Night of the Living Ales
A Halloween party for beer geeks that doesn't bite...unless you ask nice
Sat, Oct 29th at Burnside Brewing Co.: 701 E. Burnside; Eastside
Well aware that Halloween is about more than just sexy Paul Allen costumes and egging people who give you Almond Joys, Night of the Living Ales began last year as a wild costumed pub crawl, but's undergone a Lon Chaney-ish transformation into a full-on beer fest at Burnside Brewing's warehouse, now full of outrageous/rare seasonals, aural pleasure from top local bands, and an eyeful of skin and fire from lovely lasses. What you'll get from these monsters of mash:
The beers: A slate of killer (maybe literally, since it's Halloween, and spoooooky) new brews include WTF awesomeness like Burnside's traditional German altbier infused with actual peanut butter cups, Fort George's new take on fruitcake that's aged over hand-splintered, "rum-inspired" oak, and Oakshire's Big Black Jack with roasted pumpkin seeds, baking spices, and ginger, all creating a "burly Imperial Porter", since you know Darth Vader has a ton of baggage.
The Entertainment: While you're getting the standard Halloween party trappings (Fake webs! Costume contest!), energetic folksy rockers The Ascetic Junkies'll play a set of spooky originals and Halloween-y covers, balanced by the hard danceable electro-pop of Boy Eats Drum Machine. But the real fun starts when they roll out a spooky Crocodile Mile! fire performers and live kinda-nude girls from Rose City Shimmy (including Hai Fleisch, who "hypnotizes audiences with her serpentine undulations"), and -- inspired by when last year's sexy-costume contest turned into a bar-/table-top dance-off -- an "amateur burlesque" with contestants who hopefully, like Mounds, do not have nuts.
