Megaupload Shutdown Targets Pirates, Hurts Legit Users

The Justice Department swooped in, indicted executives,
and shut down Megaupload. But what about the thousands
of innocent users who were just using the service for
legal file storage and sharing? PCMag's Managing Editor
for News, Chloe Albanesius, found out who they are. And
yes, they are pretty frustrated right now.

You Cloud Service is Dead, Where Are Your Files?

This is the worst case scenario for the booming cloud
storage industry, but at least two big questions were
answered: Could a large, cloud storage service go offline
instantly, permanently, and without warning (Yup.) and
would users lose all their stuff? ('Fraid so.)
ExtremeTech's Sebastian Anthony says, "I told you so."

Megaupload Impounded Items: 82-inch TVs, Sports Cars,
and a Predator Statue

Sounds like Megaupload executives were living like
modern-day, high-tech Tony Montanas: "Say hello to my
little file!" from the Maserati GranCabrio and a 56-inch
TVLogic 4K resolution LUM-560W. Thing is, most movies
uploaded to Megaupload will look lousy in 4K. Get more
ill-gotten-booty details at Geek.com.

After Blackout, Congress Postpones Action on SOPA, PIPA

Looks like SOPA and PIPA advocates have been scared off
for now. The bills aren't dead, but when they come back,
they won't be called SOPA and PIPA. The massive online
protest this week shows that there may be a set of issues
that the Internet companies could rally around. Although,
I have to say, these laws got very close to passing.
Protesters may have beaten lobbyists this time, but what
happens when SOPA and PIPA return with new, innocuous names?

Apple's Hidden Plan to Own iAuthors

I reported on Apple's bold move into the digital textbook
business earlier, but a closer examination of Apple EULA
reveals some troubling language. Basically, anything you
create with iAuthor must be sold exclusively through the
iTunes store, at which point Apple will take its customary
30 percent cut. The line between a creation tool and
commerce platform are blurring. Imagine Microsoft claiming
the resale rights to any document you write in Word.
Sascha Segan tees off on Apple's new EULA.

10 Excellent, Free Online Education Resources

Of course, you don't have to buy into Apple's system
to access some great online learning tools. We found 10
sites that will make you smarter than the average bear and
three times smarter than some of our presidential hopefuls.
(Now, now, I didn't indicate a party. Besides, what party
did you think I was referring to?) Seriously, these sites
and services represent nothing less than educational
transformation. We could all learn a thing or two from them.
