A few highlights from today's matches?
Under-15 Girls
After suffering a heart-breaking loss in the 2010 national championship game, Sting 96 (N-TX) began its 2011 tournament against Region I champion PDA Slammers (NJ). Despite a physical and competitive game, the match ended in a 0-0 tie. The PDA Slammers' best chance to break the scoreless draw was called back as Madison Kenny was called offside as she ran onto a through ball from Alexandra Weyrauch. Both teams move into day 2 with a point each.
Region IV and Region III champs squared off as Slammers FC 95 (CA-S) faced Eclipse Select 95-96 (IL) Wednesday morning. Slammers FC grabbed the lead in the 12th minute on a Sammie Solaru goal as she finished a ball crossed into the box. That lead held for most of the game, but just three time, Eclipse Select equalized on a goal by Sydney McGinnis.
SAC United Premier (MD) started its quest for a national championship in impressive fashion with a 4-1 victory over fellow National league qualifier Match Fit Chelsea Beat (NJ). SAC United's Margaret Purce was at her best on the big stage as she netted all four goals for her team, including a first-half hat trick. Alexis Della Pietro scored the lone goal for Match Fit Chelsea in the 56th minute.
Under-16 Girls
The match between Mustang Blast (CA-N) and Sting 95 (N-TX) pitted the two most recent national champions in this age group. Mustang Blast was champions as U-14s and Sting is the defending national champions, having won the U-15 title last year. After nearly 40 minutes of scoreless play, Sting's Morgan Williams netted a goal to put her team into halftime up 1-0. Katleyn Mountjoy added to the lead with a goal just after halftime for Sting. Mustang Blast got one back in the 63rd minute by Stephanie Amack, but Madelyn Crabtree sealed the game for Sting on a 71st-minute strike for a 3-1 victory.
Two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game propelled Scorpions Elite (MA) to a 2-0 victory over Michigan Hawks 95 (MI). The Region I champs took the lead on an Andrea O'Brien strike in the 70th minute. Lauren Berman doubled the lead with a goal just three minutes later.
Two National League qualifiers faced off when Dallas Texans 95 Red (N-TX) and Hurricane 95 Shubert (OK) met Wednesday morning. Hurricane got an early lead when Elizabeth Keester knocked in a goal in the 13th minute. Katherine Sprouse doubled the lead with a 33rd minute strike. Sophie Groff brought the Dallas Texans within one as she converted a PK in the 41st minute. Anna Beffner scored the final goal for Hurricane in the 74th minute to lift her team to a 3-1 victory.
Under-15 Boys
The two U-15 National League division winners, FC Dallas Premier (N-TX) and Michigan Jaguars, finally got to battle it out on the opening day of the National Championships. Jaguars went ahead 2-0 in the first half through goals from Ken Krolicki in the 18th and Travis Hammers in the 26th. FC Dallas pulled on back to start the second half through a Grant Norris strike, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit as Jaguars claim League superiority and an opening day victory.
A 2-3-2 campaign in the National League hardened SDFC Gauchos (NJ) as they came away with the Region I Championship last month, but they couldn't get by opening day opponent Chicago Fire Juniors (IL), as Fire triumphed 4-2. Gauchos took the lead in just the 4th minute from Jose Meza, but Fire equalized and took the lead before halftime on two goals from Lloyd Chatfield. Luca Giovine extended the lead for the Fire just after halftime and Brian Werchek tacked on another before SDFC pulled one back on a Troy Carrington Jr. strike.
Matches between Cal-South and North Texas typically produce a grudge match and today's game between San Diego Surf (CA-S) and Solar Chelsea 96 (N-TX) was no different as they battled to a 1-0 score line in favor of Surf. After a scoreless, back and forth first half, Surf grabbed the game winner from Andrew Ogilvy in the 56th minute as the only tally of the match.
Under-16 Boys
Under-16 Albion White (CA-S) is making their second trip to the National Championships as US Youth Soccer National League champions. In 2010, Albion lost in overtime of the national final and has had their sights set on getting back to this stage ever since. Opening day opponent Concorde Fire Elite (GA) is no stranger to this competition either however, as they are also back for the second straight year after claiming the National League Red division. In what also amounts to the de facto National League championship, Albion grabbed three points in the standings with a 1-0 victory. Raul Martinez netted the winner for Albion in the 53rd minute to lead the quest back to the final.
Besides the two automatic qualifiers, three additional U-16 National League teams made the trip to Phoenix having won their respective Regional Championships. Minnesota Thunder (MN) and CESA 94 Premier (SC) drew 0-0 during the National League season, but Thunder came out on top of their matchup today 2-0. After a scoreless first half, Nathaniel Thao put Thunder ahead in the 47th and Matthew Gweh added the second in the 77th to seal the win.
Having missed out on an automatic spot in the National Championships with a loss on the final day of the National League season, Eastside FC 94 Red (WA) avenged that loss and took home the U-16 Region IV Championship to earn their trip to Phoenix. Facing off against Region I champion Beadling SC (PA-W), Eastside took home an opening day victory in the club's first trip to the National Championships. The game looked like it would end in a stalemate, but with two minutes to play James Molyneux-Elliot struck for Eastside to deliver the 1-0 win.
