Bob Ross Amigurumi Doll

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 12:00 AM PDT

If you miss watching him paint little happy trees, then you can always make your own Bob Ross doll to paint tiny masterpieces on your desktop. At least, that’s what Allison Hoffman of Crafty is Cool did.

Fairy Tales Retold With Balloons

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 11:52 PM PDT

I love these fairy tale recreations by artists Larry Moss and Kelly Cheatle of Airigami.com. Kelly would use Photoshop to alter the images to look more 2D and Larry did the actual bending and twisting of the balloons. See more over at Environmental Graffiti.

10 Amazing Movies That Were Never Made

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 11:14 PM PDT

It’s recently come out that they won’t be making a Lone Ranger movie staring Johnny Depp, but we all know that’s not the only potentially awesome movie that Hollywood canned prematurely. Cracked has a great list of 10 others that were cancelled for a variety of movies. Of course, I’m sure I’m not the only one here who desperately wishes the Ghostbusters 3 movie actually went forward at some point. They also have a few unrelated but fun trivia facts like this one:

Before the original Ghostbusters came around, Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd were in talks to make Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It was scrapped when Aykroyd came up with the idea for Ghostbusters.

Of course, a lot of the other ones would be pretty awesome too.

Catch Birds And Feed Your Cat-At The Same Time

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:23 PM PDT

What’s the hottest new home accessory that will make your life easier and way more fun? Well, it’s probably not this sadistic little number, and if you think this thing looks like fun then you’re sick! Leo Voelker applied for a patent for this strange device, a combination bird catcher and cat feeder, in 1979 and either the guy hates birds or there was a plague of them in his backyard. Feeding your cute little kitty never seemed so gross, and I wouldn’t want to be the one who has to clean out the trap. Oh, according to Leo you won’t have to clean it:

"The cat feeder by its design is self-cleaning since the cat quickly learns to remove the sparrow from the cage."

Thankfully, you won’t be seeing these in your neighborhoods anytime soon, and cats will just have to settle for birds they can catch on their own.

Near Orda, a Russian village in the Ural Mountains, you can find an enormous underwater gypsum cave. It’s one of the largest in the world, with galleries stretching as far as five kilometers. Victor Lyagushkin led a team of divers deep inside to photograph this natural wonder. You can view many beautiful pictures of it at the link. Link -via Fubiz

Fanged Frogs Are Highly Evolved

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:06 PM PDT

These frogs aren’t going to give up their legs lightly. Species of frog are rapidly evolving adaptations, such as the small fangs they’ve grown,  on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, and scientists are amazed by how far they’ve come in such a short period of time. One reason is their lack of competition on the island, another reason being the frogs that live on the island all dwell within their own individual pocket, so as to avoid further rivalry over food. Nine species of frogs on Sulawesi have never been documented by scientist before, and thirteen species have developed the cute little choppers, making them look like something out of a Twilight-Muppets crossover. There’s lots more to read on the subject at PhysOrg.com.

Air Guitar Never Looked So Sweet

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 06:29 PM PDT

Even the most die-hard air band enthusiast knows just how silly they look when they’re jamming out on a drum set or guitar that simply isn’t there. And audiences don’t appreciate the hard work and talent that went in to mimicking musicianship when they can’t see the source of the sweet sounds. Enter Air Band for Kinect on Xbox 360, a game that brings your invisible instruments to life via snazzy neon graphics that will make you feel right at home when you’re playing an epic rendition of “More Than A Feeling”. Now your audience will no longer be disappointed, and you can show them why you’ve been practicing so hard all these years! Kinect Fun Labs-Air Band debuts on August 22nd.

A Really Cool Cosplay Gallery

Take a look at this gallery from ComicsAlliance and see just what every cosplayer wishes they could look like. If only I could get people to clear the floor around the characters when i’m shooting pics at Comic Con!

NYC Mayor Honors NASA's Last Space Shuttle Crew

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 05:24 PM PDT

Hard to believe that the final Space Shuttle mission is over and the USA doesn't have a clear follow up to the shuttle program. However the final shuttle astronauts are being honored in New York City this week, most notably by Mayor Bloomberg.

