Have They Remade Back To The Future Yet? Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:23 AM PDT With all of the remakes that keep coming out lately, it’s pretty reasonable to ask if any of your favorite films are going to be remade soon. If your favorite movie happens to be Back To The Future though, you’ll never have to worry again thanks to HaveTheyRemadeBackToTheFutureYet.com. And in case you’re wondering, yes, that is all they answer on that site. Warning: Text on the site might be NSFW. |
Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:04 AM PDT I just posted about a sexy TARDIS corset, but for those geek girls who aren’t into Doctor Who and instead prefer Tron, Etsy seller Artifice Clothing has you covered with these vinyl, glowing cosplay outfits. Link Via Geeks Are Sexy |
Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:00 AM PDT You may have already seen Scanwiches, a site documenting scans of sandwiches, but now’s your chance to enjoy dessert with your sandwiches -through the new site Scandybars that shows a variety of candies after they’ve been sliced in half. Link Via Laughing Squid |
Posted: 21 Aug 2011 02:54 AM PDT While I love geeky art, I think my favorite form of these works has always been mashups between two great sources. BuzzFeed has a great collection of such pieces, including this picture of Darth Valice in Wonderland by DeviantArt user Thumper-001. |
Posted: 21 Aug 2011 02:49 AM PDT Those of you who saw my Comic Con costumes post from this year already saw how many cute TARDIS costumes there were at the convention, but this TARDIS corset just might be one of the sexiest ways you can dress as a big blue box. Link Via Geeks Are Sexy |
Posted: 20 Aug 2011 10:21 PM PDT If you want white tiled floors and cleanrooms, these are not the labs you’re looking for. PopSci has ranked their choices for the 25 most awesome college labs, and the diversity and locations might surprise you. From the experimental mine for demolitions students (who learn to “blow things up extremely well”) at the Missouri University of Science and Technology to the geophysics program at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory–where students wake up before dawn to hike to the top of one of the world’s most active volcanoes–these awesome hands-on programs put your five credit hours of making Punnet squares to shame. Featured careers include game design, rainforest biology, oceanography, brewery and alien-hunting. Link Image: U.S. Geological Survey/Hawaiian Volcano Observatory |
Is Trial by Combat Still Legal in the United States? Posted: 20 Aug 2011 03:16 PM PDT The blogger New Jovian Thunderbolt offers this novel legal argument:
If so, court TV could become a lot more interesting. Link | Photo by Flickr user Patch Heart Photography used under Creative Commons license Previously: Kentucky State Officials Must Swear an Oath Against Dueling |
Scott Pilgrim Gets A Hardcore Reboot Posted: 20 Aug 2011 03:06 PM PDT The folks over at ComicsAlliance have commissioned reboot cover art for indie comics from Kevin Mellon, one of the finest illustrators working in the industry today, and the results are pretty freakin’ awesome. Take this reboot for example, Scott Pilgrim as the kick ass hardcore hero he deserves to be, rendered in a stark and angular style that is befitting his amazing abilities. Each cover comes with a brief synopsis of the rebooted storyline, and if Scott Pilgrim’s is any indication of how future titles will look then we’re in for a real treat: Scott Pilgrim came to the big city full of big dreams about making it as a rap-metal mega-star — at least, until he met Ramona Flowers, the gorgeous hooker-cum-drug mule that he couldn’t seem to get out of his mind. When Ramona finally tries to break ties with her pimp Gideon Graves — a vicious crime lord who has been flooding the streets of Toronto with a dangerous new drug called “Glow” — only Scott can save her from the consortium of increasingly deadly hitmen that Gideon sends to take her out. Now that’s what I call re-envisioning a storyline! Look for more reboots to premiere in the coming months at ComicsAlliance. |

Posted: 20 Aug 2011 02:40 PM PDT (Video Link) Ben Maleson, a mushroom merchant in Brookline, Massachusetts, plays a mushroom as a double-reeded instrument. He calls it the “Black Trumpet”. Do you think that this instrument has a future in popular music? -via io9 |
The DC Universe Gets A Major Overhaul Posted: 20 Aug 2011 02:32 PM PDT You may have heard the term “the New 52″ thrown around recently and thought to yourself “the new 52 of what?” Well, your days of wondering are over, cause their coming your way this September! “The New 52″ is DC Comics unprecedented overhaul and relaunch of 52 of their most popular, and world renowned, comic book series. From Superman and Action Comics to Batman and Detective Comics, to obscure titles like Swamp Thing and Creeper, every title is starting over, and they have never looked better! Check out the DC Comics website to learn all about how your favorite costumed crimefighters are going back to square one with style. Link -via ComicsAlliance |
