  • Facebook reportedly plans mobile-advertising push
Facebook plans a new push into mobile advertising early in 2012, sources say, with one option being to add Sponsored Stories to mobile users' News Feed. That could give brands considerable reach, with Facebook anticipating a significant expansion from its 350 million mobile users. Bloomberg (12/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Rival influence-rating services aim to clobber Klout
Klout's dominance of the online-influence-measurement business could be coming to an end, writes Erin Griffith. Rival ratings services such as Kred and PROskore are differentiating themselves by mining more social media data and incorporating other factors such as users' education and employment history into their calculations. "The nascent influence measurement industry is already awash in tools to transform amateur social media stars into branding machines," Griffith writes. Adults are invited to send in tweeted requests for tailored YouTube messages to the good boys and girls in their lives. "We felt that we should create something fun as an integrated aspect of our Christmas digital campaigning," said Alex Pearmain, head of social media at O2. Research and Reports

  • Are young people cooling on Facebook?
Young Americans reportedly are quitting Facebook amid concerns over privacy and information overload. Growth in the number of visits was 56% for November 2009 through October 2010; from November 2010 to October 2011, it was 10%, perhaps suggesting the network is struggling to retain its novelty appeal. "That's a continual problem that they're solving, and there are no permanent solutions," said Gartner analyst Ray Valdes. • Facebook dominates social sharing, study finds
Facebook accounts for about half of all social sharing, according to a study from AddThis. The social network's users were responsible for 52.1% of all online sharing this year, an increase from 44% last year and 33% in 2009. ClickZ (12/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Dell is still worth watching for social tips
It's become a cliche to praise Dell's social media efforts, writes Jason Falls, but there's plenty that marketers can learn from the tech giant. The company has continued to innovate its social-sales and monitoring programs, and remains a master at using social buzz to fuel its business, while integrating social principles into company culture. "Chances are you're not yet doing what they are. So you've probably got something to learn," Falls writes. Social Media Explorer (12/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Blog failures point the way to better practices
Common mistakes born of a lack of original ideas and the need to fill space on a given day can easily bog down a blog, writes Andrew Hanelly, reflecting on recent mistakes. Among the lessons he recalls learning this year are the fact that rants seldom draw the kind of readership you want, that true passion is essential for engaging content and that curation of others' worthy work can be useful if you add value in the process. • Feds will mostly stop minting unwanted $1 coins
The U.S. government says it will largely stop minting dollar coins after it emerged this year that $1.4 billion in unwanted coins were awaiting distribution. The stockpile was caused by a 2005 law ordering the minting of coins honoring each U.S. president. "As will shock you all, the call for Chester A. Arthur coins is not there. I don't mean to comment on his presidency, but it just is not very high," Vice President Joe Biden said in halting the program. The Mint had not yet finished the presidential coins program, so it will continue to print a small number of coins honoring the remaining presidents for collectors.
