Boy to launch Peep into upper atmosphere

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (UPI) -- An Arizona 9-year-old said his school science project involves using a weather balloon to send a marshmallow Peep into the upper atmosphere.

Tim Devereaux of Scottsdale said his science project for his fourth-grade class at Laguna Elementary School will examine whether low atmosphere pressure will make the marshmallow treat expand, KPHO-TV, Phoenix, reported Wednesday.

Devereaux said the weather balloon, which will burst at 90,000 feet -- about 17 miles above the ground -- and deploy a parachute to bring its cargo back to Earth, will also be carrying a Styrofoam cooler containing a GPS tracker, a GPS smartphone as backup, a foil coffee lid to act as a radar deflector and a camera to take pictures of the Peep every 5 seconds.

The fourth-grader said his project, which he hopes to launch April 16, is also raising money for charity by selling "seats" in the cooler to people who want their photographs to visit the upper atmosphere. He said $5 gets a spot inside the cooler while $25 gets a "VIP" position pasted to the bottom of the cooler. The proceeds will go to the Ryan House charity for ill children and their families, he said.

2 sea lions moved from Europe to Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UPI) -- Two Stellar sea lions were transported from Europe to Alaska and wildlife experts say they hope the move may lead to romance.

A 4-year-old female named Sitka and a 1-year-old male named Pilot arrived at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward after an 8,100-mile trip by jet and moving van, the Anchorage Daily News reported Sunday.

The came to Alaska from Dolfinarim, Europe's largest marine mammal park in the Dutch town of Harderwijk.

"No problems, none in the least. Two of the calmest sea lions I've ever transported," said Brett Long, the SeaLife director of husbandry.

After a 30-day quarantine, the new arrivals will join four other endangered Stellar sea lions at the facility, which is hoping to breed the animals.

"We would hope to have successful breeding this summer," said Lori Polasek, lead scientist for sea lion programs at the center. "Nobody in the United States has bred Steller sea lions in captivity since the mid '80s."

The SeaLife Center is one of three institutions in the United States, along with Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut and the Oregon Zoo in Portland, that have captive sea lions.

Royal wedding doughnut, cake to go on sale

CANTON, Mass. (UPI) -- U.S. company Dunkin' Donuts announced the creation of a royal wedding-themed doughnut, and sister brand Baskin-Robbins is introducing an ice-cream cake.

The Canton, Mass., Dunkin' Brands said the Royal Wedding Donut, which will go on sale one week before the April 29 wedding of Britain's Prince William and fiancee Kate Middleton, is a heart-shaped, jelly-filled pastry with vanilla icing and chocolate drizzle, WHDH-TV, Boston, reported Wednesday.

The company said Baskin-Robbins is introducing a commemorative Royal Wedding Ice Cream Cake with an English garden-inspired design featuring white and blue roses.

"The royal wedding has turned into a really significant event as it has for, I think, a lot of folks around the world," said Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef for Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins.

Police: Woman hid stolen cash under wig

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (UPI) -- Police in Florida said they discovered $1,620 hidden beneath a suspected thief's glued-on wig.

Hollywood police said Esther Armbrister, 20, of Miami, was detained outside the Westin Diplomat Hotel when a man staying at the hotel accused her of taking the cash from the pocket of his shorts, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday.

Officers said Armbrister denied the accusations and showed an officer she wasn't hiding anything in her pockets or bra. However, police said an officer removed the woman's glued-on wig and found she was hiding 15 $100 bills and six $20 bills.

Armbrister was arrested and later admitted taking the money, police said. She was charged with grand theft and resisting an officer without violence.

Swarm of bees commandeers mother's car

PLEASANTON, Calif. (UPI) -- A Northern California woman's car was taken over by a swarm of bees, a pest controller said.

Mark Sherrill of Clark Pest Control told the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times a woman in Pleasanton, who did not wish her name to be reported, called him a few weeks ago with the curious report.

She had been running errands and returned to find bees buzzing around her car. After they seemed to be gone, she picked up her sons from school.

Later the children noticed the insects, clustered into a corner.

The driver stopped at a flower shop and called Clark Pest Control but did not panic, she said.

Sherrill, who wanted to avoid killing the bees, called a beekeeper, who sucked them up unharmed with a vacuum pump.
