Woman Goes Into Labor During Bar Exam, Finishes Test Posted: 31 Jul 2011 02:12 AM PDT Many women who are nine months pregnant would never even consider taking the bar exam in their condition. Of those that would, practically no one would actually keep taking the exam once they started going into labor, but one Northwestern Law student did.
Next time someone complains to you about going in to labor for 12 hours, ask them if they had to take a bar exam in the process, because that’s the new standard of tough deliveries. Link Via The Mary Sue |
Harry Potter Theme Turned Metal Posted: 31 Jul 2011 02:01 AM PDT If you liked the heavy metal version of the Batman theme that Zeon posted earlier, you’ll probably dig this great Harry Potter theme converted to the same rocking genre. Via Geeks Are Sexy |
How To Make Your Own Death Star Dress Posted: 31 Jul 2011 01:57 AM PDT Now that you’ve probably seen your good share of Comic Con costumes, I’m sure you’ve seen this great Death Star dress. If you want to make your own, the creator can give you some tips over on the Official Star Wars Blog. |
If Ben & Jerry Worked With George Lucas Posted: 31 Jul 2011 01:49 AM PDT Breakfast Safari created this delightful fake Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor and man, do I wish it was real. They already have ice cube trays featuring Han, all you’d have to do would be use them to mass produce the chocolate candies. |
A Baby Chimp Feeding A Baby Tiger Posted: 31 Jul 2011 01:12 AM PDT This might just be one of the cutest videos ever. Like humans, chimps are born with a strong maternal instinct and when instinct and friendship are paired up like this, there’s no ignoring the cuteness. |

Lissa Treiman watched a game of Zelda being played and learned one thing about the game: "There's a lot of grass that keeps growing back, and sometimes it has money in it." Just 'bout sums it up, Lissa! Link (get it?) |
How the Rotating Corridor Scene of Inception Was Filmed Posted: 30 Jul 2011 08:02 PM PDT
Remember the zero gravity fight / rotating corridor scene in the movie Inception? How did they film it? Director Christopher Nolan explains (hint: they actually built a real rotating set):

Cutting Edge Fashion by Iris Van Herpen Posted: 30 Jul 2011 08:01 PM PDT

Watching my kids learning how to read made me truly appreciate how difficult it can be to distinguish letters of the Roman alphabet. If you think about it, a lot of the letters are truly alike - b and p are the same thing with different rotation, v and w look almost the same and so on. Dyslexics have even greater trouble because their brains constantly "mix up" these letters. There's a lot we now know on how to help treat dyslexics, but can our choice of letterform help? Christian Boer of studiostudio, a graphic designer with dyslexia, has created a font called "Dyslexie" that is designed to emphasize the differences between similar letters to make it easier for dyslexics to read. The result is encouraging: "The study at the University of Twente showed that people with dyslexia made fewer reading errors when they use the dyslexia font compared to using standard font." Virtual Horse in Second Life, Real Lawsuit in Real Life Posted: 30 Jul 2011 08:00 PM PDT
I learned three things about Second Life today. First is that apparently people still play it (is "play" the right word here, Second Lifers?). Second, you can breed virtual horse that you can ride. And third, you can get sued over virtual animals. Justin Scheck of The A-Hed in Wall Street Journal has the story:

