Phoenix, Ariz. (July 26, 2011) - The 2011 US Youth Soccer National Championships http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=25&d=227&mid=698003&m=1233 officially began today as more than 1,800 players, coaches, referees and officials gathered for the player luncheon at the JW Marriott in Phoenix, Ariz. Sixty teams from the across the country are competing for national crowns, in Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups, and opened the week of competition honoring the teams’ accomplishments to this point.
Derek Brownell, President of Arizona Youth Soccer Association, addressed those in attendance and commending players for their hard work and persistence to reach this point.
"You have worked through challenging training sessions, late-night homework sessions, and battled through injuries to make sure you are able to compete this week. Thank you to the coaches for your commitment, for working through formations and tactics, planning and executing effective training sessions, and for guiding the players on game day," Brownell said. "Last but not least--I would like to thank all the parents for your dedication, for rearranging your schedule to get your kids to practices and games and helping your children understand the value of both wins and losses."
US Youth Soccer President, John Sutter, also addressed the players saying, "The National Championship Series is the premier event for our competitive players and is the process we use to crown the best teams each year. Your team has played its way into Nationals and we are down from over 10,000 teams to only 60. That is an incredible achievement and you should be very proud of yourselves. The competition this week will be extraordinary. It will be top team against top team. I encourage you to honor the game and the ideals of sportsmanship and to exude grace in victory and in defeat."
The keynote speaker of the luncheon was John O'Brien, former member of the Men's National Team and US Youth Soccer player himself. Admittedly, O'Brien said he was far more comfortable speaking with his feet than with his mouth. The former youth player related to the experiences of his audience, and still regretted losing out on his chance at playing in the US Youth Soccer National Championships with a loss in the Region IV Championship final.
"Learn from your experience. You might be feeling excitement, or nervousness—be open to it," O'Brien said. "You're all champions to be here and have done an enormous amount of work to get here. Experience this moment with all your mind, body and heart and good things will come."
The National Championships player luncheon peaked with excitement as the audience watched a highlight video tracking their successes at the Regional Championships and in the National League.
The final ascent to the national championship for these teams begins with round robin play Wednesday, July 27 with games at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Preliminary games continue Thursday and Friday at the same times. National champions will be crowned on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31.
The regional highlight videos are available on the event's official website, http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=26&d=227&mid=698003&m=1233 http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=27&d=227&mid=698003&m=1233 In addition to a video http://idevmail.americaneagle.com/link.aspx?l=28&d=227&mid=698003&m=1233 highlight of today's player luncheon, the site will feature daily video clips including game footage and interviews.
