Notes from a few of today's games...
U-17 Girls
Two US Youth Soccer National League teams met up on the opening day of play for the Under-17 Girls, and it came down to the wire as FC Pennsylvania Strikers (E-PA) edged Empire United SA-Syracuse (NY-W) 3-2 in the final minutes. Empire took the lead in the 19th minute on a strike from Kindrah Kohne, but FC Penn grabbed the lead before the break with goals from Daija Griffin in the 27th and Gabriella Carbone in the 37th. With just 10 minutes left to play, Tessa Devereaux evened the game for Empire, but FC Penn had some magic left as Cheyenne Spade netted the game winner with two minutes left to play.
The Baltimore Bays (MD) just missed the 2010 semifinal round after finishing second in their group, but they got off to a good start toward making the elimination round this year with a 5-0 opening win over Jamestown Fortuna (RI). The Bays were up two goals just 10 minutes in from Alexandra Kasun and Riley Barger, and Nicole Hudson extended the lead to three before halftime. Kelsie Maloney grabbed a second half double for the Bays to make it 5-0 and ensure the victory.
Under-17 Girls Albertson 93 Fury (E-NY) is looking to improve on their 2010 campaign after finishing third in the group and failing to advance, and they’re off and running this year with a 10-0 shutout over Nordic Premier (VT). Cari Roccaro notched the first two goals for Albertson just 15 minutes in and Kari Quinn upped it to three before the 20th. Albertson finished out the scoring with a Kerrianne Madigan hatrick, a Kristi Abbate double, and Charlotte Miller and Melissa Duarte contributed one each for the Eastern New York state champs.
A late second half comeback from a goal down gave Kirkwood Freedom (DE) a 2-1 win over Stars United Thundercats (PA-W) in the U-17 Girls. Stars United took the lead in the 27th minute thanks to Madison Kozlowski, and Stars held onto that lead until late in the second half. Kirkwood mounted the rally on the back of Casey Horney, who’s 62nd and 87th minute goals propelled Kirkwood to an opening day victory.
U-18 Boys
FC Greater Boston Bolts (MA) shot out of the gate on the first day of play for the Under-18 Boys with a 1st minute goal from Michael Miele en route to a 2-0 victory over Garden City Gladiators (E-NY). In a tightly contested match, the one goal lead stood until Andrew Woonton netted an insurance goal in the 70th as the Bolts set up in good position with an opening win.
US Youth Soccer Region I Premier League qualifier, FC Stars of Mass, gave the state of Massachusetts two U-18 Boys victories on the day with their 2-0 defeat of Pittsgrove Premier Futbol 92 Lightning (NJ). A rematch of last year’s semifinal in which FC Stars won 2-1, Star jumped out to an early lead in the 10th minute from Christopher Kafina. Jonathan Silva doubled the lead just before halftime for FC Stars as they held on to take the early advantage in the group over Pittsgrove.
Under-18 Boys Synergy FC (VT) and FSA FC United WHP (CT) faced off in group play last year with FSA claiming a 2-1 victory and advancing to the semifinals. But this year Synergy took command of the group with a 3-1 win and early momentum toward advancing. Nathaniel Horton put Synergy on top half an hour into the match and the Vermont side extended the lead in the 57th through Keagan McDonnell. FSA rallied to bring the score to within one when Ryan Del Monaco tallied with four minutes to play, but Synergy immediately responded with a clinching goal two minutes later from Salomone Felekeni to seal a 3-1 victory.
