DOJ Declines Republican Lawmakers' Request for Briefing on AT&T/T-Mobile Deal

The U.S. Justice Department has refused the request of lawmakers to clarify its rationale in suing AT&T (News - Alert) to block the carrier's $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile (News - Alert), noting that it is prohibited from disclosing nonpublic information during an ongoing lawsuit.


House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and other top Republicans recently requested a briefing on the DOJ's decision to challenge the acquisition in court.

Upton and fellow Representatives Greg Walden (R-Ore.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder – as well as FCC chairman Julius Genachowski (News - Alert) – inquiring whether the DOJ took into account the full ramifications of blocking the merger, particularly the negative effects it will have on job creation and economic growth.
