L-7 days for Last Space Shuttle launch: NASA discusses its present on L-2

Next week, NASA will hold a series of briefings for the media at the Kennedy news center before the last flight of the space shuttle program to highlight everything else it has in progress, along with its plans for the future. Expect to hear a lot about upcoming planetary missions, International Space Station operations, and commercial flight services to low earth orbit over the week.

On Wednesday, July 6 -- L-2 days until launch -- the day starts off bright and early at 8:15 a.m. with an update of NASA's aeronautical research. While rockets, satellites, and astronauts get most of the glory, NASA original mission was researching airplane flight. Today, the agency is working with universities and industry to build quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft and building more efficient air traffic control systems to reduce flight delays...