It wasn’t quite a tickertape parade, but the final space shuttle crew was honored by New York City today (Aug. 17) with a proclamation by the mayor.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared today “STS-135 Atlantis Crew Day” by presenting the four STS-135 astronauts with a plaque during a ceremony at the New York Hall of Science in Queens.

The astronauts landed July 21 on NASA’s 135th and final space shuttle mission, closing out the 30-year program. Now the crew is on a whirlwind tour of New York City that included a stop this morning to meet Sesame Street Muppet Elmo and greet the public at an outdoor science fair.

The Tron Legacy Light Cycle For Real

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 04:47 PM PDT

For the small sum of 55 thousand dollars you can own a replica, drivable Light Cycle from the movie Tron: Legacy. Would you buy this?

This is the illuminated, street-legal motorcycle inspired by the computer animated cycle from the 2010 film Tron: Legacy. Designed for casual cruising and slow ride-bys at shows, it is made from a steel frame covered by a fiberglass cowling that replicates the sleek look of its computer-generated imagery counterpart. Electroluminescent strips built into the tire cowlings, wheel rims, and body illuminate the cycle. It is powered by a fuel-injected Suzuki 996cc, 4-stroke engine. Riders lay at a near-horizontal position astride the padded leather seat, with feet on foot pegs that control its 6-speed constant mesh manual transmission and hands on the handlebars for throttle and braking. The hubless wheels are former truck tires built up then custom-shaped to fit onto one of two counter-rotating rims spinning within each other, providing the broad-tired authenticity of the computer cycles from the movie.

Jersey Shore Cast Member Offered Anti-Endorsement Contract

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:37 PM PDT

A year ago, I mentioned the rumor that the elegant Coach handbag carried by Snooki from Jersey Shore was given to her by one of Coach’s rivals. The plan was to damage Coach’s reputation by associating that brand with Snooki.

Coach isn’t the only brand that is being impacted by negative product placement. Now the clothing company Abercrombie & Fitch is offering Michael "The Situation" Sorrentino, also a cast member on Jersey Shore, money if he will agree to not wear its clothing in public again. A press release from the company stated:

"We understand that the show is for entertainment purposes, but believe this association is contrary to the aspirational nature of our brand, and may be distressing to many of our fans," the statement read.

The company also extended the pay-to-not-play offer to the other Jersey Shore reality stars and said it was "urgently waiting a response."

Newly Discovered Skull Teaches About Dogs

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 02:18 PM PDT

Researchers recently uncovered a canine skull that is over 33,000 years old, making it the oldest evidence of the evolution between wolves and dogs that we’ve ever found.

The skull shows a mixture of traits seen in dogs and wolves. The snout is similar in size to early domesticated dogs in Greenland from around 1,000 years ago, but its large teeth are closer to those found in 31,000-year-old European wolves.

Learn more about the skull and what it means to scientists at the link.

Silicon Valley Billionaire Funding Creation of Artificial Libertarian Islands

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:37 PM PDT

As we have reported before The Seasteading Institute has plans to build floating cities out in the ocean. Now Paypal founder Peter Theil has recently  given  1.25 million dollars to the group in an effort to create Libertarian countries out of these floating cities.

Thiel has been a big backer of the Seasteading Institute, which seeks to build sovereign nations on oil rig-like platforms to occupy waters beyond the reach of law-of-the-sea treaties. The idea is for these countries to start from scratch–free from the laws, regulations, and moral codes of any existing place. Details says the experiment would be “a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons.”

A Brief History of The Ancient Science of Sword Making

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:06 PM PDT

Swords are some of the most interesting and continually chivalrous weapons ever made. That's why even today in movies the bad guy will often wield a sword rather than a gun to make the action that more intimate and "sexy." But how were ancient swords originally created?

The sword is the perennial symbol of empires, knighthood, chivalry and fantasy. But it’s also one of the world’s most ancient technologies, connected with breakthroughs in metallurgy that would change the world. There are even some types of ancient swords so strong that modern science still can’t determine how they were made.

Billboard Shadow Art

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:41 PM PDT

Most companies wouldn’t care for an ad that only makes sense during a certain time of day, but this one is so cool that people are clamoring to see it. Using about 3,000 Newcastle bottle caps, artists Pablo Power and Ellis Gallagher created a San Diego billboard that makes its point by using shadows.
