ping

A utility to determine whether a specific IP address is accessible. It works by sending a packet to the specified address and waiting for a reply. PING is used primarily to troubleshoot Internet connections. There are many freeware and shareware Ping utilities available for personal computers.

It is often believed that "Ping" is an abbreviation for Packet Internet Groper, but Ping's author has stated that the names comes from the sound that a sonar makes.

Analyst Paper - Storage Strategies Now

Sponsored by IBM
For many organizations the growth in the volume of data is greater than their ability to effectively and efficiently manage and store it. Most current solutions for reducing storage capacity requirements focus on compressing and deduplicating secondary backup data and static archives only before or after it is stored on NAS devices. This analyst paper, commissioned by IBM in 2011 with StorageStrategies Group NOW, looks at the importance of reducing primary storage with IBM Real-time Compression and how it helped customers contain the data growth in their businesses.
