30 Ways We've Helped Wounded Warriors

#27: Comfort Food for Warriors and Families

The ultimate mission of Purple Heart Family Support is to provide an outlet for
wounded Marines and their families to gather, enjoy each other's company and receive
support and resources to help them through the recovery process.
This mission is accomplished in many ways, but the dinners that PHFS organizes at
the Bethesda, MD and San Diego, CA military hospitals are its most frequent and
well-known outreach service.
PHFS volunteers serve dinner at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland twice a
month (the cafeteria is closed on the weekends at this hospital), and another group
of volunteers serves dinner at the Naval Medical Center San Diego (aka Balboa) two
to four times a month. These dinners are so important for the warriors and their
families because it brings them all together in a sense of community. The Marines
can regain that sense of camaraderie with their brothers, which helps speed their
recovery time, and the families can share with each other and receive support from
our volunteers.
The PHFS volunteers work very hard to bring comfort and happiness to our wounded
warriors, and we can't thank them enough for lifting our warriors' spirits week
after week.
