NASA's Curiosity Mars Probes Lifts off for Long Voyage


While NASA may not be sending anyone to the moon anytime soon, that doesn't mean that the United States space agency doesn't have other work to do. On Saturday, November 23rd, the Curiosity Mars Rover was launched into space, embarking on an eight and a half month journey to the Red Planet. While other rovers have been dispatched to Mars, the Curiosity is the biggest one yet, said to be about the size of a car.


The Curiosity has had weeks of build up until its eventual launch and at different times it seemed as though the device was never actually going to get into space. While the probe was originally supposed to have launched earlier, a faulty battery meant that the agency had to delay until they finally had lift off this past weekend. The drama that surrounded the Curiosity's mission seemed to hearken back to the days of the cold war as Russia and the United States were briefly locked in a bit of a space race, to see which country could get their Mars probe launched first. Russia's probe, the Phobos, has had one setback after another and finally it was clear that the Curiosity would win the day...
