Two Years of Tiny Knitting

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 12:39 AM PDT

Anna Hrachovec knits a lot, but always in little quantities as you can tell from the pictures of her projects above. At one point, she challenged herself to make one tiny knitted project per week and since that point, she’s stayed on the schedule for two years straight. Over at Craftzine, you can read a great interview with her where she reflects on the project and on her cute creations. It’s a pretty fun read if you have time.

Kevin Keller's New Comic Book Spin-Off

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:12 PM PDT

Last September, Archie Comics introduced a new student in Riverdale High: Kevin Keller, the series’ first openly gay character. Kevin’s inclusion in the comics after Issue 202 proved popular with readers–so popular, in fact, that Kevin Keller is now getting his own spin-off.

The series, titled Kevin Keller, will follow a four-issue mini-series starring Kevin that began in July and has started filling out his background, including his relationship with his father, who serves in the military and is supportive of his son's desire to follow in his footsteps. Like those for the other Archie characters, Kevin's series will deal with his life in high school. "He's going to be the class president," said Dan Parent, the writer-artist who created Kevin. But it won't all be a good time. "Even the most popular kids are not popular with everybody," Mr. Parent said. "There's some adversity he'll have to deal with."

Readers will also get a glimpse into Kevin's adulthood thanks to a continuing married life story line in Life With Archie, which shows that famous redhead's life on two paths: one in which he married Betty, the other in which he married Veronica. In early 2012 that story line will feature Kevin's marriage. "We needed to figure out how to get Kevin into that book and, frankly, not sidestep the issue," Mr. Goldwater said. "It deals with the fact that he's a gay man and has gay relationships." Mr. Goldwater said the overall reception to Kevin has been positive. "Out of all the people who subscribe to the Archie books, we only had seven total cancellations," he said.

Awesome Car Hood Ornaments

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 08:04 PM PDT

Through the ages, the classiest cars always had fancy hood ornaments. They began as radiator caps and continued even after the caps retreated under the hood. They began to disappear in the 1960s, so now you only see them on fine classic cars -or as art objects by themselves. See a wide variety of all kinds of hood ornaments at Dark Roasted Blend, from familiar logos to one-of-a-kind artworks. The ornament shown here graces a 1931 Packard Eight. Link

Quit Work, Be a Robot

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:51 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Before I left my day job, I had plenty of “I quit” fantasies. Mostly, they involved walking away from an explosion a la every major action star ever, but I can’t say at any point I imagined being a robot. But that’s what’s happening here and in a new series of videos by deviantART:

Have you ever wanted to quit work because your boss is a jerk or because you wanted to dedicate your time to something you're truly passionate about? That's the inspiration behind our newest project.
DeviantART has teamed up with a stellar production crew, some very talented actors, and some awesome deviants to create a series of short videos that we all wish could happen IRL. Watch above as our overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated employees quit work and show their bosses who they really are!

THere are also “Be a Panda” and “Be a Wizard” videos up, and t-shirts to boot.

Crazy Penalty Kick

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:49 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Last Sunday, the UAE defeated Lebanon 6-2. Awana Diab scored a goal with a creative penalty kick that was struck with his heel:

Diab’s setup seemed like any other for a penalty, but as he ran up to the ball, he stopped, turned around and backheeled the it toward the goal. Stunned by the audacity, madness and nerve it takes to try and score a penalty with your back to the goal, the keeper just stood and watched as the ball trickled into the net.

The UAE’s coach immediately yanked Diab from the game, asserting that he had acted disrespectfully to the opposing team. Link -via Ace of Spades HQ

Woman Buys Non-Existent Art for $10,000

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 06:24 PM PDT

The Museum of Non-Visible Art is an organization that hosts and sells art that exists only in the imagination of the artist. Or, as the people behind the museum prefer to call it, “non-visible”. One piece recently sold for $10,000. Paste Magazine described it as:

A unique piece, only this one is for sale. The air you are purchasing is like buying an endless tank of oxygen. No matter where you are, you always have the ability to take a breath of the most delicious, clean-smelling air that the earth can produce. Every breath you take gives you endless peace and health. This artwork is something to carry with you if you own it. Because wherever you are, you can imagine yourself getting the most beautiful taste of air that is from the mountain tops or fields or from the ocean side; it is an endless supply.

