T.H.E. True Meaning of Food For Thought
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Robert Reports
The absolute dismantling of the integrity of our food supply - in every respect
from the farm to the shelf to our tables- is the single greatest contributor to
neurological disorders and poor health today. In fact, the contamination of our
food and personal care products with synthetic chemicals from pesticides, herbicides,
heavy metals, preservatives, food dyes, stabilizers, artificial flavorings, artificial
colorings, growth stimulants, hormones, tranquilizers, excess salt, unhealthy systems
of feeding and antibiotics may be the root cause of many neurological disorders.
[1]
To add fuel to the 'fire of poor nutrition', our production techniques have often
reduced the intrinsic nutritional value of raw food and the raw supplies for our
personal products with genetic engineering, irradiation, high-temperature processing,
and hydrogenation - and there are many more. Heat alone, usually used to simply
purify or cleanse food and raw material (more often then not, to kill the bugs
in our food), can strip our food of many - sometimes all of - the nutrition and
essential value of our food. Our bodies and brains are not designed to function
on nutritionally stripped, chemically laden food. Nor are we equipped to function
coming in repeated contact with the external products we so often use that have
been made with similarly toxic ingredients that enter our systems through our
skin and scalps. Feeling good and having the energy and vitality that we all want
and expect in our lives is directly tied to the quality and value in everything
we eat and put in contact with our bodies.[2]
This 'contamination' of our food and personal care supply contributes dramatically
to ill health. The brain, like no other part of the body, is more sensitive to
all of this, or really most susceptible to 'all of this' and therefore more likely
then not to be the first casualty of such dangerously poor quality food and personal
products that makes up most of our lives and the food that most of us eat every
day. And let's not misunderstand ourselves, when we recognize that, in terms of
our food, what we're talking about here is 'quality' in the food that we eat. Quality
is surely sometimes driven by a desire to achieve it and maintain it. But quality
is often produced in response to a demand for it. And surely there simply are unacceptable
ways to produce what we buy, let alone the products that we buy that we eat. The
willful and intentional 'contamination' of the food we eat in the initial raising,
farming, production and post-production in packaging and shipping of so much
of what we eat has and will continue to have, in ever-expanding proportions, a
dramatically destructive impact on our health and particularly our essential brain
functioning. Reduced brain function, in so many of its different forms, is the
net effect of unacceptable 'contamination' of our food and the essential resource
it is in the fuel and building material we need.[3]
Recognizing the various quality and values in our food, is essential to our feeling
well and having the lives that we all want, in addition to the simple importance
of the pleasure of eating. Lives full of energy, free of pain and discomfort, sleeping
well and feeling well rested - even when we've unavoidably not had long to sleep,
is a basic human desire common to us all. (Poor nutrition is actually the number
one cause of poor sleep.) Knowing the difference and learning what 'contamination'
of our food takes place prepares us to make more and more discerning choices in
what we eat and, more importantly, what we demand of those that make our food.
Demanding value, not just reasonable prices, but value as in 'return' for money
given, has already begun to have an impact on our food producers here in America
and around the world. But the real question of value in our food is much more basic
then making 'better' choices in what we eat. Although surely important, and hopefully
because of many of those choices, the natural demand that is put on our food producers
to make 'better' and better quality food for us is a steadily growing trend. But
the real issue of value in our food lies with how bad so much of our food really
is. What we eat, and more importantly what we accept from many of those that produce
what we eat, is so often completely devoid of any value at all. In fact, the opposite
is often true. A great deal of the food we eat is simply toxic. And, again, most
importantly, most of us don't know that. Most of us don't know that so much of
what we eat is really bad for us. This is a completely separate subject from the
kinds of food we like or the great taste we deservedly expect from our food. There
is a way to make anything we like to eat that isn't poisonous - anything - in a
way that we would love and say that's the best version of whatever we like to
eat. Food that's actually good for us. That actually has plenty of those naturally
occurring vitamins and nutrition and fiber and good oil and, and, and...that, well,
we really do expect - and should and have good reason to expect - from our food.
And again, that is completely separate from having too much of this, or too little
of that, or what we add to our food or how we can best prepare our food after we
get it from those that make it, like added salt or frying food. All of those choices
are important and necessary. Separate from all of that, let's all recognize that,
to make a bit more money, many of the ways our food is produced by many of those
that produce it at every level is done so at the expense of our health - often
dramatically. [4]
The nutritional and health effects of poor or nonexistent value in our food can
be seen in the rise of every manner of neurological disorder today. Epilepsy is
a good example. Epilepsy is becoming a very common, what's referred to as, a 'neurological
seizure disorder'. A seizure is an electrical surge that affects brain activity.
[3] Research has shown that there is a clear link between food additives and epilepsy.
MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a flavor enhancer most often associated with Chinese
food, but is also an ingredient in a large variety of processed foods. It, like
most of these food additives, is considered excitotoxins in the brain. Excitotoxins
over-stimulate the neurons of the brain and may cause damage and/or neuron cell
death. People who have neurological conditions such as epilepsy may have a lower
tolerance for MSG and other excitotoxins due to their underlying impairment. In
fact, these food additives may be one of the substances that trigger seizures.
