MANAGING NETWORK IMPACT

Greetings:
Today's network has unprecedented demands on it, and providers are scrambling to maintain a reliable network in the face of tremendous strain. Moreover, the communications space is tasked with bearing a great deal of traffic it didn't create and from which it doesn't directly profit. The extent of the impact that various tech trends is having on the physical network is at the heart of this issue of Pipeline. From M2M to the state of IMS, from the global network to billing on the box, from network integrity to wireless backhaul, this issue of Pipeline looks to explore the network's reality for today and potential for tomorrow.

Enjoy,
Tim Young,
Editor-in-Chief

1. Machines Rule Most people I know remember the day when the only phone in the house was the phone-company- owned beige or avocado beast in the kitchen or hallway. Today, I feel naked without my Blackberry. Tomorrow, if M2M projections come to fruition, my dishwasher will feel the same way...» Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/M2M-Communication-1.php

2. Brave New World
As we stand on the cusp of an all-IP world, it's hard to imagine a world without the internet or a land before mobile. The flammable combination of Web 1.0 with the launch of the mobile era set off a communications network big bang that has literally changed the world in 20 years... » Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/Brave-New-World-1.php

3. Where does IMS stand?
In considering the on-again-off-again relationship between market observers and IMS, I thought back to an article I wrote on the topic in 2005. I recall it mostly for the mix of enthusiasm and sheer bafflement demonstrated by many of the vendors and service providers I spoke to about the technology... » Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/The-State-of-IMS-1.php

4. Billing for Billions
One of the most fascinating aspects of the telecommunications industry is its scale: the enormity of the global communications network and what it takes to keep it afloat is staggering. Take this example: In just a few short years, the world will average two connected devices per person... » Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/Billing-for-Billions-1.php

5. LightSquared Q&A This issue of Pipeline is all about the impact that end-user demand places on the network. However, is it possible for a network to have just as drastic effect on the end-user? That is to say, can an entirely new way of looking at networks and service providers fundamentally change the face of wireless service in one of the highest-ARPU markets in the world? » Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/LightSquared-QA-1.php

6. Network Integrity Practice
Industry best practices in telecommunications have, for many years, been tolerant of data integrity levels of 60 to 80 percent. As long as services operated in silos and operations staff could keep up with network growth, this was expensive and inefficient, but not mission critical...» Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/Network-Integrity-Practice-1.php

7. Easing the Shift to LTE
The technical challenges to shifting from 3G to LTE are stiff. However, the shift is inevitable - traffic volume is rapidly increasing, and exacting users will migrate to other providers if speed and Quality of Service (QoS) standards aren't met...» Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/LTE-Testing-1.php

8. Microwave Backhaul
The introduction of new high-speed 4G mobile technologies is gathering pace, but few operators have a clear understanding of what impact this will have on their backhaul networks. This uncertainty threatens to drive over-investment in backhaul capacity that is not needed, and that operators can ill-afford... » Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/Microwave-Backhaul-1.php

9. NewsWatch
Quarterly reports hit the wires this month from many major carriers and vendors, revealing some interesting trends. In the US, the battle between blue and red continues to rage, and while both carriers reported revenue growth, that metric doesn't tell the whole story. Verizon did outpace AT&T in terms of revenue growth, reporting 6.6% year-over-year revenues for the quarter to AT&T's 2.2%... » Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/NewsWatch-1.php

10. Broadband World Forum
Paris, Anyone?

Like it or not, the summer of 2011 is coming to an end. While the fall trade show season may not be something you are looking forward to, the light at the beginning of the tunnel is Broadband World Forum (BBWF). This event returns to La Defense, Paris, on September 27, 2011. Paris. In September. Our bags are packed...» Read the full article... http://www.pipelinepub.com/0811/OSS_BSS/Broadband-World-Forum-2011-1.php
