#28: Meet Wounded Warrior Josef Lopez

One of our wounded warriors, who has been out of recovery for a couple of years
now, experienced a very unique and traumatic injury just after deploying to Iraq
in 2006. He became very ill and then paralyzed, which doctors determined was a
result of a vaccine he received prior to deployment. Doctors were able to treat
him, but it took him four years to get where he is today.

Marine Parents supported him throughout his recovery, adding him to our OperationPAL
list so that he would receive letters of encouragement during his four years of
therapy. In 2007, Marine Parents sponsored his participation in the Marine Corps
Marathon. Though he couldn't run in the marathon, he used a hand cycle and finished
the race in impressive time. He has participated in each Marine Marathon since then.

We attended his wedding in July 2010, and it was an honor to be there. Our PHFS
volunteers say that working with individual Marines is the most rewarding part of
being a volunteer, and the wounded warriors are so appreciative of the attention
and the support. It's a win-win!
