| Posted: 25 Dec 2011 01:56 AM PST If you’re getting sick of all the Christmas posts today, perhaps this will be a refreshing change of pace. Here is a great collection of adorable critters wearing yarmulkes. Of course, if you’re tired of holiday posts in general, well, this won’t help you much. |
| Crocheted Krampus Doll To Keep Kids In Line Posted: 25 Dec 2011 01:50 AM PST Yesterday, I posted Anthony Bordain’s great Krampus Carol and now for those of you who want a terrifying reminder of the evil Christmas character inside your own home, you can always look to this great doll from Shove Mink of Croshame. While the link doesn’t have any directions to make your own, the pictures can still provide you with a good starting point if you’re already a skilled crocheter. Link Via Laughing Squid |
| Why They Don't Update Christmas Specials Every Year Posted: 25 Dec 2011 01:45 AM PST If you love Christmas animations, but start to feel like they’re a little too old and cliched, here’s the real reason why intrepid animators never update them to fit in with modern times. | Posted: 25 Dec 2011 01:38 AM PST If you’re one of the many people who has become obsessed with Skyrim, but your wife keeps insisting that you put up the Christmas lights, what do you do? Why make Skyrim-themed lights of course! Via BuzzFeed |
| Posted: 25 Dec 2011 01:02 AM PST In honor of all of the great action movies that take place on Christmas, 39 Degrees brings you Gundog, the greatest action movie animal of all time. Via BuzzFeed |
| Mammalian Cells Christmas Wreath Posted: 25 Dec 2011 12:35 AM PST
What better way to say Merry Christmas than with this fantastic wreath made from collage images of mammalian cells by biologist Donna Beer Stolz (what wonderful middle name!) of University of Pittsburgh? She won 19th place at the 2011 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. | Posted: 24 Dec 2011 06:25 PM PST Will Santa be confused by where to put the presents? No. Kudos to the brilliant but so far unknown crafter responsible for this Christmas tree. -via Super Punch |
| Batgirl and Supergirl Fight Crime on Christmas Posted: 24 Dec 2011 04:39 PM PST
Mike Maihack of Cow Shell Graphics drew this fabulous Christmas comic featuring Batgirl and Supergirl's plan to bring holiday festivities to crime fighting. Love the pom-poms on Batgirls' ears! Link - via Nerd Approved |
| Posted: 24 Dec 2011 03:35 PM PST Flickr user Lady Oracle calls this “The most rockin’ fence in E-Town.” That’s Edmonton, Canada, I think. And this house is roomier than the house with the ukulele fence. Link -via Offbeat Home |
| Outbreak of The Mysterious Nodding Syndrome in Africa Posted: 24 Dec 2011 02:37 PM PST
According to Wikipedia, it's not as funny as it sounds: the disease also causes mental retardation, stunted growth, and a near 100% fatality rate. |
| This GIF Reveals Santa's Secret Power Posted: 24 Dec 2011 01:46 PM PST So that’s how the big guy in the red suit delivers all those toys in one night! I wonder if he happens to be friends with a Time Lord, and what other tricks does he have up his sleeve, say for those on his naughty list? The world may never know… |
| Strange Vintage Photos Of Children With Hidden Mothers Posted: 24 Dec 2011 01:41 PM PST The old timey photos in this series all have one eerie quality in common-the mother’s identity has been concealed. Whether with shroud, or by simply scraping the face away, erasing their identity seems like an odd thing to do when they’re posed for a picture with their children. Maybe they were having a bad hair day, or woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but isn’t wearing a shroud over your head at a photo shoot an extreme reaction to not looking your best? If anybody has any insight into this strange trend in portraiture, please share! Otherwise, enjoy taking a look back at when people were really weird about having their picture taken. | Posted: 24 Dec 2011 01:40 PM PST Here’s a silly little animated short for all you Team Fortress fans out there, starring everyone’s favorite firebug Rudolph! Watch as he tries to burn the competition, and sing along as he is admonished for being such a useless class! Merry multiplayer mayhem to all, and to all a good fight! –via Ology |
| Fantastic Photo Series Plays With Our Sense Of Scale Posted: 24 Dec 2011 01:15 PM PST Taking a cue from such classics as Alice In Wonderland and Jack and the Beanstalk, photographer Jean-Francois Fortou places normal sized people in giant or tiny sets to create a sense of wonder and dimensional irregularity. The photos are simple and digitally untouched, and their simplicity is the key to making the whole concept work, I mean, how easy would it be to use Photoshop to simply shrink the subjects? But that wouldn’t look as cool as setting a normal sized man inside a tiny dollhouse then snapping away as he curls up in a ball, covered in tiny furniture, now would it? –image via Jean-Francois Fortou –via Flavorwire |
| Some Of The Worst Christmas Specials Ever Made Posted: 24 Dec 2011 12:42 PM PST Sometimes great ideas go terribly wrong, especially when it comes to Christmas specials. For some reason, people tend to drop the ball when writing these holiday specials, and the results are hilariously bad. While I disagree with the Rankin Bass specials being on this list, I will be the first to admit that they are a bit hokey by today’s standards, but I have a special place in my heart for all things stop motion so meh. The rest of the specials definitely belong on this list, and some of them are so bad they serve to dampen my Christmas spirit, like the Larry The Cable Guy travesty above. Watch them with good humor, and wonder just what they were thinking when they made these stinkers! –via ToplessRobot |

