Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:39 AM PDT Anna Hrachovec knits a lot, but always in little quantities as you can tell from the pictures of her projects above. At one point, she challenged herself to make one tiny knitted project per week and since that point, she’s stayed on the schedule for two years straight. Over at Craftzine, you can read a great interview with her where she reflects on the project and on her cute creations. It’s a pretty fun read if you have time. |

Rhett & Link's Presidential Car Wash Commercial Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:00 AM PDT If you guys have IFC, I highly recommend checking out one of their newest shows, Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings. Essentially, the show follows around these two video-makers who create hilarious local commercials that are pretty much all destined to become viral successes. The one above is my favorite so far. Have you guys checked it out? If so, do you like it? |

Kevin Keller's New Comic Book Spin-Off Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:12 PM PDT Last September, Archie Comics introduced a new student in Riverdale High: Kevin Keller, the series’ first openly gay character. Kevin’s inclusion in the comics after Issue 202 proved popular with readers–so popular, in fact, that Kevin Keller is now getting his own spin-off.

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:04 PM PDT Through the ages, the classiest cars always had fancy hood ornaments. They began as radiator caps and continued even after the caps retreated under the hood. They began to disappear in the 1960s, so now you only see them on fine classic cars -or as art objects by themselves. See a wide variety of all kinds of hood ornaments at Dark Roasted Blend, from familiar logos to one-of-a-kind artworks. The ornament shown here graces a 1931 Packard Eight. Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:51 PM PDT Before I left my day job, I had plenty of “I quit” fantasies. Mostly, they involved walking away from an explosion a la every major action star ever, but I can’t say at any point I imagined being a robot. But that’s what’s happening here and in a new series of videos by deviantART:
THere are also “Be a Panda” and “Be a Wizard” videos up, and t-shirts to boot. |

Woman Buys Non-Existent Art for $10,000 Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:24 PM PDT The Museum of Non-Visible Art is an organization that hosts and sells art that exists only in the imagination of the artist. Or, as the people behind the museum prefer to call it, “non-visible”. One piece recently sold for $10,000. Paste Magazine described it as:
Now that sounds perfect for that big blank wall in your office, right? In case you’re worried that you’re getting ripped off, the museum assures you that its works are completely real. In a sense:

Bald Eagle Lands on Grave at US Military Cemetery Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:43 PM PDT Frank Glick, an amateur photographer, captured this amazing image at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota. He thought that the family of the veteran buried at that gravestone might like to have a copy, and did some research on Sgt. Maurice Ruch. Ruch, a veteran of World War II, was a US Army marksman who served in the Aleutian Islands and earned a Bronze Star. Then he went home, became an engineer and got married. John Tevlin of the Star Tribute spoke with Ruch’s widow, Vivian, and best friend, Jack Kiefner:

Historically Accurate Bodice-Rippers Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:27 PM PDT The lovemaking scenes in romance novels set in the Victorian era often describe the rending of corsets and petticoats as the lovers rush to consummate their passion. Er, at least, that’s what I’ve been told by people who read such works. Anyway, many romance novel authors would like for their stories to be historically accurate, right down to the specific layers of clothing worn by ladies of that time period. For their benefit, Deeanne Gist recently presented a workshop to authors who wanted to get the details right:

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I was thrilled to see it featured on AV Club’s Pop Pilgrims, which checks out the memorable real-life locations of TV and film shoots. While Wes Anderson and his crew were scouting locations for the unfinished script, Wes spotted this amazing house in Harlem and rented it for six months for both exterior and interior shots. I want to live here, but until that happens (never), I’ll settle for the tour. |
Pie Face Game: "You'll Never Know When You'll Be Hit!" Posted: 19 Jul 2011 02:18 PM PDT Quick, someone tell Rupert Murdoch that getting hit in the face with a pie is fun. This 1960s game from Hasbro actually encouraged kids to give themselves whipped cream facials. A spinner determines how many cranks you give the handle, but how many cranks it will take to splat a pie in your face is a mystery. Super fun… right? |
Should You Rip a Bandage Off Slow or Fast? Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:32 PM PDT
All right, Neatoramanauts! Let's settle this question once and for all: should you rip a bandage off slow or fast? Did you say slow? Well, according to science, you're wrong:

Why buy a house when you can simply take it? And it's legal, too! Kenneth Robinson found a loophole in the law that enables him to claim abandoned property for a few mere bucks in filing fee:

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 11:21 AM PDT With the biggest opening weekend in history under its belt, the Harry Potter franchise has just about everything it needs; except baby doll versions of its main characters.. until now. One enterprising artist has made baby dolls the likes of which are either extremely cute or extremely freaky (Baby Voldemort pictured.)

Kids React to Captain America Trailer Posted: 19 Jul 2011 11:20 AM PDT Kids say the darnedest things, especially when you show them a movie trailer for one of the biggest films of the summer. Pippa Middleton Made of Crumpets Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:53 AM PDT Photo by Solent News and Photo Agency First we brought you Mona Lisa made of coffee, and now we bring you the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in crumpets. Artist Laura Hadland used 15,000 crumpets and 15 volunteers to help her recreate a couple of iconic images of Pippa Middleton in her maid of honor attire from the royal wedding in April. The color variation was achieved by using different spreads on the crumpets; assembling the images took about 24 hours. Link via Go Fug Yourself |

If Disney Princesses Wore Historically Accurate Clothing Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:18 AM PDT Illustrator Claire Hummel has taken a look at the Disney princesses with a historical eye, from Snow White’s 16th-century Germany setting to Belle’s late 18th century French environment. She found that the clothes they wore didn’t match up to the historical settings very well and decided to set things straight. Here’s what Claire had to say about her interpretation of Jasmine from Aladdin (above): "Let's be frank — Aladdin is hardly an exercise in historical accuracy… It took some effort to track down some midriff-baring outfits but BY GEORGE I DID, thank you Persian fashion plates. I now know what sirwal are called (besides Hammer pants), and that Persian women wore some pretty sweet little jackets that I wish I owned." You can read about the rest of her findings over at Flavorwire. Prints are available on Claire’s site – wouldn’t they be a lovely addition to the room of a princess-obsessed little girl? Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:04 AM PDT Cartoonist Winsor McCay {wiki} creates an early movie animation in this 1911 film, originally entitled Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist of the N.Y. Herald and His Moving Comics but often just called Little Nemo, after McCay’s comic strip. Most of the video is a dramatization of how the animation came about. The actual animation happens about eight minutes in. McCay later went on to produce Gertie the Dinosaur, which many of us learned was the “first” animated movie. -via Buzzfeed |
