Consumer Corner: The shrinking new home

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A funny thing happened on the way out of the recession -- new homes started shrinking.

Where consumers were eying spacious abodes of 2,500 square feet in 2007, they're now looking at 2,380 square feet and the National Association of Home Builders in Washington predicts that will shrink further, probably to an average 2,150 square feet by 2013.

Bailout talks for Portugal hit a snag

GODOLLO, Hungary (UPI) -- Negotiations over international assistance for Portugal are bogged down over the size of the loan needed, official said.

Portugal, which requested international assistance this week, is seeking to keep the size of a loan as small as possible to get the country's finances stabilized through June, when a general election will choose a new government.

But Germany and the European Commission are looking for Portugal to commit to a long-term austerity ...

Best Buy limits iPad2 sales

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The runaway popularity of the iPad2 is forcing Best Buy to limit sales temporarily, the retailer says.

Best Buy acknowledged Friday its employees have been directed to hold on to inventories not yet sold or reserved, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"This is a customary practice for us when there are supply constraints," the company said. "Best Buy enjoys a great partnership with Apple, and we're delighted by customer response to the iPad2."

Japanese imports clean so far

OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) -- Federal officials in California said no Japanese imports have been found contaminated with radiation from an earthquake-damaged nuclear power plant.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, part of the Department of Homeland Security, said as of this week none of the shipments from Japan that have arrived since the March 11 earthquake were contaminated, The New York Times reported.