A Real Society of Super Sleuths Who Solve Unsolved Crimes Posted: 30 Jul 2011 07:03 PM PDT In September 1990, retired detectives and other criminal investigation professionals came together to have lunch and talk about unsolved crimes. Now the Vidocq Society, comprised of some of the best investigators in the world, meets once a month to take on the hardest, coldest cases in the US:
The society only takes murder cases that have been unsolved for at least two years and in which the victim was not a known criminal. Their work has led the exoneration of wrongfully convicted prisoners and the conviction of murders who thought that they had gotten away cleanly. Posted: 30 Jul 2011 03:20 PM PDT In honor of the newly released Smurfs movie, which I helped convert to 3d along with many other fine people at Legend 3d, I would like to share with you this informational video on ways to serve Smurfs-for dinner! Watch as embittered little blue guys come to terms with their fate at the hands of a sadistic looking chef, who enjoys his job just a little too much. It’s smurferifically smurfistic! |
Epic Metal Rendition Of Batman Theme Posted: 30 Jul 2011 03:08 PM PDT The Kings of Geek Metal, Powerglove, are back with another Batman related redux. This time around, they’re tackling the theme song to the animated series, and rocking it harder than it’s ever been rocked before! Check out the video, complete with classic video game graphics and the guys decked out in their most metal attire. 7 Impressive Castles Located on Cliffs Posted: 30 Jul 2011 02:24 PM PDT Castles on cliffs are the stuff of fairytales. And sure, it was a security measure, building the kingdom’s stronghold in the least accessible location, but that doesn’t make these seven beautiful castles located on cliffs any less impressive or fairytale-like. The one above is Alcazar in Segovia, Spain, built in the 12th century and now open to tourists year round and home to the Spanish General Military Archives. Link |
Roger Hayhurst: Knight Warrior Posted: 30 Jul 2011 01:07 PM PDT Nineteen-year-old Roger Hayhurst is the not-so-secret identity of Salford, Greater Manchester’s Knight Warrior–a gentle-looking guy who peacefully intervenes in drunken pub brawls and street fights. In his blue and black Lycra costume, the Knight Warrior is a force for decency and goodness, though his actions scare his mom a bit.

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 10:15 AM PDT So by now you’ve probably heard about Comic Con, n’est pas? Well, it ain’t all about costumes and A-List celebrities and nerds, you know — it’s about sci-fi graffiti in a place where *everybody* will get it. These images were captured by Comic Con devotee J. Pidgeon at several San Diego crosswalks near the convention center. Check out the Matt Smith and Peter Davidson crosswalks along with other convention images on his Flickr set. Posted: 30 Jul 2011 09:20 AM PDT The German Society of Nature Photographers — the trippingly named Gesellschaft Deutscher Tierfotografen — holds a contest every year for the best photographs. Featured in the Guardian are some of the winners with some truly stunning photographs. Check out this year’s winners on display at the Guardian’s website, including this wonderful example by Bence Máté taken in Hungary. Who do you think won this standoff? My bet’s on the bird. I have several, and they’re all here in a list of the greatest sharks from movies, TV, and even viral news. I bet you’ll see some you’d forgotten about -like SNL’s Land Shark.

Posted: 30 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT This past week, Neatorama focused on some big events in our feature articles. Comic-Con in San Diego had the whole internet abuzz! Sites from all over sent us links, but we had our own reporter covering the event. Jill Harness didn’t disappoint, either, as she brought back tons of pictures. See the best of them in the post 65 Seriously Great Comic Con Costumes. We also had The Final Shuttle Mission, which went up on the Spotlight Blog on Wednesday, since we wanted to present all those gorgeous photographs in a larger format. Thanks to Logan Kugler, Steve Pemberton, and Sean Tamblyn for bringing it to us. Jill also continued her series on Disneyland attractions and their history with Neatorama Facts: Star Tours. Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader brought us the story of America’s playground in Coney Island: Dreamland by the Sea. Paper Airplane Producers: Morning Types vs. Evening Types came to us from the Annals of Improbable Research. And from mental_floss magazine, we got a bunch of interesting stories together in Ten Incredible Perfect Moments in the History of Editing. Have you seen the new Captain America movie yet? We teamed up with Geeks Are Sexy this week to give away a Captain America Mystery Box! The prizes are not limited to movie swag, but also include stuff from the NeatoShop. The contest is still open. Yes, there are hundreds of entries, but you can’t win if you don’t enter! Want more? Be sure to check our Facebook page every day for extra content, contests, discussions, videos, and links you won’t find here. Also, our Twitter feed will keep you updated on what’s going around the web in real time. And if you have kids getting ready to go back to school, get them something to make them feel special like a lunch box or backpack from the NeatoShop! |
The Most Awkward 404 Error Page in the World Posted: 30 Jul 2011 05:59 AM PDT Steve Lambert, an artist, set out to create the most awkward 404 error page. That’s what’s generated when a server cannot find a requested webpage. He’s definitely accomplished that goal. At the link, you can view a long video in which Lambert greets the viewer like a house guest who hasn’t figured out that the party is long since over.
