Match The Mugshot With The Crime Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:24 PM PDT The Smoking Gun has a great game in the “Time Waster” section of their site where you can match mug shots of alleged criminals with the crime they were arrested for. If you like it, there are plenty more mugshot quizzes, including matching with the item they allegedly stole and the arrestee’s reported occupation. The games are both fun and addictive, making them definitely fall into the category of time wasters. |
15 Animals That Look Photoshopped Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:09 PM PDT I don’t know about you guys, but I didn’t know this cute little rhino mouse even existed. The poor little guy and the other rhino mice of the world are all suffering from glandular problems, and skin and nail disorders -even so, they’re simply precious. He’s one of Cracked’s list of 15 Animals You Won’t Believe Aren’t Photoshopped. Link Image Via KimCarpenter NJ [Flickr] |
16 Things You Shouldn't Microwave Posted: 21 Aug 2011 09:52 PM PDT I always knew you shouldn’t put light bulbs in the microwave, but I had no idea that it would look so cool if you did. If you want to see more weird things you shouldn’t put in a microwave (and the strange results), this BuzzFeed article is a good place to start. |
Handling Relationship Problems-Fallout Edition Posted: 21 Aug 2011 05:30 PM PDT If life decisions came with multiple choices, displayed via HUD and featuring options running the gamut of morality, we would probably still make terrible decisions. But hey, at least we’d know what our options were, and how effective our speech skill has become. While you’re at YouTube, check out Broken Pixel’s other silly comedy videos, and see what your favorite games would look like if they became all too real. -via Destructoid |
Aaron Jasinski's Colorful Imagination Posted: 21 Aug 2011 05:06 PM PDT Obi Wan battling the Empire via breakdancing. The classic Nintendo crowd get together for a snapshot. Mulder and Scully expose alien life forms both humanoid and puppet. Sound like strange subject matter for paintings? Then you haven’t seen the colorful works of Aaron Jasinski, a painter who’s bringing the pop culture back to lowbrow art. ComicsAlliance has a cool gallery of Aaron’s colorful works, ranging from pop culture celebration to semi-traditional portraiture, and his choice of color is every bit as cool as his subject matter. You can see more of Aaron’s work at his Deviant Art page below. Posted: 21 Aug 2011 04:58 PM PDT Itsa Mario, as a cute and cuddly cube! No arms, no legs, no problem cause the only adventure this little guy is going on happens in the dreamworld. Sugarcubes handmade sells all kinds of cuddly cubic characters on Etsy, from Link to Harry Potter, and their adorability cannot be denied! However, Mario’s new cubic body may make it hard for him to slide down pipes… |
Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:15 PM PDT Jenn Hall, a pastry artist in Philadelphia, figured that if she could make a R2D2 cake, she could make a R2D2 helmet. She was so pleased with the results of her efforts that she wore it to bed after finishing. Visit the link to see how she made the helmet. Link -via The Mary Sue | Photo: Geekadelphia |
Perseus with the Head of Ronald McDonald Posted: 21 Aug 2011 03:04 PM PDT Italian artist Giuseppe Veneziano updated the Greek myth of Perseus and Medusa with this sculpture. It’s a bit harsh. I mean, Ronald McDonald never turned anyone into stone. Artist’s Website (some NSFW images) -via Kurositas | Photo by Flickr user mamasaurus rex used under Creative Commons license UPDATE: In the comments, Sylvian proposes that this sculpture is actually a take on Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath. I think he’s right. |
Certain Trained Dogs Can Smell Lung Cancer Posted: 21 Aug 2011 01:02 PM PDT Earlier this year, Japanese researchers announced that they had trained a dog to detect colon cancer by smelling the poop of cancer victims. Now, reseachers at Schillerhoehe Hospital in Germany have discovered that trained dogs can detect lung cancer by sniffing the breath of sick patients:

