T.H.E. PROTEIN CHAMPION
OF CHAMPIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROBERT REPORTS
Protein is a vital part of a balanced diet and provides the "building blocks" of
a healthy body.(1) And yet, protein is perhaps the most undervalued food group.(2)
The word protein comes from the Greek word proteos which means "primary" or "taking
first place". Protein is our dietary champion in other words because of its fundamental
relationship with all living cells in the body. In fact, protein is second only
to water in our body's physical composition.(3) Protein is the primary component
in the regulation, growth and differentiation of all organs and bodily processes.
It's estimated that over 50 % of the dry weight of your body is protein. Proteins
are everywhere in the body - in muscle, bone, brain cells, blood cells, genetic
matter, skin, hair, and fingernails.(4) Unlike carbohydrates and fats, the body
does not generally store protein, making it essential to include in our diet each
and every day. As with all champions optimal nutrition is essential to maximum performance.
So it is with dietary protein. As is the case with all champions, Protein is the
winning dietary component for optimal body mass.
A balance of complex carbohydrates and proper protein intake are vital to maximum
performance and optimal health. Research has been shown that cutting back on highly
processed carbohydrates and refined sugars, while replacing them with additional
protein intake, improves levels of blood triglycerides and HDL good cholesterol.(5)
It may also make you feel fuller longer and stave off hunger pangs. Additional
protein is also effective for weight control for the same reason. Two studies published
in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine found weight loss was greatest when people
followed an Atkins-style diet.(6) It is recommended to consume whole food protein
in the purest forms. Some of the best choices for whole food protein are from wild,
organic, hormone/antibiotic free and free range sources. Also, grass-fed beef may
be healthier because grain-fed animals are known to get sick more frequently. It
is best to avoid all processed meats such as salami, many lunchmeats, bacon, hot
dogs and sausages. They are known to contain nitrites and nitrates which may be
linked to cancer.(7) (There is now growing availability for healthy good quality
lunch meats and sausages.)
An essential amino acid is one that is not manufactured by the body and must be
obtained from protein foods. When we are deficient in essential amino acids, the
body will be unable to make proteins and will have to break down protein from our
muscles to obtain the amino acids it needs.(9) Therefore, an amino acid deficiency
may not be apparent for some time. Some of the symptoms of a protein deficiency
may include flabby muscles, falling hair, splitting nails, low blood pressure, fatigue
and constipation. Some of the factors that can affect how well we utilize the protein
we eat are low levels of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), pancreatic enzyme deficiency
and possibly any medical condition that affects the stomach, pancreas or liver.
Proteins are first broken down in the stomach by hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and
proteases which open the protein structure in such a way that enzymes can gain
access to the amino acids. Certain over the counter and prescription medications
such as histamines and antacids can neutralize stomach acid and prevent protein
digestion. Furthermore, steroidal anti-inflammatories or pain medications can cause
muscle wasting.(10) In addition, a lack of protein can cause impaired function
of nutrients such as calcium, iron, copper, vitamin A and vitamin D since proteins
are responsible for binding and carrying them throughout the body.(11) A protein
deficiency can lead to many nutrient deficiencies which may lead to organ dysfunction
and cell mutations.(12)
The acidic nature of protein intake has been indicated as a risk factor in the development
of osteoporosis. However, meats also supply the mineral phosphorus, which counteracts
this acidity. Phosphorus is needed for the phosphate component of bone matter. Meats
are also excellent sources of vitamin B12, which is an essential part of bone marrow
and maintaining the integrity of the bones.(13) Furthermore, digesting protein
releases acids that the body usually neutralizes with calcium and other buffering
agents in the blood. High protein intake, such as the amounts recommended in the
Atkins diet, requires much more dietary calcium and calcium supplementation to
offset the increased demand. Following a high-protein diet for a few weeks probably
won't have much effect on bone density. Furthermore, strength training and the increased
consumption of bone supporting minerals may ensure healthy bone density if you desire
to increase your protein intake.(14)
There is relatively little evidence regarding the effect of protein intake on the
development of chronic diseases. However, one concern about a diet that is high
in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrate, is that it would be detrimental to
cardiovascular health. Recent research provides reassurance that eating a lot of
protein doesn't harm the heart.(15) In fact, it is possible that eating more protein,
especially vegetable protein, while cutting back on easily digested carbohydrates
and processed sugars may benefit the heart. A 20-year prospective study of 82,802
women found that those who ate low
carbohydrate diets that were high in vegetable sources of fat or protein had a 30
percent lower risk of heart disease, compared to women who ate high-carbohydrate,
low-fat diets.(16) This is one of many reasons we recommend balanced nutrition
of alkalizing vegetables, fresh fruit, and healthy proteins. One addition to a balanced
diet is additional vegetable protein, we highly recommend Pure Green Protein from
Vibrant Health which is a rich variety of proteins from pea, alfalfa, rice, and
spirulina.
Fish and poultry are some of the best choices for meat sources of protein. If you
are partial to red meat, such as beef, pork or lamb, steer yourself toward the hormone
free and grass fed. Soy and soy milk also provides many additional benefits besides
its relatively high protein content. Vegetarians and health enthusiasts have known
for years that foods rich in soy protein offer a good alternative to meat, poultry,
and other animal-based products. Also, the fermentation of soy improves the digestibility
of soy protein. This is why we recommend Soy Essence from Jarrow Formulas. Soy
Essence utilizes organic soy milk that is fermented or predigested using the best
of probiotic bacteria, enhancing digestibility and bioavailability.
One of the world's oldest foods is whey protein. Whey was found to be used as early
as 420 B.C. Hippocrates, known as the "Father of Medicine", recommended the health
benefits of whey protein. The very first protein source you were designed to eat
as a newborn is your mother's breast milk. In fact, mothers' milk is 70% whey.(17)
Whey protein contains all the essential amino acids, plus it boasts the highest
protein quality rating among all proteins. It is a complete protein, giving newborns
a healthy start in life. A 1987 Immunology journal reports that whey protein supports
optimal immune system response by replenishing glutathione (GSH) levels in the blood
through its critical precursor the amino acid, cysteine.(18) Glutathione (GSH)
acts as our body's "master" antioxidant and detoxifier. It is a tri-peptide made
up of the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. Our bodies produce
GSH when we have adequate amounts of these critical building blocks.(19) We prefer
Whey Factors fromNatural Factors, because it is free of growth hormones and non-denatured,
which maintains the natural integrity of the protein molecule. This provides for
optimal absorption and protein utilization.
Our protein requirements depend on many factors such as our age, the size of our
body, how active we are or how much exercise we get, and to a lesser extent, our
gender. Protein is especially vital during childhood, pregnancy and lactation.
We also require more protein during times of healing, during illness, after surgery,
injuries, burns or blood loss to assist in bringing back the body's strength through
regeneration of cells and tissues.(20) Protein is also an important energy source
when carbohydrates and fats are not available. The Recommended Dietary Allowance
(RDA) for protein for adults is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. One kilogram
is equal to 2.2 pounds.(21) (Example: If you are160 lbs, divide by 2.2 = 72.72
kilograms x 0.8 = 58.2 grams per day is your RDA).
Protein is our winning way to optimal health due to its body building and healing
capacity. As in life, we either use it or loose it. So it is with protein and muscle
mass!
