Billy Boy Blue Studio's Vintage Denver Photos
Classy signs for dens of ill repute
Whether it's a subconscious reaction to the objections of the neighbors, or because their patrons all have tiny, beady eyes, vice-supporting businesses always seem to have the biggest and best signs. Celebrate them, with photos from Billy Boy Blue Studio.
The side project of an interior designer who Mile Highed it after scoring a gig at IKEA's Centennial store (meaning dude is loaded and clearly just does this for fun), Billy Boy's buyable photo-log chronicles some of Colorado's vintage-iest motel, liquor store, and bar signs, like:
Lucky U Motel: This Englewood flop-stop sign has been Photoshopped to accentuate the clarity and lighting, and, like Pleasantville, is available in B&W and color.
Red Pine Motel: This mid-century Platt Park check-in is located across the street from famed music venue Herman's Hideaway, aka what Cain nicknamed like, 20 or 30 other motels.
Manhattan Bar: Taken while he was driving through Leadville, this print looks somehow both washed out and brand-new, with a marquee-like sign topped with olives and stuck on the roof, which is one way to get it dirty.
Liquors: From an unknown Lakeside store, this design looks like a giant Words with Friends board, and conveniently features a red arrow pointing to the business below it -- and once that beady-eyed vagrant below it moves on, a liquor store.
