Going to Prom in the Weinermobile

Posted: 01 May 2011 04:23 AM PDT

We brought you the stories of some extraordinary prom rides a few years ago, but this takes the cake… or maybe the hot dog! Ben Ross was seriously hurt in a motorcycle accident. A joke he made while in the hospital led his mother to petition the Oscar Mayer company to take Ben and his girlfriend Molly Muchow to their prom in the Weinermobile. The company came through, and Ben and Molly were driven in the 27-foot vehicle to the L.D. Bell High School prom last night at the Dallas Trade Center. Link -via Fark

Jell-o, is it a solid or a liquid? Watch it being dropped on a hard surface in slow motion and you’ll see it is both. And hypnotically entertaining, too. -via The Mary Sue

Nose Stylus for Hands-Free Smartphone Usage

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 02:54 PM PDT

Dominic Wilcox finds it difficult to use his smartphone while taking a bath, so he invented this simple but brilliant solution: the Finger-nose. He can strap this plaster attachment onto his head and navigate his phone without using his hands.

This one took place in 1923. You might recognize the happy couple – they were recently the subject of an Oscar-winning movie. Yup, that’s Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, AKA the Queen Mother, and Prince Albert, Duke of York (the future King George VI).

The Harley-Davidson Scooter

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 01:22 PM PDT

In the 1960s, Harley-Davidson was struggling. Honda, with its line of popular scooters, was not. So Harley-Davidson tried to break into this market starting in 1960. The “Topper”, powered by a 165cc two-stroke engine, was marketed as a recreational and utility vehicle, useful for fun excursions and package delivery. It even came with a sidecar option for people or cargo. The line never took off, though, and Harley-Davidson ended the experiment in 1965.

Grandma Selling Suicide Kit on the Web

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 01:13 PM PDT

After watching her husband die a slow, painful death from colon cancer, a 91-year-old grandma named "Charlotte" is selling suicide kit on the Internet:

Charlotte makes the kits -- which cost buyers $60 -- by taking large plastic bags and sewing soft elastic bands around the opening. There is a slot in the bag for a plastic tube carrying helium gas to be inserted. Helium -- when inhaled in its pure form -- is deadly. Kit users are responsible for securing their own helium gas.

"If heaven is so wonderful, you know you'd naturally want to go there, wouldn't you?" said Charlotte.

Charlotte's story came to light because of the recent death of 29-year-old Nick Klonoski.

The Oregon man ordered one of Charlotte's kits and took his life in December 2010. Since then, his family has spoken out against Charlotte's business and now an Oregon lawmaker has put forward a bill to make selling the kits a felony in the state.
Charlotte, however, said caring for people in great pain is what motivates her to do what she does.

Charlotte's business is legal in California, but people are questioning the ethics. What do you think? Compassionate grandma or shades of Dr. Kevorkian?

Rachel Blackman made this Optimus Prime model out of scrap metal for the Fremont Solstice Festival. Kind of dieselpunk, don’t you think?

Bureaucratics by Jan Banning

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 11:28 AM PDT

Dutch photographer Jan Banning traveled the world for his 2008 book Bureaucratics, a comparative study in bureaucrats from around the world.

Jan traveled to Bolivia, China, France, India, Liberia, Russia, Yemen and the United States to snap photographs of civil servants – from fiscal authorities to police, from governors to local clerks – seated behind his or her desk within their bureaux, the room from which they exercise their (substantial or very limited) power.

The result? A fascinating look at the lives of bureaucrats – yes, there are obviously differences in how they’re dressed and decor of the rooms, but isn’t it amazing that their love of red tape seems to be a universal trait?

For the Ultimate Solution to Bicycle Theft, Use an Old Bank Vault

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 11:24 AM PDT

The Spalding Building in Portland, Oregon, has perhaps the most formidable-looking bicycle storage facility in the world. It consists of repurposed bank vaults:

Tenants of the 12-story structure can lock their rides up in one of two vaults converted to bike storage in the ex-bank part of the building (and scrub down in the nearby showers after the commute).

Actually, they’re just for show. The steel doors can’t lock. That would probably be too dangerous for users.

X-Ray Origami

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 11:12 AM PDT

Japanese artist Takayuki Hori created a lovely series of origami animal figures with printed skeletons. When displayed under the right light, they look like folded x-ray images. Here’s how he does it:

each translucent sheet is first printed with either the images of fragments of an animal’s skeleton, or, on some pages, human-made discarded objects that are often ingested by the animals in the wild. using the ancient tradition of folded paper, hori assembles the pages into a three-dimensional model. once the paper is folded, the printed components are united as a whole, telling the visual story of the animal’s plight to survive in an increasingly polluted and hazardous ecosystem.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 06:00 AM PDT

April is almost over and May is coming at us at the speed of time. Soon, we’ll be busy with Mother’s Day, graduation, Memorial Day, and school vacation. Just remember, when you get really busy that it’s always a good idea to take a break and recharge with the fun and interesting stuff on Neatorama! Here’s what you need to catch up on from the past week.

Jill Harness has two feature article his week. Cool Non-Literary Uses for Books has recycling projects that are “bound” to impress.

And her post The 11 Coolest and Weirdest Tumblr Blogs should keep you quite busy.

We learned about The Great Moon Hoax (of 1835) from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave is a lesson in Horse Calculus.

Wales, the Almost Nation came to us from mental_floss magazine.

Alex received a promotional goodie box concerning the new movie Thor and decided to share the contents in a game called What’s Inside The Box. We had lots of winners, who were named in the followup post.

The What Is It? game was not all that easy this week. It took a while, but Edward K had the right answer. This is a pet ID holder. You can slip paper inside it and attach it to a dog's collar. The funniest answer came from Randall, who called it "A hummelfubertapfer. Scandenavian beer drinker would use this timy hammer to break of the ice that formed on their beer as they drank it. This led to the colloquial joke of 'Is that your wife's nose or a Hummelfubertapfer?' after which the the joke's subject would either fly into a rage or laugh uproarously, depending on their level of inebriation." Both win t-shirts from the NeatoShop!

And we have a contest that is still open as this post is published! The Frowning Royal Wedding Flower Girl: What Was She Thinking About? is a caption contest of sorts in which you can win a funny t-shirt from the NeatoShop!

Once you’ve read what we have to offer for this week, you can delve into the archives for our past exclusive articles at The Best of Neatorama, or check out other links around the web with the NeatoHub. And thanks for spending some of your time with us!

Princess Beatrice's Hat

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 05:49 AM PDT

Miss Cellania noted the odd hats that Princess Beatrice of York and other ladies wore to the British royal wedding. What isn’t widely known is that Beatrice actually modified her hat to make it a bit less ostentatious. There’s a whole Tumblr blog devoted just to the odd headgear that she’s worn in public.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve just blogged about the hat that a woman wore at a wedding, so I have to go surrender my man card now.
