L2F is similar to the PPTP protocol developed by Microsoft, enabling organizations to set up virtual private networks (VPNs) that use the Internet backbone to move packets. Recently, Microsoft and Cisco agreed to merge their respective protocols into a single, standard protocol called Layer Two Tunneling Protocol(L2TP).
