#6: Imagine You're a Wounded Warrior
(Continued from above) Too soon you're forced back into your new reality: a sterile
hospital room where a nurse needs to check your vitals and serve you breakfast through
an IV. Your days are a different kind of hell from the ones you spent in the 120-degree
heat under enemy fire, watching your partner fall next to you.
You are in pain, and you are probably depressed. Your family may or may not be around
to visit you and keep you company, and you are often lonely. Sleep is a welcome
alternative. Your eyelids droop and you are just about to fall back into line with
your buddies when you hear a knock on your door.
A woman wearing a maroon apron and a big smile walks in. She introduces herself
as a volunteer with Marine Parents' Purple Heart Family Support program. You don't
realize it at the time, but this volunteer will soon become your friend, and eventually
your family.
She'll check in on you often throughout your recovery. She'll sit by your bed and
she'll talk or listen. She'll give you a hug when you most need it. She'll introduce
you to other PHFS volunteers with equally big hearts. When you can eat whole food
again they will bring you hot meals that knock cafeteria food out of the park. They'll
invite you to their PHFS dinners at the hospital, where you can eat, talk and laugh
with your fellow warriors. Most importantly, they'll constantly remind you how much
you are appreciated and remembered.
As you begin to recover physically you'll realize that your attitude and spirit
are recovering too. You'll look forward to visits from your PHFS family, and by
the end of your recovery you'll find that you love them as much as they have loved
you.
Our PHFS volunteers truly provide the best support possible to our wounded warriors.
