Murder Mystery At The Met

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 02:15 AM PDT

Something dastardly is afoot in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it is up to the guests to figure out whodunit-by completing a scavenger hunt. A company called Watson Adventures has organized a fun yet cerebral murder mystery in the museum, where the detectives must solve the crime via clues linked to works of art throughout the Met. Those who’ve been say that solving the crime is delightfully difficult, and feels like something you’d find in a Dan Brown novel. If you want to get in on the fun you may not have to wait very long, because Watson Adventures already has plans to bring the mystery to museums all over the country, with stories and clues created specifically for each museum’s collection. Now you have an excuse to go lurking around your favorite museum after hours!

Kid Makes A Wish For His Own Video Game

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 01:57 AM PDT

At the Make-A-Wish Foundation, they’re used to granting some of the strangest wishes one could ever imagine, but nobody has ever asked for their own video game. That is until Owain Weinert, a 9 year old who has been living with Leukemia for nearly two years, told the miracle workers that he had an idea for a video game that he wanted so see produced. The result is a tower defense game called Allied Star Police made and distributed by PopCap Games, and as if it isn’t cool enough that a kid so young came up with his own game, it’s free on iTunes right now. We wish little Owain all the best, and can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

Is The Last Zodiac Code Cracked?

Posted: 23 Jul 2011 01:09 AM PDT

If you’re familiar with the Zodiac Killer, then you know he created a number of coded messages, many of which took years to crack. At long last, his final unsolved message may be ciphered. A hobbiest code breaker claims that when deciphered, it reads:

“KILL SLF DR HELP ME KILL MYSELF GAS CHAMBER AEIOUR DAYS QUESTIONSABLE EVERYY WAKING MOMENT IM ALIVE MY PR IDE LOST I CAST GO ON LIVING IN THIS WAY KILLING PEOPLE I HAV KILLD SO MANY PEOPLE CANT HELP MYSELF IM SO AN GRY I COULD DO MY THINK IM ALONE IN THIS WORLD MY W HOLE LIFE FUL O LIES IM UNABLE TO STOP BY THE TIME YOU SOLVE THISI WILL HAV KILLD ELEVEN PEOPLE PLEASE HELP ME STOP KILLING PEOPLE PLEASE MY NAME IS LEIGH ALLEN”

What do you guys think? Is it real or just a hopeful codebreaker’s attempt to make sense of something beyond his abilities?

Glowsticks + Blenders = Yogurt Commercial

(YouTube)

In making what Bon Yurt calls “the best afterparty imaginable,” this ad for the company’s yogurt shows a team of artists going BlendTec on several thousand glowsticks before pumping them into 700 glasses through about 200 meters of plastic tubing to make a neon equalizer display. I don’t know what this has to do with yogurt, but it looks like awesome fun times.

Bobcat Has Highly Uncomfortable Hideout

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:56 PM PDT

Where does a bobcat hide out from a menacing mountain lion? Atop a 40-foot tall Saguaro cactus, of course. As uncomfortable as his thorny perch may be, it’s gotta hurt less than being eaten by a bigger cat.

The photos were captured in Gold Canyon, on the foot of the Superstition Mountains.

The bobcat was trying to get away from a mountain lion that was stalking it, explains the photographer Curt Fonger. He darted up a 40-foot saguaro, and there he stayed for the remainder of the day.

Curt Fonger and his wife Marta are living out their golden years on wilderness’ edge in Gold Canyon. With over 40 years of photography experience, Curt recently had a career-defining moment.

“I’ve never had the luxury of seeing a bobcat on top of a saguaro,” he says. “Just a beautiful creature, he was displaying himself proudly, kind of looking around, probably trying to see if mister mountain lion was still around… it was almost if he was posing!”

Curt says the golden cat with amber eyes stared back at him, perched on top of the cactus for hours.

“He was pretty relaxed, he kind of laid on top of the saguaro, shut his eyes, almost as if he was sleeping.”

The bobcat eventually came down, but Curt and Marta are still riding high.

“It was that Kodak moment I think every photographer lives for.”

C3PO and R2D2 Set a Good Example

This 1980s PSA from the lovable Star Wars droids is so hilariously nonsensical that it almost works. Artoo could conceivably smoke all he likes, though I don’t know why he’d bother, but he won’t–for the children. Love it. I think a reprisal is in order, though, because “You don’t want to sell me death sticks, ” and “You want to go home and rethink your life,” would be much more effective. Awesomely Untranslatable Words From Around The World

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 11:18 AM PDT

There are certain words that only exist in one language, evolved from one culture and do not translate into any other. Here is a list of some of the most interesting including my favorite, this Russian word:

Toska Russian – Vladmir Nabokov describes it best: "No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom."

No-Budget Indie Film Has Grossed $200K in iTunes Sales

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 10:42 AM PDT

For every filmmaker who has maxed out their credit cards and never seen a dime in profit, this story will be sure to drive them crazy. A pair of brothers have shot and produced a feature film for “no-budget” (or at least a very minimal budget) and earned a reported $200K in iTunes sales.

Not a single dime was spent on filming or producing the movie. The brothers’ only expense was hotels, food and taxis which they would have incurred had they been on vacation instead of shooting a film.

The movie climbed as high as #43 in iTunes Top 100 Movie chart and has grossed over $200,000 in profits. There was no expensive marketing budget, either. Most sales were generated by word of mouth or circulation on social networks.

Dolphins Have Super-Healing and Regenerative Powers

Are dolphins secretly super heroes? It appears that our aquatic friends have some incredible healing powers not found in other animals.

Dolphins who suffer shark bites seem to feel very little pain, and they’re resistant to infection and hemorrhaging. Plus when they heal, the contours of their bodies return almost to normal, even though other animals would have huge, malformed scars.

