Savage Street Cuisine
A periodic pop-up at the Volunteer Cafe
At Volunteer Park Cafe: 1501 17th Ave E; Capitol Hill

Testing the waters while you're still in a relationship is tricky, so Bill Paxton recommends just marrying all the other ones too, because then nothing bad can ever happen, ever. From two Rover's chefs treating Monday like sister wives, Savage Street Cuisine.

Conceived as a way to test the food they hope to one day serve in their own truck (and one day...the moon!/a brick & mortar), the dudes behind SSC are using a few of their days off from the Madison Valley Frenchtaurant to take over Volunteer Park Cafe, where they'll be serving up traditional street-style eats in a series of themed dinners that so far include Southeast Asian, Latin America, and the "Dirty South", a phrase that, thanks to Cam Newton, is typically followed by "eastern Athletic Conference". The aforementioned Southeast Asian affair kicks things off with passed snacks (Chicken Satay, Fish Cakes); mains like Singapore-style Poached Chicken, traditional slow-cooked Beef Rendang, and Green Chili Vegetable Curry w/ fatty Coconut Rice; and dessert, which means toasted coconut/mint/marinated fruit Rice Pudding, something so good, it's no longer just for Jerry-atrics. Future dinners will range from a pork-heavy lineup of Deep South eats (Hush Puppies, Collard Greens) utilizing parts of a whole pig, to Feliz Navidad-inspired comida like tamales, empanadas, and possibly even Menudo, which is a traditional Mexican dish with a red chili base and teenage Ricky Martin on vocals.

They've also got plans for an African-inspired menu centered around Moroccan dishes, and are working on additional dinner, but if you want to get in on any of the deliciousness, you better get a reservation 'cause space is limited to around 35, at which point even Billy Pax is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

These guys are going every Monday, so hit the website for a schedule and tonight's full menu
