Woman Goes Into Labor During Bar Exam, Finishes Test

Posted: 31 Jul 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Many women who are nine months pregnant would never even consider taking the bar exam in their condition. Of those that would, practically no one would actually keep taking the exam once they started going into labor, but one Northwestern Law student did.

Before the start of the afternoon session on day two (Wednesday) of the Illinois bar exam, the very pregnant MBE mentioned to the proctors the possibility that she might give birth during the test. She asked if she could leave early in the event that she went into labor; they agreed.

So Mother Bar Exam sat down for the afternoon session of the Multistate Bar Exam ("MBE"). Not long after, she started going into labor — not a little discomfort, but full-on labor…She continued to answer MBE questions, while in active labor, before finishing the exam early, at 4 p.m.

Upon completing the exam, Mother Bar Exam notified the proctors that she was done and needed to leave, seeing as she was in the middle of giving birth to a child and all. Normally candidates are not allowed to leave the room early, but in this case the proctors accommodated her (especially since she had mentioned the issue to them beforehand).

Next time someone complains to you about going in to labor for 12 hours, ask them if they had to take a bar exam in the process, because that’s the new standard of tough deliveries.

If Ben & Jerry Worked With George Lucas

Breakfast Safari created this delightful fake Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor and man, do I wish it was real. They already have ice cube trays featuring Han, all you’d have to do would be use them to mass produce the chocolate candies.

This Sure Sums Up Zelda

How the Rotating Corridor Scene of Inception Was Filmed

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 08:02 PM PDT

Remember the zero gravity fight / rotating corridor scene in the movie Inception? How did they film it?

Director Christopher Nolan explains (hint: they actually built a real rotating set):

... I spent just a couple of minutes on this set while it's rotating and what it does to your brain is extremely difficult to operate ... your whole sense of up and down and your sense of scale and your sense of orientation completely dissolves when the set starts moving.

Font for Dyslexia

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 08:01 PM PDT

Watching my kids learning how to read made me truly appreciate how difficult it can be to distinguish letters of the Roman alphabet. If you think about it, a lot of the letters are truly alike - b and p are the same thing with different rotation, v and w look almost the same and so on. Dyslexics have even greater trouble because their brains constantly "mix up" these letters.

There's a lot we now know on how to help treat dyslexics, but can our choice of letterform help? Christian Boer of studiostudio, a graphic designer with dyslexia, has created a font called "Dyslexie" that is designed to emphasize the differences between similar letters to make it easier for dyslexics to read.

The result is encouraging: "The study at the University of Twente showed that people with dyslexia made fewer reading errors when they use the dyslexia font compared to using standard font."

Virtual Horse in Second Life, Real Lawsuit in Real Life

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 08:00 PM PDT

I learned three things about Second Life today. First is that apparently people still play it (is "play" the right word here, Second Lifers?). Second, you can breed virtual horse that you can ride. And third, you can get sued over virtual animals.

Justin Scheck of The A-Hed in Wall Street Journal has the story:

A palomino mare named Star grazes on Debbie DeLouise's clover meadow, hanging out at a salt lick there and frolicking with her foal Holly.

But a legal dispute may imperil their pastoral bliss: It threatens to close the only store where Ms. DeLouise can buy food for Star and Holly. Without their special diet, the horses would waste away and turn green.

"If there's no food, I'm not sure what will happen," says Ms. DeLouise, a Long Island, N.Y., librarian. "I certainly hope no one has to find out."

Star and Holly aren't real horses. They exist only within Linden Research Inc.'s "Second Life," an online virtual world where people can fashion a new existence. But while the buying, breeding and riding of horses happens in the virtual world, litigation over them happens in real-life federal court.

The case brushing up against the horses owned by Ms. DeLouise—whose "Second Life" avatar, or alter ego, is a younger, bigger-haired version of herself—began last fall.

Virtual rabbit maker Ozimals Inc., and Amaretto Ranch Breedables LLC, the creator of Ms. DeLouise's horses, share a similar business model. Each sells cheap virtual animals to participants of "Second Life." Both make the bulk of their money by selling the food these pets need. Demand for the chow is heightened by a secondary animal market, in which bunny and horse enthusiasts breed their virtual animals and sell the offspring—sometimes for hundreds of dollars in the case of beasts with rare colors.

Ozimals, based in Pelham, Ala., has alleged that Amaretto copied its software, using horses instead of rabbits.

A Real Society of Super Sleuths Who Solve Unsolved Crimes

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 07:03 PM PDT

In September 1990, retired detectives and other criminal investigation professionals came together to have lunch and talk about unsolved crimes. Now the Vidocq Society, comprised of some of the best investigators in the world, meets once a month to take on the hardest, coldest cases in the US:

Vidocq Society meetings – billed on its website as ‘Cuisine and Crime-Solving’ – now take place in Philadelphia on the third Thursday of every month; members gather beneath the electric chandeliers of the wood-panelled Downtown Club to have lunch and, afterwards, to help find a solution to a cold-case homicide. With 82 full, and more than 100 associate, members – a mix of men and women who must be invited to join by a committee – the society is a voluntary brains trust of retired and working criminologists.

