Apple Targets Educators Via iBooks 2, iBooks Author,
iTunes U App

Apple announced plans to shake up the sclerotic textbook
industry with new versions of iBooks and iTunes
University. Basically, it wants to replace textbooks with
the iPad and host a platform for providing multimedia
education titles to students. Best of all, users can
create their own books. It is really hard to see a
downside here for Apple, students, or schools. If I were
a textbook publisher, getting in on iBooks 2 seems like
a pre-requisite.

SOPA's Dark Day on the Internet

The battle over Internet piracy and the heavy-handed,
misguided attempts to curtail it, namely the Stop Online
Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), have
gone mainstream. At the moment, it seems hard to believe
either bill has a chance of passing, but as public as
these demonstrations are, it would be a mistake to think
the bills are dead.

Kodak Files for Bankruptcy, Targets Samsung in Patent
Lawsuit

Kodak has been struggling for years, but it seemed like
it was getting itself back on track. Its consumer digital
cameras were getting better and the Kodak PlaySport was
good enough to earn an Editors' Choice from PCMag.
Evidently, the margin on those products just wasn't
enough to offset all of their legacy businesses. Adario
Strange has the latest on the depressing developments
at Kodak.

Windows 8 Tablets: Making the OS Matter

We all know that iOS is running away with the tablet
market, but PCMag's Lead Laptop Analyst Eric Grevstad
thinks that Microsoft is going to be in the race by the
end of the year. Microsoft just released its requirements
for Windows 8 tablets and, while they are not exactly
revelatory, Eric thinks the devices will catch on. Let
him know if you agree in the comments section.

Post-Zappos Hack: 5 Ways to Protect Yourself Online

Last weekend, hackers broke into Zappos' servers and
exposed more than 24 million usernames and passwords.
The company had to ask all of its users to reset their
passwords, but the truth is criminals don't need your
username and password to hurt you, though it certainly
helps. Sara Yin at SecurityWatch has some tips on how to
protect yourself online, no matter where you choose to
buy your shoes.

The Freaky, Forgotten World of Abandoned Websites

There are a lot of dead websites out there. Even those of
us that are still active online are leaving a trail of
digital detritus. Dancosta.com, for example, is a little
dusty these days. I'll update this weekend. Maybe. PCMag's
Chandra Steele went a step beyond simple websites to find
the abandoned sites that are so dead they seem like ghosts.
Freaky, but not quite forgottenâ€"at least not yet.

How to Root the Kindle Fire

Amazon updated the Kindle Fire this week, which predictably
broke the roots of all previous versions. But don't worry,
if you want to play again, Geek.com has instructions to
re-root with version 6.2.2. Note, I'm not encouraging you
do this and it is a safe bet that Amazon would prefer you
didn't, but the root works.
