PHOENIX, Ariz. (July 28, 2011) - Second round of games are complete following tonight's 8 pm matches at the US Youth Soccer National Championships. The Under-17 Boys and Girls, Under-18 Boys and Under-19 Girls played their second matches of the championships under the lights of the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix.
The field of 60 national qualifiers is comprised of the nation's top teams in the Under-14 through Under-19 age groups for boys and girls. Many in the field found themselves in a must-win situation today to remain in contention for a spot in this weekend’s National Championship finals.
Recap of this morning's matches: [ link http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=19&d=227&mid=698003&m=1253 ]
Teams will each play one preliminary game today through Friday to determine who advances to play for the national titles awarded to winners of the national championship finals played Saturday night (U14 and U15) and Sunday morning (U16-U19). Teams at the national championships have earned their place via success in the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series or US Youth Soccer National League. The championships provide college coaches with a premier stage to evaluate future collegiate players, offering a tremendous impact to players and their families. In addition to collegiate staff coaches, members of U.S. Soccer National Staff are also on-site this week analyzing players for potential national team play. A few highlights from tonight's matches…
Under-17 Girls
After a scoreless first half, the second 45 minutes between Under-17 Girls NSA Premier Fury (IL) and NASA 12 Elite 11 (GA) featured plenty of drama. NASA struck first as Emily Sonnett headed home a cross from Brittney Reed to claim the 1-0 lead. Looking for an equalizer, NSA began to commit more numbers forward. This plan paid off as NSA’s Christina Ordonez leveled the score in the 72 nd minute. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Under-17 Girls FC Pennsylvania Strikers (E-PA) followed up a draw on day won with a convincing 3-1 decision over Sockers FC (IL). After falling behind in the 3 rd minute, FC Penn Strikers rattled off three unanswered goals in the first half by Brendi Ernst, Cassandra Pecht and Kaitlin McNamara to secure the 3-1 victory.
Under-17 Boys
After three trips to the national finals without a shot at the title game, Under-17 Boys Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (MI) have one foot in the door after two games as only a giant swing in goal differential could prevent them from finally playig for it all after a 4-1 win over Dallas Texans Red Dallas (N-TX). Greg Timmer put Crew ahead with a 21 st minute goal as they headed into the breakup 1-0, but Adam Kemp leveled for the Texans in the 56 th . Crew regained the lead on a Texans own goal in the 69 th , but two Sean Conerty strikes in the final two minutes ensured the victory and put Crew on the verge of the title game.
In a similar position to Grand Rapids Crew, Under-17 Boys Penn Fusion Celtic (E-PA) are also looking for their first trip to the final after failing to advance in a previous visit to the National Championships, and they also are on the verge of the title game with only a five point swing in goal differential standing in their way. Celtic defeated TSC 94 Black (OK) 2-0 to move into the second spot in the group on goals from Stefan Dasbach in the 44 th and Chad Craig in the 83 rd for their second victory in as many days.

Since its creation in 1974, US Youth Soccer has added 11 divisions to the national championship tournament, most recently with the Under-14 and Under-15 Boys and Girls divisions in 2001 to create the current format.
Annually the National Championship Series provides the nation's top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In 2011, more than 560 college coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional Championships.
