Proper rest and sleeping well daily may be the most important activity we can perform
for our good health and well being. Because sleep is so vital to our health, more
and more research is being conducted on the science of sleep. Getting a good night's
sleep not only helps us feel refreshed and ready to face everyday challenges, it's

Sleep is in fact just as important as diet and exercise.[1]
The combination of optimal nutrition and an active lifestyle can improve the quality
of our sleep and our overall quality of life. The complex nature of sleep means
that all nutrients, including amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals are
needed in optimal amounts to support the sleep process. Some of our most important
immune system functions occur only during sleep, as well as some of our most important
antioxidants reactions. In fact, sound sleep requires many nutrients to support

cells use the amino acid tryptophan to make serotonin, much attention has been given

sleep cycle, the falling asleep part. Many animal foods are relatively high in
tryptophan and may be a logical assumption for improving sleep because their tryptophan
could be used to produce serotonin. However, these same animal foods also contain
fairly high amounts of the excitatory amino acids (like tyrosine) that may produce
adrenalin and interfere with sound sleep.[3]

Melatonin has been shown to be vital in controlling the aging process. Melatonin
is known as the "regulator of regulators". Melatonin sends out the messages that
control all of our different hormones. This balance of our hormones helps to keep
us healthy. An imbalance of hormones ultimately results in premature aging and of
course the eventually inevitable natural aging. At around age 40, it is believed
that the production of melatonin starts to diminish. This decline causes changes
in the operation of our body's cells causing our cells to shift from repair and
regeneration to aging and degeneration.
Degeneration and age-related diseases such as arteriosclerosis, metabolic conditions,
cancer, autoimmunity and a depressed immune system are promotedby imbalances in
our endocrine (hormonal) system. Healthy levels of melatonin can help to keep our
hormones in balance and promote the feelings that we had when we were younger.[5]
There are many factors that can affect our melatonin production. The exposure to
excessive light in the evening or too little sunlight during the daytime can disrupt
our body's melatonin cycle. Research has shown that it is best to sleep in complete
darkness. Excessive light can disrupt our circadian rhythm and our pineal gland's
production of melatonin. If you have to get up in the middle of the night, try to
use as little as possible. As soon as we turn on a light we immediately cease all
production of melatonin.[6]
The building blocks for natural melatonin production in the body include sufficient
amounts of vitamins B6, B3 (niacinamide), B-12 methylcobalamin and the amino acid
tryptophan. Some of the best food sources of melatonin are tart cherries, bananas,
and tomatoes. Melatonin is also found in food sources such as oats, rice bran, wheatgrass,
and ginger. It has been also shown that dietary melatonin (from plant sources) directly
elevates the circulating level of melatonin in the body.[7]
One of the most effective natural sleep formulations that we know of is Genesis
