Burger King’s Planning to Try Out Delivery Services

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 12:52 AM PST

Sometimes getting in your car and going down the street is just too much work, but you still have to eat at some point. That’s why Burger King is planning to try out a delivery service in certain U.S. markets. Presumably, if the plan goes well there, the service will expand to the rest of the U.S. Would you order delivery from BK or would you rather just head over to the drive through?

Would You Visit The Hello Kitty Restaurant?

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 12:35 AM PST

There’s a Hello Kitty hospital and a Hello Kitty jet, so it was only a matter of time before Hello Kitty made her way into a restaurant theme. Hello Kitty seems to be something you either love or hate, so if you ended up in Beijing, would you take the time to dine in the sickly sweet pink dining room?

The Strange Stories Told By Mexican Novela Cover Art

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 11:45 PM PST

Judging by the artwork from Mexican Novelas, pulp novels that Latin America eats up like literary junk food, these stories are as terrifying as they are hilarious. Full of masked wrestlers, shadowy demonic forces, Frankenbirds and Yetis, these stories would make a person suffering from paranoid schizophrenia feel sane in comparison.

The only thing you’re missing out on by not being able to read these stories for yourself is the story behind each panel, so head to the i09 link below and read the clever descriptions Cyriaque Lamar has come up for them all, or make some up for yourself and write your own SuperNovela.

This entertaining and insightful web series by mortician Caitlin Doughty answers the questions we are afraid to ask, or never really wanted to know, in case the answers make us even more afraid of death.

In episode 5 she answers what happens to our bodies in space, if cremating a larger person creates a grease fire, and how often people ask for parts of their loved ones before they’re cremated. It’s a ghastly good time, even if the subject matter makes you feel a bit queasy…

The Wine That Tastes About 4 Billion Years Old

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 09:43 PM PST

Meteorito is the wine with the taste of outer space right in the bottle! That’s because it’s made using a 4.5 billion year old meteorite, that was found in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, to help enhance the flavor with the taste of Uranus. Betcha saw that one coming, didn’t ya?

All kidding aside, this wine is the result of astronomer Ian Hutcheon’s quest to bring his two loves-space and wine, together in a way that can be enjoyed by all. But, if you want to taste this meteoric wine for yourself, you’ll have to make the trip down to his observatory in Chile to get your hands on a bottle.

Beautifully Inaccurate 19th Century Astronomy Illustrations

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 09:29 PM PST

These are the kind of astronomical illustrations that led to what we now know as space porn, beautiful views of space that really get those juices flowing, scientifically speaking of course.

This set of illustrations by French illustrator/astronomer Etienne Leopold Trouvelot is part stargazer’s perspective, part wishful thinking, with a dash of psychedelics thrown in to enhance the vision. They’re beautiful despite their lack of scientific accuracy, and they’re available for viewing via the New York Public Library Digital Gallery.

Mr Pariat, who ignored age-old customs by taking his father's surname is adamant that matriliny is breeding generations of Khasi men who fall short of their inherent potential, citing alcoholism and drug abuse among its negative side-effects.

"If you want to know how much the Khasis favour women just take a trip to the labour ward at the hospital," he says.

"If it's a girl, there will be great cheers from the family outside. If it's a boy, you will hear them mutter politely that, 'Whatever God gives us is quite all right.'"

The Ancient Tale of a Great Hero Who Fixed the Family’s Internet Connection

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 04:49 PM PST

If you’re the one person in a family that knows basic computer maintenance, you’ll pay for it. Oh, you will pay. But generations to follow will remember your heroic deeds. They will name children after you and repeat your legends to awe-struck audiences. Come, now, and hear the tale of one such giant of a man, as told by Mike Lacher:

But then one gray morning did Internet Explorer 6 no longer load The Google. Refresh was clicked, again and again, but still did Internet Explorer 6 not load The Google. Perhaps The Google was broken, the people thought, but then The Yahoo too did not load. Nor did Hotmail. Nor USAToday.com. The land was thrown into panic. Internet Explorer 6 was minimized then maximized. The Compaq Presario was unplugged then plugged back in. The old mouse was brought out and plugged in beside the new mouse. Still, The Google did not load.

Some in the kingdom thought the cause of the darkness must be the Router. Little was known of the Router, legend told it had been installed behind the recliner long ago by a shadowy organization known as Comcast. Others in the kingdom believed it was brought by a distant cousin many feasts ago. Concluding the trouble must lie deep within the microchips, the people of 276 Fernadale Street did despair and resign themselves to defeat.

Man With Double Hearts Got Double Heart Attacks

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 04:16 PM PST

There's something unusual about the X-ray above of a man who went to an Italian hospital's emergency room: he had two hearts, and he got double heart attacks!

It turned out that a few years earlier, the man had undergone a procedure known as a heterotopic heart transplant. Unlike an orthotopic transplant, in which one organ is removed and another put in its place, a heterotopic transplant pairs a new organ with a diseased one. [...]

