Nokia Private Ends: MicroSkype

I have read a lot of analysis about the Microsoft Skype deal and a lot of it feels like Déjà vu all over again.

The first reference goes back to 1997 when Microsoft bought Hotmail for $400 Million. It seemed like a lot at the time, but now I feel analogous to Dr. Evil’s ransom demands. On the other hand, the overall impact has been too positive and Microsoft is the number one mail storage service in the world and still ahead of Yahoo and Google (News - Alert).


The second reference is when eBay bought Skype for 2.6 Billion dollars. At the time I remember a lot of people objecting to the price and going all over the place on why it was synergistic. What people don’t remember is the context of that purchase. EBay was watching Google launch Froogle and the general view was that communication driven auctions were going to be important. More importantly eBay was watching Yahoo stock plummet as they showed a lack of innovation...