Now that sounds perfect for that big blank wall in your office, right? In case you’re worried that you’re getting ripped off, the museum assures you that its works are completely real. In a sense:

Although the artworks themselves are not visible, the descriptions open our eyes to a parallel world built of images and words. This world is not visible, but it is real, perhaps more real than the world of matter, and it is also for sale.

Bald Eagle Lands on Grave at US Military Cemetery

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:43 PM PDT

Frank Glick, an amateur photographer, captured this amazing image at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota. He thought that the family of the veteran buried at that gravestone might like to have a copy, and did some research on Sgt. Maurice Ruch.

Ruch, a veteran of World War II, was a US Army marksman who served in the Aleutian Islands and earned a Bronze Star. Then he went home, became an engineer and got married. John Tevlin of the Star Tribute spoke with Ruch’s widow, Vivian, and best friend, Jack Kiefner:

I told Vivian that some cultures believe the eagle is a symbol, not only of patriotism and dignity, but a messenger between heaven and earth. She nodded solemnly.

“I’d say the eagle had a very good eye when he landed on Maurie, and he was respected,” she said.

“I miss him,” said Vivian as she picked up the photo. “He was a good man and a good provider.”

“The eagle couldn’t have picked a better person,” said Kiefner.

Historically Accurate Bodice-Rippers

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:27 PM PDT

The lovemaking scenes in romance novels set in the Victorian era often describe the rending of corsets and petticoats as the lovers rush to consummate their passion. Er, at least, that’s what I’ve been told by people who read such works. Anyway, many romance novel authors would like for their stories to be historically accurate, right down to the specific layers of clothing worn by ladies of that time period. For their benefit, Deeanne Gist recently presented a workshop to authors who wanted to get the details right:

It took an hour for Ms. Gist to squeeze into a dozen layers that a lady would have worn in the 1860s—stockings, garters, bloomers, chemise, corset, crinoline or hoop skirt, petticoats, a shirtwaist or blouse, skirt, vest and bolero jacket. By the end, workshop attendees were skeptical that seductions ever occurred, with so many sartorial barriers.

“How did they ever have hanky panky?” asked novelist Annie Solomon.

With great effort, it turns out. Women wore blouses under their corsets—making actual bodice ripping fairly pointless. Corsets fastened in front and laced up the back and couldn’t be undone in a single passionate gesture. “You’ll see pictures of corsets on bare skin. That’s completely historically inaccurate,” Ms. Gist told her audience.

Parmesan Cheese Pencils

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:03 PM PDT

The German ad agency Kolle Rebbe designed chunks of Parmesan cheese shaped like pencils. Flakes are shaved off with a manual pencil sharpener:

The cheeses are shaped like oversized pencils, where the "leads" contain three different flavors: truffles, pesto and chilli. With the sharpener included, the required amount of cheese can be sprinkled on the dish. A scale on the pencils and on the back of the packaging doesn't just simply list how much of the Cheese Pencil is needed for each dish, but even how many calories the portion contains.

New York: The Royal Tenenbaums house

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I was thrilled to see it featured on AV Club’s Pop Pilgrims, which checks out the memorable real-life locations of TV and film shoots. While Wes Anderson and his crew were scouting locations for the unfinished script, Wes spotted this amazing house in Harlem and rented it for six months for both exterior and interior shots. I want to live here, but until that happens (never), I’ll settle for the tour.

Pie Face Game: "You'll Never Know When You'll Be Hit!"

Quick, someone tell Rupert Murdoch that getting hit in the face with a pie is fun. This 1960s game from Hasbro actually encouraged kids to give themselves whipped cream facials. A spinner determines how many cranks you give the handle, but how many cranks it will take to splat a pie in your face is a mystery. Super fun… right?

Should You Rip a Bandage Off Slow or Fast?

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:32 PM PDT

All right, Neatoramanauts! Let's settle this question once and for all: should you rip a bandage off slow or fast?

Did you say slow? Well, according to science, you're wrong:

The perennial debate in every playground has finally been solved - ripping a Band-Aid off quickly causes less pain than pulling it away from the skin in a slow two-second tug.
For the study, published today in the Medical Journal of Australia, each student had two plasters applied to their upper arm, hand and ankle. The plasters were then removed using both fast and slow methods, with a randomisation process used to decide which was used first on each student. Subjects were asked to rate the pain on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the "worst pain imaginable".