When life gets too crazy busy, stop and smell the daffodils, just like Pickles the fox, as photographed by Matt Binstead, who works at the British Wildlife Centre (probably the greatest job there is!): Link - via Krulwich Wonders |
| Transparent Mouth That Gobbles Prey on the Ocean Floor Posted: 24 Dec 2011 12:08 PM PST (Video Link) The predatory tunicate Megalodicopia hians is, thankfully, only five inches across. But just wait until some ambitious young mad scientist gets a grant to enlarge it through genetic engineering! When that day comes, those who mocked Aquaman will regret it. -via io9 |

Hello, what have we here? Sean Kernick of Two Four Flinching blog created this homage to Billy Dee Williams with this 40 oz bottle of smooth smoothness: a handpainted Lando Calrissian on Colt 45. See that, Star Wars fans? Colt 45 works every time, just like Lando's little maneuver at the Battle of Taanab. Link - via Obvious Winner |

Gary Noarnan was kind enough to provide us a guest post explaining 8 Reasons why the Nine of Diamonds is Unlucky. In honor of the new movie, Jill Harness wrote The History of the Tintin Comics & Film. Eddie Deezen gave us It’s A Wonderful Life: The Christmas Flop. The Annals of Improbable Research brought us Snow-Clearing from SUV Roofs and from Fire Hydrants: An Informal Look. Mental_floss magazine filled us in on the first Christmas in Space! The Evolution of Santa Claus came to us from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. The most-commented (non-contest) item of the week was Mysterious Sphere Falls From Space. The story lent itself to at least three jokes: the Mythbusters cannonball, the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, and pretending that this was the What Is It? game. Speaking of… In this week’s What Is It? game, the mystery object is a A Yankee Cork Press, for compressing corks to the proper size to fit into a bottle. Just a Guess? had the right answer before anyone else, and so wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Kevin George had the funniest answer: "That's the famous scuplture "Desert Cowskull" by the steampunk impressionist Nemo Remington." That deserves a t-shirt, too! You can see the answers to all this week's mystery items at the What Is It? blog.
Oh, we have more contests! Congratulations to Thad Gillespie, who won a t-shirt from the NeatoShop in caption contest no 3 over on G+. Put Neatorama in your G+ circles to keep up with opportunities to win, and other neat stuff going on that you won’t find here at the main site! Want more? Be sure to check our Facebook page every day for extra content, contests, discussions, videos, and links you won’t find here. Also, our Twitter feed will keep you updated on what’s going around the web. And we have one more thing to say to you… MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM NEATORAMA! |
