Garlic Formula because it contains
aged garlic extract and vitamin E, known to intercept free radicals and prevent
a chain reaction of lipid destruction that protects the fats in low density lipoproteins
(LDL's) from oxidation. In addition, Healthy Heart contains hawthorn berry which
seems to have the ability to increase the integrity of the blood vessel walls and
improve coronary blood flow with positive effects on oxygen utilization. Cayenne
pepper, or capsicum, has been shown to significantly lower both plasma cholesterol
and triglycerides. Capsaicin has also been shown to decrease platelet aggregation
(blood cells sticking) and to stimulate the circulatory system and improves structure
of capillaries and arteries.(16)
The truth be known that healthy Cholesterol levels are naturally maintained by optimal
liver function which may be obtained through optimal nutrition.(17) Again, "food
as medicine" reflects the power to promote optimal health.
