The Location:

The Syndicate Trust Tower was built in 1907 and joined with the Century Building in 1912. It housed the headquarters of department store Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney until 1967. It then contained various offices until the 1990s when it remained vacant for a decade. The adjacent Century Building was torn down in 2004. Loftworks and Sherman Associates took over the building and started its 81 million dollar renovation in 2006.  This 17 story, 480,000 square foot building houses 70 rental apartments and 102 condos. . The exterior is one of the most lavishly ornamental terra cotta buildings in St. Louis.

The fourth and fifth floors feature four galleries to be used for exhibits. There is also a large communal art studio space for the use of artists who live in the building.  Our hosts are the exhibit coordinators, artists Connie and Paul LaFlam who will have their loft residence open that evening.

The Wines:

South American wines are the "new kids on the block", as they have only recently arrived on the export market in the last few decades. There are several wine regions in South America, each with their own flavor and style of wine.

Argentina: Although Argentina is the 5th largest wine producer in the world and has been producing wine since the 16th century; most of the wines were made to be consumed in that country. Historically, the Malbec has been this country's predominant red grape, but recently this grape has been displaced by the Italian Bonarda.  The country's number one white varietal is Torrontes, which has a lemony citrus aroma. The red varietals, in general, are considered better than the white wines. New production standards and laws enacted since 1999 have further helped Argentine wines gain credibility and recognition around the world.

Chile: Almost half of all grapes planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, however the Casablanca Valley is known for its white wines. Chilean producers of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay are modernizing to help them capture a share of the international market.

Certain areas also produce a good Riesling.

Brazil:  Rio Grande do Sul represents 95% of the wine production in Brazil. Some somelliers consider the wine from the south of Brazil even better than French wines.

Uruguay: The source of some interesting wines just now being discovered by the general public. It boasts some 300 wineries, but most produce no exports.Tannat, a red grape, has become Uruguay's leading variety. But most Uruguayan wines are difficult to find in the U.S.

Each guest at this event  will bring a bottle of South American wine or an appetizer to share.