In the case of the ailing Italian, reported in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, the transplant team had mated his new heart with his malfunctioning old one. Chambers and blood vessels of the two hearts were married so that the new heart could support the old one.

But there’s a risk, explained Vukmir. “You can develop two independent heart rhythms, especially in a scenario where one heart gets a little better,” he said.

What Do The Chinese Think About SOPA?

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 02:15 PM PST

A lot of people have compared the Internet censorship bills SOPA and PIPA with the Great Firewall of China, but how are the recent anti-SOPA protests viewed by those most affected by Internet censorship?

Beijing-based Evan Osnos wrote about how the Chinese people view SOPA:

In China, the reaction to American protests has ranged from sympathy to gentle Schadenfreude, as Chinese Web users try to sort out whether they are being held up as victims or patsies or pirates.

After several years in which American diplomats have inveighed against Internet censorship in China, the proposals have inspired a bit of snickering. “The Great Firewall turns out to be a visionary product; the American government is trying to copy us,” one commentator wrote.

A Chinese message making the rounds on Thursday said: “At last, the planet is becoming unified: We are ahead of the whole world, and the ‘American imperialists’ are racing to catch up.”

Ah, and in case you were wondering, yes, SOPA was animated by the Taiwanese a while ago.

Should Perfumes Be Banned?

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 12:14 PM PST

Ever get a headache from smelling someone's overly-strong perfume? Well, then you'd probably appreciate what New Hampshire state representative Michele Peckham is trying to do. She has introduced a bill to ban state employees from wearing perfumes while on the job:

State representative Michele Peckham is sponsoring House Bill 1444 which hopes to ban state employees who work with the public from wearing perfume. Apparently a constituent with extreme allergies approached Peckham with the proposal. "It may seem silly, but it's a health issue," Peckham told the Union Leader. "Many people have violent reactions to strong scents."

Are Women People?

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 11:07 AM PST

Are Women People? is a book of poetry by Alice Duer Miller, published in 1915. Lili Loofbourow downloaded the book through Project Gutenberg and was delighted to find that it was a book of satirical suffragist poetry, and passed along several of the passages to us. Here is a excerpt from the poem called Women:

I went into a factory
to earn my daily bread:
Men said: “The home is woman’s sphere.”
“I have no home,” I said.

But when the men all marched to war,
they cried to wife and maid,
“Oh, never mind about the home,
but save the export trade.”

For it’s women this and women that, and home’s the place for you,
But it’s patriotic angels when there’s outside work to do,
There’s outside work to do, my dears, there’s outside work to do,
It’s patriotic angels when there’s outside work to do.

Saving Venice with Sea Water

Venice is sinking very slowly -only about two inches every 100 years. But worse, the Adriatic sea is rising around Venice as well. A proposed plan to save the Italian city involves “inflating” its porous foundation with sea water to raise the whole town about a foot. Forty billion gallons of water would need to be pumped! Habits You Develop Growing Up Poor

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 07:53 AM PST

John Cheese at Cracked posted a list called The 5 Stupidest Habits You Develop Growing Up Poor, but also pointed out that they are perfectly rational from the vantage point of someone who does not have the choices that come with financial solvency. They would seem stupid to anyone who hasn’t been there, done that. For example, the food you grew up eating was determined by price and preservatives.

Forget about fresh produce or fresh baked goods or fresh anything. Canned vegetables are as cheap as a gang tattoo, and every poor person I knew (including myself) had them as a staple of their diet. Fruit was the same way. Canned peaches could be split between three kids for half the cost of fresh ones, and at the end you had the extra surprise of pure, liquefied sugar to push you into full-blown hyperglycemia.

If it wasn’t canned, it was frozen. TV dinners, pot pies, chicken nuggets … meals that can be frozen forever, and preparation isn’t more complicated than “Remove from box. Nuke. Eat.” Because of that, by week two, half of everything we bought would be freezer burned. Just like with the canned food, you grow up thinking that this is the way it’s supposed to taste. It’s not that you grow to like it, necessarily, but you do grow to expect it.

This is not the humorous Cracked article you may expect, but the text is still NSFW. Link

A Tuskegee Airman Speaks

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 06:57 AM PST

George Lucas' new movie Red Tails open today, about the exploits of the unit known as the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. Before you see it, read the real story of Tuskegee Airman Dr. Roscoe Brown.

"The most difficult part is something that the movie refers to: overcoming the negative beliefs about blacks that we couldn't do certain things. Our training was relatively fair; however, once we went into combat, initially they didn't want us to be in the high-responsibility positions escorting the bombers. Once they realized they were losing so many bombers, they wanted as many people as possible to escort them; we were given that mission, and we did it extremely well. Then, once people began to hear about us, they said, 'We want those guys, they're really good!' We were probably as good as many of the white pilots, but many of the white pilots would leave the bombers and shoot down planes to become heroes; our commander insisted that we stay with the bombers, which is why the bombers would like seeing our Red Tails flying over them.

Brown also talks about how he came to be a pilot, some close calls, and the indignities the Airmen endured in the military. Link