10 Most Influential Media Moguls in History

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:52 AM PDT

With the scandal unfolding in Britain we see just how powerful someone like Rupert Murdoch really is. However there have been many like him before as we see in this list of some of the most powerful media moguls in history. My favorite is Joseph Pulitzer (pictured).  You know you have power when you have facial hair like that.

Since the dawn of mass media, newspapers, radio and television have all been used to inform and educate the public. They have also been used to whip mobs into a frenzy, control the world of politics and consolidate their owners' power. These media moguls all straddled the line between entertainment and politics, preaching to the public and wielding an immense influence over lawmakers and politicians.

Smelly, Sweaty Knights in Shining Armor

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 07:08 AM PDT

Medieval knighthood sounds like a romantic career in fiction. What a life of chivalry was really like doesn’t seem all that great. A team of scientists tried to replicate the work of a knight clad in up to 110 pounds of metal by dressing up volunteer historical re-enactors from the Royal Armories in London, and putting them on treadmills. Even though they were used to wearing armor, you better believe they worked up a sweat!

Sure enough, the researchers found, armor was exhausting. The men used 2.3 times as much energy to walk while wearing the armor than without it, and 1.9 times as much to run. Being outfitted for battle turned out to be even more tiring than hauling around a backpack of the same weight would've been. As it turns out, covering your legs with enormous, heavy metal plates makes moving around a lot harder.

Lawn Chair Wheelchairs

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 07:03 AM PDT

Don Schoendorfer makes wheelchairs out of lawn chairs and bicycle wheels. His hobby was inspired by a woman in India who crawled across the dirt because she had no wheelchair. After building 100 of the inexpensive chairs, Schoendorfer founded the organization Free Wheelchair Mission in order to get the chairs shipped to those who need them worldwide.

It costs less than $60 to have each chair made, shipped and delivered to “some of the most remote corners of the globe,” according to Schoendorfer’s website, freewheelchairmission.org.

Better yet, the recipients don’t have to pay a dime for their new mobility.

Schoendorfer says he hopes to distribute 20-million wheelchairs in total.

60 Miniature Heads Used in Phrenology

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 06:43 AM PDT

The Science Museum in London has a collection of sixty tiny models of the human head made for a student of Johann Kaspar Spurzheim, a prominent German phrenologist, in 1831. Phrenology is the belief that the shape of the human skull reflects the shape of the human brain beneath it, which is in turn shaped by certain personality traits. Studying a person’s skull thus reveals his/her personality, abilities, and character:

These heads are numbered according to Spurzheim's classification. The heads may have been used to teach phrenology but were probably made as a general reference collection. A wide range of different heads are present. For instance, head number 54 is that of a scientific man; head number 8 is recorded as the head of an 'idiot'.

Great Moments in Presidential Debt

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:14 AM PDT

Properly managing one’s finances seems like it should be a prerequisite for running a country. But these U.S. leaders could have used more dead presidents in their wallets.

HARRY TRUMAN -THE BUCK STOPPED THERE

Prior to becoming president, Harry Truman’s ventures in private business earned him more trouble than profit. He lost several thousand dollars investing in a fruitless zinc mine, and even more money funding a short-lived haberdashery in Kansas City. Eventually he began to view politics as a more stable career than business. Even as a senator, Truman was forced to borrow money and live more modestly, as he sent much of his income home to support his farm in Missouri.

Upon leaving the White House in 1953, Truman refused to exploit his former office as a stepping stone into the business world. This left him with just a small plot of land off which to live. He hoped that his memoirs would bring in extra cash, but between paying the ghostwriters and the taxes, Truman netted just $37,000 from the book. His insolvency grew so pathetic that President Eisenhower passed the Former Presidents Act in 1958, which created a pension for Truman. The former president made use of every last bit of it, leading an active life until his death at the age of 88.

THOMAS JEFFERSON -LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF  MONEYLENDERS

During the 1700s, tobacco rarely turned a consistent profit. So Thomas Jefferson, like many plantation owners of his time, lived in perpetual debt. Eager to look the part of a Virginia gentleman, Jefferson borrowed money for expensive clothes, furniture, and wine. He continued to indulge in this lifestyle through his presidency and into retirement. Jefferson’s beloved country estate of Monticello was especially draining on his finances. Its high ceilings and large windows led to excessive heating costs, and its flat roof and cavernous skylights leaked with every rainfall. by the time Jefferson was in his late seventies, the neglected bills had piled up and doubled with interest.

To lessen his financial woes, Jefferson started selling off the things he loved. He sold his entire collection of books to a Congressional library and even hatched a plot to give away a large parcel of land in a statewide lottery. When news of the lottery (and its purpose) reached his former colleagues, generous donations poured in. Despite these efforts, Jefferson died in debt. Two decades later, his grandson finally paid off the founding father’s tab.

ULYSSES S. GRANT -THE BOOK DEAL OF THE CENTURY

In 1881, former president Ulysses S. Grant settled into his retirement with what seemed like a prudent investment in his son’s Wall Street firm, Grant & Ward. But when the younger Grant’s partner, Ferdinand Ward, absconded to Canada with all the money, Grant found himself short $150,000.

Grant considered it a matter of personal honor to pay back the debt in full and rejected any financial assistance. He sold off much of his land, but it wasn’t enough to cover his losses. To generate more income, the former general wrote a series of articles about his Civil War exploits, which the ever-humble Grant doubted anyone would read. Surprisingly, the articles were a huge success, and Grant’s longtime friend Mark Twain convinced him to pen his personal memoirs. Completed just before his death in 1885, Grant’s autobiography became one of the best-selling books of its time -earning more than half a million dollars.