Posted: 20 Aug 2011 02:29 PM PDT Jenny Parks, a scientific illustrator, imagined the eleven Doctors from Doctor Who as cats. The above cat is, of course, the Fourth Doctor, who was portrayed by Tom Baker. Link -via Fanboy | Facebook Page | Artist’s Website | Image: Jenny Parks, posted with permission |
Brent Spiner's Patrick Stewart Impression Posted: 20 Aug 2011 12:15 PM PDT (Video Link) Brent Spiner, the actor who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation, does a really good impersonation of Patrick Stewart, the actor who played Jean-Luc Picard. In fact, it was good enough to fool Stewart’s wife on the phone — at least for a while. Here’s a video of Spiner demonstrating this talent at the 2011 Emerald City Comicon. -via reddit |
Disney Princesses as Vogue Cover Models Posted: 20 Aug 2011 09:18 AM PDT Dante Tyler's mock-up Vogue covers featuring Disney Princesses as glamazonian models is at first funny (“Thingamabobs? She’s got 20″), then a bit unsettling. With Pocahontas as a fierce Beyonce look-alike and Belle staring smoky-eyed from behind her top five novel recommendations, you have to wonder how far removed the marketing plans for Vogue and Disney really are from one another. Posted: 20 Aug 2011 09:16 AM PDT Click and rotate the cells to line up the curvy red and blue lines. That’s all. You can see how difficult this puzzle is before you even start -but once you start, it’s hard to stop! Link -via mental_floss |
Ulric Collette's Genetic Portraits Posted: 20 Aug 2011 09:03 AM PDT Here’s an interesting project. Quebecois artist Ulric Collette (shown above, with his cousin Justine) explores the facial similarity of relatives by mashing their faces together into one portrait. The Genetic Portraits series was featured in My Modern Met, who snagged an interview with Collette. There are a lot of great results–some look like a normal person (when the relatives are close in appearance) and some can be kind of crazy. Link -via Laughing Squid |
Posted: 20 Aug 2011 08:41 AM PDT Tokyo artists Sagaki Keita creates fine art from hundreds of tiny drawings, like this rendition of the “Great Wave off Kanagawa.” The smaller drawings are sometimes silly or sinister, but each is balanced perfectly in light and dark to create the overall image. Keita doesn’t only reproduce famous works, though his Mona Lisa is spot-on–he has a full gallery of original works all created in the same manner. Link – via WebUrbanist |

Posted: 20 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT The back-to-school rush is on! If the schools in your area haven’t started already, they will soon. Stores are busy with parents shopping for new clothing and supplies for their students. Among all the required items, you might want to give your kids something special and different to encourage their efforts and let them know how much you care, so check out the featured back to school stuff in the NeatoShop! And even if you don’t have kids, you’ll want to catch up on all the things you might have missed this week at Neatorama. Jill Harness wrote about The Spicy History of Your Favorite Spices. John Farrier gave us 11 Facts You Might Not Know about Kung Fu. Eddie Deezen told us the story of The Strangest At-Bat in History, 60 years to the day after it happened. Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader filled us in on the making of the movie Plan 9 From Outer Space in the article I Remember Ed Wood. The Cingulate Cortex Does Everything came from The Annals of Improbable Research. From mental_floss magazine, we learned about Peter Deunov: How One Man Saved Bulgaria’s Jews. At NeatoBambino, we often post videos of cute kids. Last weekend, one featured the son of our social media guru David Israel, in Geek Toddler Reviews iCade for the iPad. We teamed up with Geeks Are Sexy to bring you the latest edition of the Tokyoflash Treasure Hunt. Congratulations to the winners, posted here. In this week’s What Is It? game, the object pictured is indeed a fireman's sand bucket, with a round bottom to keep anyone from using it for anything else. The earliest correct answer came from Bill, but due to a technical glitch on my part, it was not posted. The first correct answer posted came from Berhard, so we are awarding t-shirts to both of them. There were a lot of wonderfully funny answers! A t-shirt goes to Edward for the suggestion that this is Pa Kettle's bowling bag. Want more? Be sure to check our Facebook page every day for extra content, contests, discussions, videos, and links you won’t find here. Also, our Twitter feed will keep you updated on what’s going around the web in real time. Thanks for spending time with us at Neatorama! |
