 | | | | | | | | | A. LISTER Mayer Hawthorne's Detroit Why? Because he's out there defending the Motor City.
What is an A. Lister? It's a man who knows his town and who knows what he likes. That's why, from time to time, we like to connect our readers with other guys making waves around Detroit and see where they're dining, drinking and doing their thing. What can we say? We're the sharing sort. We all know that Detroit's a music town, and we all know that Detroit is -- more specifically - a soul town. It's where singer, producer, DJ, rapper, "phenomenal food eater," and multi-instrumentalist Mayer Hawthorne (whose new album, called "How Do You Do," just dropped a while back) developed his unique swag, and it's also where he picked up his refusal to let anyone mess with his city (for more on that, check out his "Hawthorne Halftime," produced in his parents' place after he was aghast to see Nickelback half-timing his precious Lions). Detroit is a lot of things, but we like to think passionate is near the top of that list. As such, read on for Mayer Hawthorne's Detroit. | | | | | | | MAYER HAWTHORNE'S FAVORITE NIGHT-OFF JOINT Woodbridge Pub Why? Because it's not always a mixology night.
In His Words: "You mean besides Players' strip club? Woodbridge Pub on Warren -- in the old, war-torn Woodbridge neighborhood -- is always a good spot. Low maintenace, cheap drinks and great music. Just don't park under the busted street light. " | | | | | MAYER HAWTHORNE'S FAVORITE DETROIT INSTITUTION Lafayette Coney Island Why? Because it's our own little siren song.
In His Words: "That’s an easy one: Lafayette Coney Island -- my favorite place to eat in the world. Steamy, dreamy, Detroit style chili hot dogs; gimme two up and a chili-cheese fry. Hallelujah, holla back." | | | ADDRESS: | 118 W. Lafayette Blvd. | | PHONE: | 313-964-8198 | | | | | | | | | MAYER HAWTHORNE'S FAVORITE UNDER-THE-RADAR SPOT Cafe D'Mongo's Speakeasy Why? Because this is the real Detroit. In His Words: "Cafe D'Mongo’s Speakeasy, downtown on Griswold -- I shot the artwork for my first album there. It's open one night a week: Friday. Dope music and drinks and the decor hasn’t changed in 50 years. If you’re lucky, Mongo will be there himself, and you can buy him a shot for being so damn cool.
