Beacon Sound
Your new source for underground spins
1465 D NE Prescott; Northeast

People who love vinyl are driven fiends who're always looking to make their record collection deeper, except for Lindsay Lohan, who seems pretty content with just her Police ones. Hooking you up with more power trios than even she's seen: Beacon Sound.

Located in the only cool strip mall ever, Beacon stands as a…um…beacon to NE Portland record collectors with a comfy rec-room hangout loaded with bins hand-built from reclaimed wood, plus two listening stations to sample new and used vinyl focused on indie rock and electronica, all curated by a couple of DJ pals, so it's nice to know that Michael Fishman still has friends since Roseanne was canceled. On the fresh side, Beacon has a distinct underground focus thanks to rock like the '80s-ish bedroom recordings of Georgia's Washed Out, and chillwave hip-hop from Brit producer Bullion, while also being the only West Coast distributor of European experimental electronic label Ghost Box, which you should avoid unless you've eaten a power pellet. On the used side they slice through far more genres, including everything from a oddly massive selection of Howard Jones 45s, to deep jazz wax from Mingus and Coltrane, to super-rare/ expensive LPs like Ann Steel, the words 50 Cent uses to fill in the two blanks after "Rob" a group of Italian classical composers who decided to make a pop record with an Italian model.

Nobly angling to be more than just a place that refuses to sell Dan Fogelberg records, Beacon plans on setting up DJ workshops and community lectures, and's also thinking about selling hand-built synths to go with a friend's selection of custom-made guitars, the only things with g-strings more visible than Lohan's.

Swing by their Facebook page to get the dope on the newest stax of wax they're bringing into the store
