MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 3, San Diego 2

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Solo homers from Juan Uribe and Matt Kemp Friday lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over San Diego.

Uribe broke a 1-1 tie with a shot to center in the fourth and Kemp added his homer in the seventh to hand the Padres their third straight setback.

Ted Lilly (2-2) gave up only a third-inning run on five hits with four strikeouts over six innings to get the win.

Jonathan Broxton survived a shaky ninth inning to pick up his sixth save. Broxton retired the first two batters in the ninth, then gave up a single to Will Venable.

Venable went to second on fielder's indifference and scored on Orlando Hudson's single. Hudson moved to third on Chase Headley's single to put the potential winning run on base.

Nick Hundley then hit the ball hard, but right at left fielder Tony Gwynn to end the game.

Clayton Richard (1-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3.

Cincinnati, San Francisco choose QBs

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Quarterbacks Andy Dalton of TCU and Colin Kaepernick of Nevada were among the significant selections Friday on the second day of the NFL draft.

Both Cincinnati and San Francisco laid the groundwork for their future with their quarterback choices and Tampa Bay ended the frustration of Clemson's Da'Quan Bowers by choosing the once highly touted defensive end with the 51st overall pick.

The second and third rounds of the draft took place Friday shortly after the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to let the NFL resume its lockout of players. League owners had asked for a temporary stay of a district court judge's order to lift the lockout.

The fact that the NFL was conducting its draft as usual was reason enough for one appeals court judge to write a dissenting opinion that said the league's request for an emergency stay should not have been granted because there was no emergency.

The Cincinnati Bengals have faced something of an emergency during the off-season because quarterback Carson Palmer has demanded a trade.

Against that background, the Bengals drafted Dalton -- who led TCU to an unbeaten season last year and a victory in the Rose Bowl over Wisconsin.

San Francisco then traded the 45th, 108th and 141st choices in this year's draft to Denver to move up and choose Kaepernick, who became the first quarterback in NCAA history to throw for 3,000 yards and run for 1,000 in three straight seasons.

Bowers was originally expected to be a high draft pick, but after knee surgery his stock fell. He was finally chosen by the Buccaneers more than midway through the second round.

Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams became the second running back taken in the draft when Arizona chose him with the 38th pick. Alabama's Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner, was the only running back selected in the first round. He went to New Orleans with the 26th pick.

The final four rounds of the draft will be conducted Saturday.

Jimenez, Rumford tied for Euro golf lead

ICHEON, South Korea (UPI) -- Miguel Angel Jimenez pulled into a tie for the lead with Brett Rumford during Saturday's play at the European Tour's Ballantine's Championship in South Korea.

However, rain storms in northwestern South Korea kept the field of 72 from completing their rounds Saturday. The leaders will have to play nine holes of the third rounds Sunday before beginning final round play.

Jimenez and Rumford are 10-under par, which is two strokes better than Rhys Davies with another seven players lurking at 7-under.

Jimenez, who started the third round three strokes back of Rumford, was at 3-under after nine holes Saturday. He opened the day with birdies at the first two holes and got to 10-under with a 15-foot birdie putt at No. 8.

Rumford, after six consecutive pars to begin his third round, had a bogey at the par-3, 238-yard seventh hole but moved back into a share of the lead with a birdie at 8.

Hamlin wins Nationwide race

RICHMOND, Va. (UPI) -- Denny Hamlin held off Paul Menard in a one-lap sprint Friday to win the Bubba Burger 250 Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway.

The race was extended for an extra lap after Ricky Stenhouse ran out of fuel and brought out a yellow flag on what should have been the final lap. Hamlin was in front of Menard when the yellow flag was displayed.

Hamlin led for 199 of the 251 laps to win the 11th race of his Nationwide series career.

Menard finished second, followed by Justin Allgaier, Elliott Sadler and Aric Almirola.

French soccer group accused of race quotas

PARIS (UPI) -- The governing body of French soccer has been accused of trying to limit the number of non-white players by setting quotas for teenage training camps.

Mediapart, a French investigative Web site, made the allegation Thursday, the BBC reported. It quoted anonymous sources within the French Football Federation who said blacks and North Africans were supposed to make up no more than 30 percent of the 12- and 13-year-olds admitted to the camps.

The Web site said Laurent Blanc, the national coach, had approved racial quotas, something he called a lie.

"There is no plan to introduce quotas," he said Friday.

Sports Minister Chantal Jouanno asked the federation to conduct an internal investigation.

"Discrimination has no place in sport, whether it's in the stands or in the training academies," she said.
