How The Daleks Saved Christmas

Posted: 24 Dec 2011 02:06 AM PST

While Christmas would certainly be a lot more simple with a Santa Dalek, I don’t know that I’d consider it “saving” the holiday when they’ve exterminated everyone.

7 Weird Christmas Traditions

Posted: 24 Dec 2011 02:02 AM PST

Did you know that Swedes love to watch Donald Duck on Christmas Eve or that Icelandic children are raised under the threat of a cruel Christmas cat? Mental Floss has a great article about Christmas traditions around the world, my favorite of which is the Gävle goat of Sweden:

In the Swedish town of Gävle, the goat became an effigy made of straw, built in the town square every year since 1966. At 13 meters tall, the Gävle Goat towers over the townspeople. The very first straw goat in 1966 was mysteriously set on fire at midnight on New Year's Eve. Since then, the goat has been erected every year, and burned by unknown individuals about half of those years. Locals take sides, with some protecting the goat with schemes like soaking it in water, while others plot its demise.

I don’t know about you guys, but I want to be on a goat protection or destruction team next year!

109 Cats Celebrating Christmas

Posted: 24 Dec 2011 01:55 AM PST

Cats get a bad rap for not getting in to the the holiday spirit, but plenty of felines do have a soft spot for the holiday. In fact, BuzzFeed has a great collection of pictures of kitties celebrating Christmas. From cats climbing Christmas trees to kittens playing with presents, the pictures are all simply adorable.

Dark Knight Rises Trailer, Sweded Edition

Everybody’s getting ready to see what the new Batman movie will be like, some are hoping it fails while others (myself included) pray that it’s as good as the first two or better.

The folks that made this sweded version of the Dark Knight Rises trailer obviously have love for the film franchise, but that doesn’t stop them from having a bit of fun with the whole Bane’s voice thing, as well as putting some sweet cornball animation into the mix! Behold, and be amused!

A Pair Of Impaled Snowmen

Here’s another snowman crime scene sure to make Calvin and Hobbes very happy. They’re impaled on the Ellifrett Structure at the University of Wyoming, and I can’t think of a more festive way to greet the students during the holidays, aside from staging a Santa Claus crash scene on the football field!

The Lego Dalek

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 04:49 PM PST

The Addis family loves Legos…a lot. As in, this 100,000 brick Santa Dalek isn’t their only massive Christmas creation. Every year they make an equally impressive creation ranging from giant nutcrackers to mail boxes to angels. This year’s Dalek is certainly my personal favorite, but the rest are definitely worth a look.

I’m not sure how many No Reservations fans we have here at Neatorama, but if you caught Bordain’s Christmas special, you’ll not that this animation was lacking from the final cut. That’s because executives found it a bit too creepy. Personally, I found the Samantha Brown scene to be far, far more terrifying than this animation, but she gives me the creeps anyway.

What People Wanted For Christmas In 1975

And they even included the grown folks in this gallery of fashion regret, so take a gander and see what people put on their lists over 35 years ago. Pant sets FTW!

Inside the American Girl Doll Company

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 02:12 PM PST

Thanks to my beautiful little girl, me and my wallet are very familiar with the American Girl doll company. (If you're not familiar with it, thank your lucky stars - an American Girl doll, made to look just like your girl, and its clothes and accoutrements can easily cost upwards of a hundred dollars).

Christopher Borrelli of the Chicago Tribune went deep inside the company to find out what made it tick. Here's his report touring the American Girl distribution center in Wisconsin:

And after you buy American Girl through an American Girl catalog or website, your package likely will be shipped from one of its two distribution centers in Wisconsin. The largest is in DeForest, 40 minutes north of Middleton. I find it in the back of another drab office park, dark and enormous against the rainy afternoon. The place is vast, 400,000 square feet. Inside, holiday decorations are at a minimum, though the majority of employees — 780 of the total 870 — are seasonal. A young-looking guy in army-green cargo pants, Dave Brophy, director of the center, greets me. He's been with the company for 25 years. "We're at the point in the season where people are panicking. Everyone wants wrapping," he says.

The workers in this building shipped 60,000 packages the day before. And yet, as in Middleton, it's not a chaotic place. The gift-wrapping area holds 41 booths. Elves here are hunched over boxes in shifts from 6 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.

In-Flight Conversation Between the Two Crying Babies That Sat Behind You

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 12:09 PM PST

Flying home for the holidays? Did you, perchance, sit near two bawling, crying babies? Well, comedian Simon Rich did. And he recorded the in-flight "conversation" between the infants for all of your (quiet) reading enjoyment:

-Wow, that was some nap.

-Tell me about it. It's almost like I was drugged or something. Hey ... what is this place?

-I'll look out the window. ... Oh my God. I think we have a situation.

-What is it? Are we at the doctor's office?

-No. We're in the sky.

-What?

-We're just, like, flying through the sky.

-Do Mom and Dad know?

-Clearly not. They're just reading like everything's normal. (Looking around) Everybody's reading.

-How do we warn them?

-With screams.

-Which kind? Soft and whiny or piercing and crazy?

-Let's go with piercing and crazy.

Did Neanderthals Have High-Pitched, Nasal Voices?

What did Neanderthals sound like when they spoke? Apparently like Monty Python actor Terry Jones whenever he plays a female role. According to anthropologist Bob Franciscus, Neanderthals had, compared to modern humans, narrow vocal tracts, larger nasal cavities, and deeper chests. This video shows a man trying to simulate what they might have sounded like.

Man Orders Beer, Robs Bank, Returns to Bar to Finish Beer

Do you remember that coworker who was always on break? He’s now turned to crime:

Authorities say a Tampa Bay area man ordered a beer at a bar, left to rob a nearby bank then came back to finish his beer. [...]

A bartender there said Whittle ordered a beer, disappeared for about 30 minutes and then returned to his beer. Deputies say they arrested at the bar about 10 minutes after he left the bank.

15 of the Greatest Gifts in the History of Presents

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 06:44 AM PST

Every once in a while, you think you’ve found the most perfect gift ever. But does it compare to the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States? Mental_floss has a roundup of the biggest, costliest, and most thoughtful gifts ever given. For example, General Sherman notified his boss of an impressive Christmas gift he worked hard to obtain in 1864.

General William T. Sherman had been working his troops hard to secure ports from the Confederate Army during the Civil War. After he captured Atlanta in September 1864, Sherman and some of his men disappeared for about six weeks; the White House received no communication from them and President Lincoln feared the worst. Then, on December 22, Sherman sent Lincoln a telegraph with the message: "I beg to present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition, and also about 25,000 bales of cotton."
