#29: Wounded Warrior Birthday Ball

On November 19, 2010, the Wounded Warrior Barracks in San Diego held a Marine Corps
Birthday Ball for 300 wounded, ill and injured Marines at the Westin Hotel. The
Marine Corps Birthday is a very important day for all Marines, and for many of them
it holds greater meaning because it may be their first or last ball.

At $199 for a Marine and guest to attend (including hotel accommodations), the Birthday
Ball is not inexpensive, so a month

before the ball, Marine Parents and Purple Heart Family Support (PHFS) organized
an online fundraiser so that we could sponsor the Marines' attendance.

Our goal was to raise $9,950 for 50 Marines and their guests to attend, and we ended
up raising a total of $10,460! The wounded warriors had a great time at the ball,
and so did the PHFS volunteers who were there spending the evening with the warriors.
PHFS West Coast manager Joyce said, "It was a great feeling having them all in one
place. I think all of us had sore arms at the end of the evening from hugging them
all!"