[5]
Epileptics with severe seizure activity may choose to try to minimize their episodes
naturally by following a ketogenic diet, according to the Epilepsy Foundation of
America. This type of diet prompts your body to burn fat for energy instead of
glucose. Therefore, large amounts of fat are consumed daily, up to 80 percent of
overall caloric intake, and protein and carbohydrate consumption is limited. The
total number of calories consumed may also be restricted to help control seizures.
A ketogenic diet must be supervised very closely by a medical doctor. It may also
be recommended to supplement this diet with a multiple vitamin and a mineral supplement.
We recommend Rainbow Light Organics Multivitamins due to their whole food contents.
Furthermore, seizures are attributed to many causes, including metabolic abnormalities,
severe allergies, infections, head trauma and, most importantly, nutritional deficiencies.
Mineral deficiencies like calcium, magnesium, potassium and especially selenium
have been linked to seizures. In fact, there is a growing concern around the world
that as our soils are becoming more and more mineral-depleted, our soil in many
places may itself be directly implicated in the rise of neurological disorders.
[6] This is why we highly recommend one of the best multi-minerals from Jarrow
Formulas called Mineral Balance.
The vital importance of fats and brain function can be clearly seen by the function
of fats in the brain. Fatty acids (FA) are among the major components of our brain
structure. Very high levels of fatty acids and lipids can be found in two structural
components of our brain - the neuronal membrane and the myelin sheath. Myelin is
a form of insulation and protection used by the body for neuron communication.
About 50% of the neuronal membrane is composed of fatty acids, while in the myelin
sheath lipids constitute about 70%. Human and animal studies have shown that nutrition
has a big influence on myelination, the production of myelin sheath, especially
for nursing infants. French researchers found that dietary trans fatty acids,
bad fats found in processed foods, did indeed find their way into the myelin of
brain cells, where they changed the electrical conductivity of the cells. [7]
The consumption of trans fats and a deficiency of EFA's may be a link in the rise
of neurological disorders.
Most interestingly, fats are vital to many of our bodies' functions. The fats that
are good for us, known as Essential Fatty Acids, or EFA's, must be obtained from
food. They are considered essential as EFA's are critically important for the very
integrity and structure of all of our cells. [7] They are particularly essential
to the performance of various physiological functions in the body such as energy
and hormone production, proper brain and cardiac function, and in maintaining
healthy hair, skin and nails. Every cell in our body is surrounded by a cell membrane
composed primarily of fatty acids. The cell membrane allows proper amounts of necessary
nutrients to enter into the cell and ensures quick waste removal out of the cell.
In order for the cell membrane to perform theses functions optimally, the cell
membrane must maintain its fluidity and integrity. Cells without a healthy membrane
lose their ability to hold water and vital nutrients and lose their ability to
communicate with other cells. [8]
DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid), a component of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is the most
abundant fat in the brain. Loss of DHA concentrations in brain cell membranes correlates
to a decline in structural and functional integrity of this brain tissue. In fact,
DHA may also be required for proper neuron communication, as it relates to neurological
disorders. Ernst Schaefer, M.D., of the HumanNutritionResearchCenter on Aging at
TuftsUniversity, has found that a low level of DHA presents a significant risk
factor for dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. In addition, he discovered
that the body may experience a decreased ability to make DHA as it ages. Adam Drewnowski,
Ph.D., director of the Program in Human Nutrition at the University of Michigan,
further asserts that cognitive deficits and dementia in the elderly may be associated
with inadequate diets of fish. "Current studies on nutrition in the elderly suggest
that many conditions associated with aging, such as loss of appetite and forgetfulness,
may be avoided if optimal nutrition is maintained through a diet including nutrients
like DHA." [9] With this overwhelming evidence in mind we recommend the regular
consumption of fish and supplementation of Barlean's Ultra EPA/DHA for optimal
brain support.
As we highly recommend the healthy consumption of good fats for improved brain
function, one of the most beneficial EFA's is found in very small marine crustaceans
called krill. We recommend Jarrow Formulas Krill Oil for one of the most reputable
sources. Krill oil also contains astaxanthin, an extremely potent anti-oxidant.
The phospholipid structure of the EPA and DHA in krill oil makes them much more
absorbable and allows for a much easier incorporation into our cells. In addition
to EPA and DHA, krill oil contains a complex phospholipid profile including phosphatidylcholine,
a potent memory enhancer. This is potent brain food which can actually help improve
cognitive function and memory. Krill oil also contains vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin
D and canthaxanthin, which is like astaxanthin, a potent anti-oxidant. The anti-oxidant
potency of krill oil was found to be 48 times more potent than other types of fish
oil. [10]
'Food as Medicine' is clearly, "T.H.E. True Meaning of Food for Thought". And
as simply as we understand starvation, without realizing it, in many ways we are
starving with a full belly, seemingly satiated and satisfied, time and time again,
eating and dining on food that leaves us, literally, starving in the end. Our brains
and optimal neurological functioning, literally how well we can think and how well
we feel, is at the top of the list of what usually starves first. An understanding
of the importance of the integrity of our food, its potential intrinsic nutritional
value and content and how what we buy and eat may not be what it represents itself
to be can all be the beginning of a whole new clarity in our lives and a true prescription
for health and happiness.
