Airways Beer & Bistro
The sweet South County brewer opens its own spot
Open Tues - Fri: 320 W Harrison; Kent
If you make a product that's not widely available, A) it's going to be harder to turn a profit, and B) you should know now that Val Kilmer and Louie Anderson and 2009 Kirstie Alley will be unable to fit into it. From a brewery taking the wider availability of its suds into their own hands, Airways Beer & Bistro.
Not even two years old, this South County brewery is already beloved by suds drinkers due to its limited production and general level of sweetness, and is now adding to the dozen area bars where you can find it with this utilitarian 35-seat bistro in Old Town Kent, someplace about which most people understandably ask (Sho)Ware? They're serving at least six of their air travel-themed brews, including the English-style Jet City ESB w/ a touch of crystal malt for sweetness; the incredibly bitter 7.8% ABV Sky Hag IPA (which also comes in a bourbon barrel-aged version called Uber Hag); and the more mellow First Class IPA made with both Galena and Columbus hops, the latter of which, with apologies to Christopher, occurred between islands in the Caribbean. And because it ain't no fun if your homies can't also showcase their beers, AB&B's pouring a rotating list of guest brews that currently includes Chuckanut Brewing's 2011 Festbier, Valhöll's Stouty Oatmeal Stout, and a pale from Two Beers called Persnickety.
Foodwise, they're sticking to the most important meals of the day: sandwiches (paninis like the Salami w/ roasted red peppers, basil & mozzarella) and pizza, including classics like the Margherita, and more creatively topped offerings like Black Forest Ham & Apple, also what you'd say if Gwyn Paltrow's kid was together with the love child of Kilmer and '09 Kirstie.
Clicking here on their menu ensures you won't have to hear another Kilmer/Alley fat joke for at least three days