A Rolling Beetle Gathers No Moss Posted: 21 Aug 2011 12:49 PM PDT Paul McGee spotted this Volkswagen Beetle at the Belladrum Festival, an annual music fair held in Scotland. On the atmosphere of the event, McGee wrote “Brilliant small festival for families though, I’d heartily recommend it.” Link -via Colossal | Photo: Paul McGee |
Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:56 AM PDT You may have heard of Pronunciation Book, a YouTube channel in which English words and names are pronounced for the purpose of helping non-English speakers. Videos have been added steadily for over a year. Pronunciation Manual, on the other hand, is a channel with ridiculously incorrect pronunciations that look just like the videos from Pronunciation Book. Woe to the English student who gets the two sources mixed up! Link -via Laughing Squid |
Monocopter Flies Like a Maple Seed Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:27 AM PDT The Samarai Monocopter, developed by Lockheed Martin, is only ten inches long. But the designers don’t plan to scale it up, but down. Their goal is to make one the size of a fingernail with a camera attached. Soldiers would be able to use such a device to scout nearby areas without exposing themselves to hostile fire. At the link, you can watch a video of the Monocopter in flight. Andrew Lancaster's Freakish Works of Taxidermy Posted: 21 Aug 2011 10:12 AM PDT Taxidermist Andrew Lancaster says “Some people call me sick and some think it's pretty good.” The New Zealand resident collects small dead animals, preserves them, and uses their body parts to form imaginary creatures. So just in case you were worried: the above animal doesn’t actually exist. News Story and Facebook Page -via Dave Barry | Photo: Andrew Lancaster |

I've got a feeling that it probably took Carla Ikeda of Dentro Do Forno (previously on Neatorama) more than a hard's day night to create The Beatles' Yellow Submarine cake. (And how could one cut into such a cake? I'd just let it be ...) So money can't buy you love, but it sure can buy an awesome cake (and of course, some cool Yellow Submarine stuff over at the NeatoShop) |

Twenty years ago, Brazil found itself in the grips of hyperinflation. Its inflation rate hit 80% a month, and the country was in financial free fall. Economists at the Catholic University in Rio came up with an unlikely - but ultimately successful - plan to rescue the country. And would you believe it, the plan calls for fake money: Read the fascinating story over at NPR's Planet Money blog: Link - via Just Urbanism |

Living in a big city sure is convenient and exciting, but it often lacks that one thing: a back yard. So what to do when you live in an apartment (in Manhattan) without a backyard? Rent one for $50 an hour. Add-on amenities include popsicles, trampoline, slip 'n' slide, BBQ, play pool, garden hose ... and even a girl in a white tee to spray with the hose ... this is, after all, a trendy Manhattan scene ;) Here's Timeshare Backyard by The Participation Agency: Link |

How the Beatles Revolutionized Animation Posted: 21 Aug 2011 08:58 AM PDT A person would be hard-pressed to argue that the Beatles didn’t revolutionize music; even the youngest of today’s kids has heard a song by or inspired by the band. (My six-year-old, for her part, is a fan of the movie Across the Universe and her Kindergarten class performed “Yellow Submarine” at last year’s graduation.) But people may not realize that John, Paul, George and Ringo also had a part in bringing animation to the foreground of innovation with the making of their feature-length film, Yellow Submarine.
It’s worth watching even if you’re not a Beatles fan for the history and great one-offs from the narrator, who calls Yellow Submarine “a sort of open-end Rorschach filled with Joycean puns.” Check out the documentary on Brain Pickings. Link |

The Silliest Military Uniforms Ever Posted: 21 Aug 2011 08:17 AM PDT Danger Room has photographs of what many of us would call costumes, but are actually regulation military or semi-military uniforms of various units from around the world. Pictured are Korean Honor Guards.
You might also notice how the US Army’s technical innovations make soldiers of the future look more and more like characters from a video game. Although the word “silly” is certainly in the eye of the beholder (but really, peacock feathers?) most of these would qualify. Personally, I think the Italian police uniforms are sharp.
