MIT’s new online initiative, called MITx, will allow virtual students taking courses online to use simulated labs, interact with professors and communicate with each other. In addition, at the completion of the program satisfactorily, they can also earn certificates, said MIT. MIT’s popular OpenCourseWare program offers some 2,100 courses online for free. And some 100 million students from around the world have benefited from this program, said MIT. While this learning platform is expected to enhance the educational experience of its on-campus students by offering online tools that supplement and enrich their classroom and laboratory experiences, MIT also expects that MITx will eventually host a virtual community of millions of learners around the world.MIT said that its online learning initiative is led by MIT Provost L.
