Study: Love main source of regret in U.S.

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Love is the chief source of regret for Americans, followed by family relations, education and career, a survey found.

The findings come from a phone survey asking adults to describe one thing they regretted in detail, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

The study, to be published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, found the sexes to be divided on love and work regrets.

Women were found to have more regrets about romance than men, at 44 percent versus 19 percent, while men had more work-oriented regrets than women -- 34 percent compared to 27 percent.

Individuals who were not currently in a relationship were most likely to have romance regrets, the survey by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois found.

Individuals with low levels of education were likely to regret their lack of education while Americans with high levels of education had the most career-related regrets, they said.

ER visits due to ecstasy up 75 percent

ROCKVILLE, Md. (UPI) -- U.S. hospital emergency visits associated with the illicit drug ecstasy grew from 10,220 in 2004 to 17,865 in 2008, a 75 percent increase, officials say.

A study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, says most ecstasy-related visits involved patients ages 18-29, but 17.9 percent involved teens ages 12-17.

Pamela S. Hyde, administrator of SAMHSA, says ecstasy use can produce psychedelic and stimulant side effects such as anxiety attacks, tachycardia, hypertension and hyperthermia. The adverse reactions can increase when the drug is used in combination with other substances of abuse.

The study indicates 78 percent of the emergency department visits involving ecstasy use also involve the use of at least one or more other substances of abuse, Hyde says.

Forty percent of patients older than age 21 had used ecstasy with three or more other substances of abuse, the study says.

"The resurgence of ecstasy use is cause for alarm that demands immediate attention and action," Hyde says in a statement. "The aggressive prevention efforts being put into place by SAMHSA will help reduce use in states and communities, resulting in less costly emergency department visits related to drug use."

NYC's TB cases down 81 percent from 1980s

NEW YORK (UPI) -- New York City, which battled a tuberculosis epidemic more than 20 years ago, had an 81 percent drop in cases in 2010 from the late 1980s, health officials say.

Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City health commissioner, says the city recorded 711 cases of TB in 2010 -- a 6 percent decrease from 2009. However, while the number of TB cases overall has declined, the percentage of cases among foreign-born people has risen.

"The health department provides excellent, free TB clinical services for anyone who needs them," Farley says in a statement. "We never ask about immigration status. Comprehensive treatment for TB is not only beneficial for patients, but it also benefits the community at large."

Dr. Chrispin Kambili, the health department's assistant commissioner responsible for TB control, says the city has done an excellent job fighting TB in the U.S.-born population.

Last year, 82 percent of the city's TB cases occurred in foreign-born New Yorkers. The top five countries of origin among foreign-born persons with TB were China at 15 percent, Ecuador at 6 percent, the Dominican Republic at 6 percent, Mexico at 5 percent and Bangladesh at 4 percent, Kambili says.

TB, a bacterial infection that spreads from person to person through the air, is not spread by shaking hands, sharing food or having sex, and brief contact with someone who is sick on a train or bus is unlikely to cause infection because TB typically spreads through close, daily contact, Kambili says.

Report: 'BlackBerry Thumb' claims expected

LONDON (UPI) -- A repetitive strain injury dubbed "BlackBerry thumb," caused by overusing mobile phones to send e-mail and texts, could lead to lawsuits, a U.K. law firm says.

The condition is so common the firm says employers can expect a series of lawsuits from workers seeking compensation, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

"If no one knows about the risks involved, they won't sue, but more and more people are becoming aware of health hazards in the workplace," said Karen Jackson, of the firm Roberts Jackson in Cheshire.

"A lot of people displaying symptoms associated with repetitive strain injury do not realize they are work-related, but the number with symptoms is increasing," she said.

The firm said it is increasing its staff to cope with what it believes will be a sharp rise in ''BlackBerry thumb'' claims.
