------------------------------------------------------- Is This The Last Stock You'll Ever Need? This one tiny stock could be the last one you'll ever need. You're about to see a story so shocking and hidden - it could rival the great wealth creations in history. Get all the details - right here - before midnight Monday, May 30. ------------------------------------------------------- Joel Bowman, checking in from Buenos Aires, Argentina... "Historically, great fortunes have always been created when times were bad," says our future and disruptive technology maven, Patrick Cox. "This is more true today than it's ever been because we've entered into a period of unparalleled scientific and technical progress. "Imagine," continues Patrick, by way of example, "a piece of rock the size of a golf ball giving a person a lifetime supply of electricity. A piece the size of an SUV could give a lifetime supply of energy to a town of about 50,000 people." The rock is called thorium. A pound of the stuff can produce as much electricity as 200 pounds of uranium. "Thorium has numerous innate advantages," commented Patrick in a recent interview with Baltimore's NPR station. "One is that it doesn't produce weaponizable byproducts, but it's also true that the nature of the metal is such that it produces safer reactors. It burns at a lower temperature, and there's also a great deal of it. As a matter of fact, there's more energy available easily in thorium than there is in uranium, petroleum and coal combined. There's just an enormous amount of this stuff." It is the "non-weaponizable" factor that kept thorium shelved in favor of the decidedly "weaponizable" uranium during the post-WWII standoff between the world's competing "superpowers." But, Patrick assures us, thorium's time has now come due. For one, existing nuclear plants can already use it, much as a car that uses leaded gasoline can use unleaded too. In fact, one company heavily involved in this industry is already consulting with the Gulf states, with the French, the Russians, and, reckons Patrick, will probably end up consulting with the Indians and the Chinese, as well. Add to that the fact that thorium is virtually "meltdown-proof" and we could be looking at a possible game changer for the nuclear industry as a whole. "It's just a vastly superior design, and there are many options," Patrick continues. "The thing to remember is that thorium requires an extra neutron to work. In order to create fuel, you have to add a neutron. If you stop adding the neutron, then the reaction stops. This is completely meltdown-proof." For the rest of this week's feature essay - or rather, interview - catch Patrick's comments here: Dr. Thorium or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying by Killing the Bomb And, don't forget to check out his latest presentation, in which he outlines thoroughly his case for nuclear's thorium-sponsored future. Just a heads up though...it goes offline Monday, May 30. Watch it here. ------------------------------------------------------- KO's Cancer in 36 Hours! | ALSO THIS WEEK in The Daily Reckoning... The Attack on the Washing Machine By Mark Thornton You can chart the course of human progress in terms of how clean our clothing is. In early times people used animal skins, had no change of clothing, and had no soap. By Adam Smith's day, soap had improved in quality, was produced industrially, and was becoming available to the common man. Silver...Still Precious By Jeff Berwick We buy gold and silver as a way to protect ourselves from the TEOMSAWKI (The End Of The Monetary System As We Know It) to come. We live in a literal financial house of cards. It is all paper. That house of cards has been in the process of collapsing since 2008. Astute market participants realize this and are buying bullion, one of the only financial assets with no counterparty risk, as a way to protect themselves from the coming storm. The Saudi Arabia of Coal By Chris Mayer Gaithersburg, Maryland Last year, something important happened in the coal markets. China actually imported coal for the first time. As recently as 2001, China exported 90 million tonnes. But in 2009, China imported around 86 million tonnes. That's a huge shift in less than a decade. Overall, that import total is just a drop in the bottle. China alone burned about half the world's total demand for coal last year, about $2.8 billion tonnes. Over the next five years, China may well need another billion tonnes of coal annually. An Unstoppable Trend - Three Ways to Play it By Chris Mayer Gaithersburg, Maryland A few months ago, I hopped on a train to NYC to check out Gabelli's 16th Annual Aircraft Supplier Conference. I find these conferences are a great way to learn a lot about the leading companies in an industry in a short amount of time. Among the 14 companies presenting were some industry heavyweights like Honeywell and Boeing. ------------------------------------------------------- Gold... First up, this from Reckoner J.J.... Greetings Joel, In Saturday's DR I read with sadness your rant [read our rant here] about the idiocy regarding the prophetic mutterings of Harold Camping. Perhaps you didn't mean to, but by implication you lumped all Christians into this sect that really is but a small percentage of professing Christians. This was disingenuous at least. There are many of us who are confident of Christ's imminent return and yet would never proclaim a date. It could be any time between now and thousands of years from now. Jesus himself stated that the day and hour are unknown to man. Harold Camping is a fool for proposing one and has proven once again that he's a false teacher. Perhaps you thought your diatribe was clever. However, your mocking of Christianity and making light of the biblical record reveal a callousness and prejudice that is more than disheartening and disappointing. The DR has great insights and shows some amazing thinking. Saturday's attempt failed miserably on both counts. Whether you believe or not, the truth of the claims of Christ have eternal ramifications. If you were neutral then you would have little affect on souls. But Saturday's column actually would have the affect of influencing people against Christ. Even as an unbeliever I hope you can see the possible ramifications. And this, from Reckoner M.K.... Hi Joel, Nice job on the tongue-in-cheek rendering of the apocalyptic frenzy. It's a relief to be able to laugh about it. The last time I heard doomsday predictions was no laughing matter. The rumor was spread by Aum Shinri Kyo, a Japanese religious cult, responsible for the 1995 Tokyo gas attacks, with thousands of hospitalizations and a dozen or more deaths. I was there, and it was frightening. I prefer the American way: spread a doomsday rumor and then market as many products around it as possible! And finally, this one, from Reckoner S.G.... Laugh it up, Friend! All the mocking you're engaged in you do at your own peril! For certain this recent prediction of the coming of the "rapture" on 5/21/11, is way out of line and off base by a bunch! In fact - Biblically speaking - NO ONE BUT GOD KNOWS WHEN THE RAPTURE WILL OCCUR, NOT EVEN HIS SON - JESUS! But, my cynical Friend, the Rapture WILL occur sometime in the future, and, my guess is that when it does occur - and you're not "carried" away by IT - you will wish you had been among the "believers" who were looking forward to it with great anticipation! Say hello to the Anti-Christ for me, won't you? --- And on that cheery note, we thank everyone who wrote in over the past week with thoughts and comments. And, just in case you're interested, Harold Camping has revised his apocalypse date for October 21 on account of some shoddy math. Stay tuned! And, as always, enjoy your weekend...
