Tell Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer: Stop Shooting Wolves

Center for Biological Diversity

Dear Center Supporter,

Gray WolvesSince Congress stripped wolves of protection under the Endangered Species Act earlier this year, Montana has been encouraging hunting to drastically reduce its wolf population.

To date, at least 120 wolves have been "harvested," but this is not enough for the state. Montana is extending its hunting season past the original Dec. 31 limit, through mid-February, to meet its ultimate target: 220 wolves dead. This would reduce the population to 425 wolves -- a 25 percent drop.

While the Center for Biological Diversity fights in court to return the wolves' federal protection, we need your help to contact Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer and ask him to suspend the hunt and let Montana's wolves live.

Take action today, before another wolf falls victim to this senseless slaughter

Sample letter:

Subject: Let Montana's wolves live

To Governor Brian D. Schweitzer:

Please use your authority to end Montana's wolf hunt immediately; do not extend it to mid-February.

Killing wolves breaks up their packs. This leaves younger, lone wolves less able to bring down natural prey, makes them vulnerable to starvation and forces them to resort to livestock predation -- which inevitably brings calls to kill more wolves.

When you leave office in 2013 and cast about for new challenges, please leave Montana's wolf population resilient and robust, not stagnant or declining.

Thank you.

Please take action by January 6, 2012.
