 | | | Today's Buzz | | | | | - 50% of all U.S. adults now use social networks
Half of all adult Americans now use social media sites, according to data collected by the Pew Research Center. The center found 65% of all adult Web users in the U.S. use social tools, an increase of four percentage points from a year earlier. Still, older, wealthier and better-educated adults lag the national average, even as they surge ahead in search-engine use and e-reader ownership. Facebook surprised analysts on Friday by pulling the plug on its 4-month-old Deals social-commerce project. The move gives Groupon a little more breathing space, but could underscore concerns about the sustainability of the daily-deals site's business model. "The Groupon group-buying phenomenon is a commodity. There are no barriers to entry. It's just not going to work because everybody offers it and therefore the margins go down," argues Jeremiah Owyang of Altimeter Group. Reuters (8/26) - Google lets Slide slip away
Google quietly shuttered its Slide social-game unit last week, just one year after spending $228 million to acquire the company and its workers. The decision mystified some observers, who had expected Slide's social-gaming expertise to augment Google's push to turn Google+ into a casual gaming platform. "Even allowing for a change in leadership, it's a bizarre sequence of events," notes Erik Sass. The Register (U.K.) (8/26), MediaPost Communications/The Social Graf blog (8/26) - Salesforce.com aims to become a "social enterprise"
Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff is a social media evangelist, promising to use social tools to help big companies engage their customers -- and even using Chatter, the company's own internal social networking tool, to reach out to other Salesforce executives and creatives during his pitch meetings. "Businesses need to become social enterprises. This is more than just websites. Here's how to make your customers your friends," says Benioff. Bloomberg Businessweek (8/29) - Judge: Mo. social media law infringes on teachers' free speech
A Missouri judge ruled Friday that a new state law banning teachers and students from communicating online infringes on teachers' freedom of speech. The judge placed an injunction on a provision of the law, preventing it from going into effect until February. The law, scheduled to be enforced beginning this week, now is expected to be revised by the state legislature with input from educators. The lawmaker who drafted the law said a new version likely will allow districts to make their own decisions regarding online contact between students and teachers. St. Louis Post-Dispatch (8/27) | The Takeaway | | | | | - Red Bull steps back to create viral video hits
To create its viral video hits, Red Bull eliminates as much branding as possible and focuses on creating clips that stand on their own merits. Some recent clips show parkour athletes flinging themselves around exotic locations, with Red Bull logos glimpsed only in passing. "You might not have the budget of a Red Bull but it is important to understand the thinking behind what they do," writes Niall Harbison. TheNextWeb.com (8/27) - How to customize your Google+ experience
Google+ isn't the easiest of the social networks to customize, writes Jesse Stanchak, but it's possible to tailor your experience to your needs through the use of browser plug-ins. Must-have tools include Surplus, which adds a no-distraction content-posting button; Helper, which lets you bookmark Google+ posts for later reading; and Replies and More, which gives users tools for sharing content to other networks. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Social Media (8/29) - Should social media marketers fall for Tumblr?
Companies such as IBM, Huggies, EMI and J. Crew have been building a marketing presence on Tumblr, with most brands aiming to produce short, snappy content in the hope of earning reblogs from other users. Still, marketers say, Tumblr remains a second-string option for most brands: Nice to have, but no substitute for Twitter and Facebook. "Tumblr can be fun, but if you don't have the fundamentals behind your brand online, then it's not something you should be focusing on," said Jason Keath, founder of Social Fresh.