Over the years membership has been drawn from the entire spectrum of judicial and crime-fighting institutions: from the local district attorney’s office to Interpol; from Philadelphia’s medical examiner to renowned FBI profilers. The society boasts members from 17 US states and 11 other countries around the world.

The society only takes murder cases that have been unsolved for at least two years and in which the victim was not a known criminal. Their work has led the exoneration of wrongfully convicted prisoners and the conviction of murders who thought that they had gotten away cleanly. 7 Impressive Castles Located on Cliffs

Castles on cliffs are the stuff of fairytales. Roger Hayhurst: Knight Warrior

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 01:07 PM PDT

Nineteen-year-old Roger Hayhurst is the not-so-secret identity of Salford, Greater Manchester’s Knight Warrior–a gentle-looking guy who peacefully intervenes in drunken pub brawls and street fights. In his blue and black Lycra costume, the Knight Warrior is a force for decency and goodness, though his actions scare his mom a bit.

Mr Hayhurst … says his only special power is a supernatural desire to make the world a better place.

'When people see me coming up, it does tend to stun them into silence,' he said.

'I just carry on trying to get them to calm down, and eventually most of them do. If I think things are getting a bit hairy, I just back off and phone the police.

‘They know what I am doing and have been very kind to me. Some of my friends think I am a bit odd but all I want to do is try and get people to like each other. I just want to do good in the world.'

Mr Hayhurst said his main aim was to sort out rows between people coming out of pubs or simply fighting on the streets. He lives with his mother Jennifer, 61, and grandad Alfred, 91, and also hands out clothing and food parcels to the homeless in Manchester city centre.

Mrs Hayhurst said she was always 'slightly worried' when her son went out – usually between 9pm and 2am, at least three times a week.

'His absolute genuineness is his best defence,' she said. 'He is one of the kindest young men I know.'

In Seattle, care worker turned martial arts expert Phoenix Jones has been stabbed twice and shot once on similar crime-fighting missions on the streets of the US west coast city.

Princess Leia Costume Made of Duct Tape

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 07:03 AM PDT

First off, it’s awesome to have a Princess Leia costume. You know, with the buns and all. But how cool is it to have a Princess Leia costume made of duct tape? Yeah, that’s what this is!

Lindsay Boo Barrasse made this out of tons of duct tape. She gives us some details about how it was done:

the dress lining is a white button down shirt and a pillow case for
the skirt – all put together as one piece

I used 4 1/2 rolls of 15 yard white duct tape, one roll of black for the hair and one roll of silver.

the belt buckle piece was a vintage bucket painted with silver nail polish and a small piece of cut cardboard

my blaster is an authentic star wars blaster hasbro 2004

The dress would be a modern size 2-4

Definitely a conversation-starter!

The 20 Greatest Sharks in Pop Culture History

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 06:31 AM PDT

Shark Week starts this Sunday! Who’s your favorite pop culture shark? I have several, and they’re all here in a list of the greatest sharks from movies, TV, and even viral news. I bet you’ll see some you’d forgotten about -like SNL’s Land Shark.

One of the most classic recurring sketches in Saturday Night Live history, Chevy Chase’s Land Shark character was basically a shark who would coerce its victims into opening their doors by pretending to be plumbers, repairmen or, in this clip, a member of Unicef.

Once the unsuspecting people opened their doors, the Land Shark would eat them whole, making a comment on the ridiculousness of the hysteria over sharks after the release of Jaws.

That’s my favorite, but there are sharks for every generation in the list at Ranker. Some text NSFW. Link

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

This past week, Neatorama focused on some big events in our feature articles. Comic-Con in San Diego had the whole internet abuzz! Sites from all over sent us links, but we had our own reporter covering the event. Jill Harness didn’t disappoint, either, as she brought back tons of pictures. See the best of them in the post 65 Seriously Great Comic Con Costumes.

We also had The Final Shuttle Mission, which went up on the Spotlight Blog on Wednesday, since we wanted to present all those gorgeous photographs in a larger format. Thanks to Logan Kugler, Steve Pemberton, and Sean Tamblyn for bringing it to us.

Jill also continued her series on Disneyland attractions and their history with Neatorama Facts: Star Tours.

Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader brought us the story of America’s playground in Coney Island: Dreamland by the Sea.

Paper Airplane Producers: Morning Types vs. Evening Types came to us from the Annals of Improbable Research.

And from mental_floss magazine, we got a bunch of interesting stories together in Ten Incredible Perfect Moments in the History of Editing.

Have you seen the new Captain America movie yet? We teamed up with Geeks Are Sexy this week to give away a Captain America Mystery Box! The prizes are not limited to movie swag, but also include stuff from the NeatoShop. The contest is still open. Yes, there are hundreds of entries, but you can’t win if you don’t enter!

Want more? Be sure to check our Facebook page every day for extra content, contests, discussions, videos, and links you won’t find here. Also, our Twitter feed will keep you updated on what’s going around the web in real time. And if you have kids getting ready to go back to school, get them something to make them feel special like a lunch box or backpack from the NeatoShop!
