On This Day 1912: Titanic Sinks After Striking Iceberg

Dear Readers,

In the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, the majestic ocean liner Titanic sank after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic. More than 1,500 of the 2,200 people on board drowned.

There were many factors that contributed to the disaster; the ship's leadership overlooked iceberg warnings, the ship's lookout had lost its binoculars, there were too few lifeboats and the evacuation was disorganized.

The Titanic was hailed as unsinkable due to its state-of-the-art watertight compartments. But six of the 16 compartments were ruptured as the iceberg scraped across the liner's side. Had the ship struck the iceberg head-on, it may have been able to withstand the collision, as fewer compartments would have been ripped.

On April 15, 1989, 96 Liverpool soccer fans were killed and hundreds more were injured in a crush during a match at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England. The investigation into the Hillsborough disaster changed the way stadiums were built and crowds were managed in England, leading to a dramatic drop in hooliganism and crowd trouble.

April 15 is the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci. He'll forever be known for "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa," but there was more to the man than his art, as our profile explains.