Fast removal achieved an average pain score of 0.92, while slow removal was significantly more painful at 1.58

Get Your Own McMansion For $16

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 12:32 PM PDT

Why buy a house when you can simply take it? And it's legal, too! Kenneth Robinson found a loophole in the law that enables him to claim abandoned property for a few mere bucks in filing fee:

The home was in foreclosure, and the owner abandoned the property. That's when Robinson swooped in and, after submitting a $16 filing fee at the local courthouse, claimed the law of "adverse possession" gave him the right to occupy the home.

Adverse possession is a common law concept developed in the 1800s. According to Lucas A. Ferrara, a partner in Newman Ferrara, a New York City real estate law firm, adverse possession was enacted to ensure that property wasn't abandoned and was "maintained and monitored." It requires the posting of a clear, public notice that someone is at the property -- hence the court filing -- and that someone would remain there for a specific period of time, usually 10 years.

After the time requirement is satisfied, the Robinsons of the world have the opportunity to claim clear title to the property. In the meantime, the original property owner could fight the action, but it would be costly. And since the house has already been abandoned it's not likely the original owner would wage an expensive legal battle to get it back. The mortgage holder would have to fight a court action too.

In the meanwhile, he's living rent free! Understandably, his neighbors are upset: Link (with auto-starting video)

Thieves in Vienna, Austria made off with 21 tons of mustard and ketchup.

The loot was in a semitrailer parked in a lot over the weekend northwest of Vienna. Police say the truck driver showed up Monday to deliver his cargo only to see the trailer missing.

Police assume the thieves were more interested in the trailer than its contents.

Authorities are on the lookout for the missing mustard as well as the $22,000 trailer. Link -via J-Walk Blog

Pippa Middleton Made of Crumpets

First we brought you Mona Lisa made of coffee, and now we bring you the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, in crumpets. Artist Laura Hadland used 15,000 crumpets and 15 volunteers to help her recreate a couple of iconic images of Pippa Middleton in her maid of honor attire from the royal wedding in April. The color variation was achieved by using different spreads on the crumpets; assembling the images took about 24 hours.

Kermode Bear

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:49 AM PDT

The Kermode bear, also called a spirit bear, is a walking contradiction. One in ten black bears on Prince Royal Island, British Columbia are born white. National Geographic tell us more about spirit bears.

Neither albino nor polar bear, the spirit bear (also known as the Kermode bear) is a white variant of the North American black bear, and it’s found almost exclusively here in the Great Bear Rainforest. At 25,000 square miles—one and a half times as big as Switzerland—the region runs 250 miles down Canada’s western coast and encompasses a vast network of mist-shrouded fjords, densely forested islands, and glacier-capped mountains. Grizzlies, black bears, wolves, wolverines, humpback whales, and orcas thrive along a coast that has been home to First Nations like the Gitga’at for hundreds of generations. It’s a spooky, wild, mysterious place: There are wolves here that fish. Deer that swim. Western red cedar trees that have stood a thousand years or more. And a black bear that is white.

If Disney Princesses Wore Historically Accurate Clothing

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 09:18 AM PDT

Illustrator Claire Hummel has taken a look at the Disney princesses with a historical eye, from Snow White’s 16th-century Germany setting to Belle’s late 18th century French environment. She found that the clothes they wore didn’t match up to the historical settings very well and decided to set things straight. Here’s what Claire had to say about her interpretation of Jasmine from Aladdin (above):

"Let's be frank — Aladdin is hardly an exercise in historical accuracy… It took some effort to track down some midriff-baring outfits but BY GEORGE I DID, thank you Persian fashion plates. I now know what sirwal are called (besides Hammer pants), and that Persian women wore some pretty sweet little jackets that I wish I owned."

You can read about the rest of her findings over at Flavorwire. Prints are available on Claire’s site – wouldn’t they be a lovely addition to the room of a princess-obsessed little girl?

Animation 100 Years Ago

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 07:04 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Cartoonist Winsor McCay {wiki} creates an early movie animation in this 1911 film, originally entitled Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist of the N.Y. Herald and His Moving Comics but often just called Little Nemo, after McCay’s comic strip. Most of the video is a dramatization of how the animation came about. The actual animation happens about eight minutes in. McCay later went on to produce Gertie the Dinosaur, which many of us learned was the “first” animated movie. -via Buzzfeed
