PHOENIX, Ariz. (July 28, 2011) - The US Youth Soccer National Championships continued today with the second day of round robin play at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz. The round robin is divided into a morning and evening set of games to offset the summer sun. Many of the 60 national qualifiers found themselves in a must-win situation to remain in contention for a spot in this weekend's National Championship finals.
The championships feature pressure packed games that bring out the best in these young athletes and make for an ideal environment for both development and competition. The field of 60 teams earned their place in Phoenix through a series of competitions which sets the National Championships apart from other tournaments.
Teams earn three points for a win and one point for a tie. The two top teams at the conclusion of tomorrow's round robin play will meet over the weekend in the National Championship finals. Stories, photos and videos are available following games are available at http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=20&d=227&mid=698003&m=1251 http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=21&d=227&mid=698003&m=1251 ; in addition to live scoring.
Teams at the national championships have earned their place via success in the 2011 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series or US Youth Soccer National League. A few highlights from today's matches…
Under-14 Girls In a wide open field, both games in the U-14 Girls' bracket on day 2 ended in a 1-1 tie. Region I champion Match Fit Chelsea (NJ) and Region IV champ Arsenal (CA-S) each earned its first point of the tournament after a day 1 loss. Kayla Jennings gave Match Fit Chelsea a lead with a 12 th -minute goal. Just five minutes later, McKenzie Taylor leveled for Arsenal and that score held as the game ended 1-1.
The next field over, Sting 97 (N-TX) took an early lead over Eclipse Select (IL) on a goal by Mimi Asom in the 10 th minute. The two teams played evenly for the next 60 minutes, and in stoppage time the score line would reflect the even play, as Eclipse keeper Caroline Brockmeier's free kick bounced over her Sting counterpart's head and into the net, leveling the score at 1-1. Both teams move into day 3 in control of their destiny.
Under-15 Girls
In the U-15 Girls' bracket, PDA Slammers (NJ) and SAC United Premier (MD) met in a rematch of the Region I Championship final in which PDA was victorious 4-1. The game Thursday morning was much closer, with PDA's lone goal by Alexandra Weyrauch in the 58 th minute separating the two teams. PDA and SAC United now sit atop the U-15 Girls' bracket and control their own path to another potential meeting in the championship final.
Under-16 Girls
After an impressive win on day 1, National League qualifier Hurricane 95 Shubert faced an uphill battle as they feel behind 2-0 early to Scorpions Elite (MA) on a pair of goals by McKenzie Meehan. Hurricane got one goal back in the 31 st minute to enter halftime down 2-1. Four second-half goals by Hurricane, including a 2 nd and 3 rd for Elizabeth Keester, secured the 5-3 victory. Scorpions' lone second-half goal was netted by Meehan, also giving her a hat trick on the day.
Under-18 Girls
After finding itself on the losing end of a 1-nil decision on day 1, FC Milwaukee (WI) reversed its fortune on day 2 and notched a 1-0 win over Team Boca (FL). The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie for much of the game, until Cara Walls netted the game winner for FC Milwaukee in the 76 th minute.
Colorado Rush Nike (CO) won its second game in as many days to clinch in a spot in the national championship final with a 2-0 win over FC Stars of Massachusetts (MA). Kaitlyn Bassett scored first for Rush in the 15 th minute. Haley Stading secured the win for Rush on an 88 th -minute goal.
Under-14 Boys Under-14 Boys Fullerton Rangers 96 White (CA-S) have made it clear that a national championship is the only way to complete a season that includes Dallas Cup and Region IV titles, and they will play for the crown despite having one game remaining in group play. An even first half with Dallas Texans 97 Red Dallas (N-TX) exploded into a 4-0 win for the Rangers, starting with an Andres Lemus blast four minutes into the second period. Ricardo Ruiz grabbed two more within 10 minutes of each other and Dylan Smith capped off the four goal outburst in the 65 th .
Chicago Magic (IL) pulled away late in a tough match with Smithtown Arsenal (NY-E) to grab their seat in the final with a 4-1 win. Bishop Calum put Magic in the lead after just 11 minutes but Adrian Roman equalized for Arsenal six minutes later. Christopher Hettler put the Chicago side back in front in the 28 th before second half goals from Jorge Torrescano and Renato Albuquerque solidified a championship appearance for Magic.
Under-15 Boys It's a crowded scene in the Under-15 Boys with all six teams still in the hunt to advance to the final. Chicago Fire Juniors (IL) sit alone atop the group despite just four points on a win and a draw after a 0-0 result with FC Dallas Premier (N-TX). With four teams tied at three points, FC Dallas is at the bottom of the table but can still play their way into the final as goal differential between the six teams is no more than three heading into the final day of preliminary play.
Under-16 Boys With five of six teams in the Under-16 Boys having competed in the US Youth Soccer National League, there are plenty of familiar opponents and rematches this week. MN Thunder Academy avenged a loss from earlier in the year in the League, beating Eastside FC 94 Red (WA) 1-0. Getenet Worku scored the game winner in the 32 nd minute as Thunder now sit at the top of the table with Albion SC White (CA-S) as the only unbeaten teams.
Under-19 Boys Under-19 Boys Chicago Fire Juniors (IL) secured their place in the final with a game to play after a 3-2 victory over Dallas Texans 92 Dallas (N-TX). Joey Tennyson put Fire in the lead just 10 minutes in, while Jesse Ortiz and Wojtek Wojcick extended the lead to three in the second half. Texans made a run for it with goals by Blake Wise in the 72 nd and Michael Brody in the 89 th , but they would come up just short as the Texans will need a win and some help on the final day to advance to the final.
Baltimore Bays Chelsea (MD) hold more boys' championships than any other club, having won at least one in every year since 2006 http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=22&d=227&mid=698003&m=1251 , and the U-19 Bays put themselves in good position to play for a ninth after they defeated Sereno 92 White (AZ) 4-1 and move into second place in the group. Moses Makinde set the tone with a goal in just the 2 nd minute, and Peter Caringi and Milovan Kapor each scored in the last 10 minutes of the half for a 3-0 lead at the break. Carter Owen pulled one back for Sereno in the 77 th , but Travis Dennis struck in the 90 th to secure the win for Bays and eliminate Sereno with a game to play.
