A Mad Max Reenactment In the Desert

For the second year in a row,  a bunch of Mad Max fanatics went out to the Mojave to live out their post-apocalyptic fantasies during the tree day long Wasteland Week event. While I would never consider heading to the desert in the middle of the summer in order to have a good time, it’s still great to look at the pictures and enjoy the video.

Sea Lion Rejects Woman's Hugs

We’ve all seen sea lion shows where someone is asked to give the animal a hug, but few of us have ever seen the volunteer end up in the pool. The result is pretty funny, even though I can’t help but feel bad for the poor girl.

Woof vs. Meow

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 03:55 PM PDT

I fall under the group of “cat people,” though I admit that this isn’t exactly by choice. The fact that I have a cat but no dog indicates a little bit about my personality, according to a survey by hunch.com. For instance, I am more likely than dog people to skew liberal, live in a city, own an Android device, and be self-professedly fashion-challenged. (Two of these are correct; I’ll leave the guessing up to you.)

Your Beards Are Invalid

Neatorama has featured lots of very strange beards in the past, but this… this I’ve never seen. The audience at the 1991 Beard and Moustache Championship in Tacoma, WA, had a double-rainbow moment when competitor Dean Beacon revealed his entry for the Freestyle Beard portion of the contest. I think commenter moosewomb says it best: “You would never be sad with a beard like that. You would? wake up every day and think ‘Yes. My beard is incredible.’”

The "Err" Art Project: You're Doing It Wrong

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 02:20 PM PDT

Untitled (Comb), Mr. Kartick, Mr. Ram, Mr. Vikash; Star Creations Ltd, Kolkata, India

Jeremy Hutchison had an idea: get companies to make products that don’t work. “I asked them to make me one of their products, but to make it with an error,” Hutchison explains. “I specified that this error should render the object dysfunctional. And rather than my choosing the error, I wanted the factory worker who made it to choose what error to make. Whatever this worker chose to do, I would accept and pay for.”

Hutchison’s collection of these useless products, called Err, will be on display in London beginning July 8. Check out more information about the project (along with lots more pictures) on Creative Review. Link

Bizarre Things You Can Rent

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 02:04 PM PDT

I joke about renting a laundry-folding robot because seriously, who likes to fold laundry? As it turns out, I could probably find one to rent if I looked hard enough. I could also rent a tree, a goat, a wife(?!) or any of the 20 things listed in this handy infographic from The World’s Biggests. Link

Hot Bath Therapy for Loneliness

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 10:25 AM PDT

You’ve seen the cliche in romantic comedy (and to a lesser extent, drama) movies in which a brokenhearted woman takes a bath and cries or drinks or talks to her BFF on the phone, and as ridiculous as I always thought this was, science has uncovered an interesting benefit to soaking in the tub. Christie Nicholson at Scientific American reports:

Scientists analyzed the bathing habits of 51 people. And had them record how they felt before and after bathing. The researchers found that higher scores on a measure of chronic loneliness were associated with an increase in warmer baths or showers. In a separate study, to test the link between physical temperature and emotional state, scientists had subjects hold cold and hot packs and recorded levels of perceived loneliness. They confirmed the correlation between cold packs and high loneliness scores.

Then in another study the researchers had subjects recall a time when they were feeling excluded. This exercise made the subjects subsequently desire comforting social activities like hanging with friends. But this desire was reduced for those subjects who were asked to hold a warm pack.

The authors claim this association between warmth and security is innate, yet many are not aware of the link, at least when it comes to warm baths. In another study they found that subjects do not think of a frequent bather as a particularly lonely person. A little obsessive maybe, but not lonely.

The Jaipur Limb

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 08:13 AM PDT

(Photo from jaipurfoot.org)

The Jaipur Limb was invented in the 1960s by an orthopedic surgeon and an artisan who worked at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, India. They saw the desperate need of poor people who were suffering from loco-motor disabilities and devised this limb that would help them them live more independent and productive lives. The prosthetic resembles a real limb,  requires very little training to fabricate  and can be made for a total cost of $100 -$200US as opposed to tens of thousands of dollars.

A Jaipur leg is designed for the specific needs of its most frequent users.  The rural poor often go barefoot.  They walk over rocky and uneven terrain.   They may need to stand or walk through mud or standing water.  They may not own a chair, so they spend a lot of time sitting cross-legged on the floor.  And they likely use a squat toilet.   None of these activities are possible with the standard prostheses in use in wealthy countries.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 02 Jul 2011 07:33 AM PDT

In the USA, we are taking a holiday weekend in honor of the 235th anniversary of the founding of our nation on Monday. Expect a lot of loud noises. In between picnics, parades, and fireworks, you’ll want to spend some time catching up on the great things we’ve posted this week at Neatorama. Here are the exclusive articles you won’t find anywhere else.

Jill Harness wrote 2 True and 2 False Origins of Tongue Twisters And Nursery Rhymes.

Guest blogger Eddie Deezen told us about Cheerleading and Some Famous Cheerleaders.

From Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, we got the second part of the history of professional wrestling in The Legend of Gorgeous George.

Mental_floss magazine gave us 9 Essential Facts for the Crustacean Enthusiast.

A Tribute to the Edible Dormouse was the contribution this week from the Annals of Improbable Research.

Congratulations to the winners of last week’s Tokyo Flash Treasure Hunt!

In the What Is It? game, the object in question is a mailing machine for putting addresses on newspapers and magazines. Villaridge knew that, and won a t-shirt from the NeatoShop. Meanwhile, DocKami said, "it's a …. IT'S A TRAP !" which made me laugh, so he wins a t-shirt for the funniest answer. It does kind of resemble a trap, doesn't it?

I also want to remind you of the "one guess per comment" rule, because we had a lot of people with multiple guesses this week, and that's not really fair to everyone else. Of course, you are welcome to leave as many comments as you want.

When you’ve seen all this, you can find some wonderful weekend reading material at The Best of Neatorama. Use the slider at the top of the page to pull up features from different years.I’ve gone ahead and selected a few that are particularly appropriate for the holiday:

The British creative team called Concept Shed produced this odd but beautiful vending machine to performed automated weddings for Marvin’s Marvellous Mechanical Museum in Detroit. Enter your information on the keyboard, and it spits out a plastic ring, asks you to enter your vows, and prints out a certificate!
